Seems odd they're not picking the groups in ranking order, in which case Spieth would have got the soft draw and not Rory.

The ultimate in raffle golf. I want a ticket with Zachary's name on it - short yardage at Austin CC. 4 of his 12 titles have come in Texas. Played well on a course last week that doesn't suit at all. That's enough reasoning, will pluck names out of a hat for a few more.

Think Kisner is an interesting one. Lost in playoffs on two Pete Dye courses last year in Sawgrass and Harbour Town. Very gettable group with Matsy and he clearly better credentialed than the other two. Ended up with Reed, Willett, Zach, Kisner, Horschel, Haas and Olesen with Grace, Louis, and Rose as break evens.

AUSTIN, Texas and another endeavor that is sure to be met with miserable results: Predicting match-play golf.
Especially when it’s three days of round-robin match-play golf at the PGA Tour level. Yet in the world in which we live, we are surrounded by folks with opinions, thoughts, and “expertise.”

Yet it was this sentiment that jumped out at Jim McCabe (Golf Week) Monday night as the internet shoveled out loads of reaction to the WGC-Dell Match Play draw:
Jordan Spieth doesn’t have an easy road to the Sweet 16 this week. No kidding. You mean, as opposed to last year when he had an easy road to the Sweet 16 in this event. Oh, wait. That’s right, he didn’t make it out of his group last year, beaten by Lee Westwood.

Then there was all the gleeful reaction to the Group 1 match that awaits Friday: Spieth vs. Justin Thomas. “Oh, baby,” screamed one tweet, and judging by the reaction on Twitter, you would think that vintage Seve Ballesteros and vintage Tiger Woods were penciled in for Friday at Austin Country Club. Whoa.
Great kids, Spieth and Thomas. Great friends, too. And a good storyline, given their background, but can we at least let them play Wednesday and Thursday? Or at least, throw a little bit of respect to Jamie Donaldson (remember his 2014 Ryder Cup drama?) and Victor Dubuisson (remember his 2014 WGC Match Play heroics?), who round out Group 1? Or even remember that a year ago when we had a pretty solid Friday pairing between soon-to-be-2015-major-winners Jason Day and Zach Johnson.
Only Day was 0-2 and Johnson 1-1, and it was Branden Grace who would win their group.

Point is, folks, it’s golf — match-play golf at that — and if you know a pitching wedge from a pitchfork, you realize that it’s better to sit back and let it happen than to jump ahead and map out a 64-player bracket. That being said, here’s a look at the way this year’s field unfolded during Monday night’s draw.

Group 1: Spieth, Thomas, Dubuisson, Donaldson.
Comment: Players A and B will get all the hype, but the Frenchman still fascinates, and Donaldson remains formidable.
•••
Group 2: Day, Paul Casey, Thongchai Jaidee, Graeme McDowell.
Comment: Combined, these guys are 46-32 in this tournament. A former champ (Day), two-time runner-up (Casey), Volvo Match Play winner (McDowell), and even Jaidee once got to quarterfinals of this event. Yep, the toughest quartet here.
•••
Group 3: Rory McIlroy, Kevin Na, Smylie Kaufman, Thorbjorn Olesen.
Comment: More people know what Thorbjorn translates into (Thunderbear) than what Smylie’s real name is (Carter). Meanwhile, everyone knows McIlroy is a massive favorite to win this group.
•••
Group 4: Bubba Watson, J.B. Holmes, Emiliano Grillo, Patton Kizzire.
Comment: Grillo and Kizzire are intriguing obstacles to the belief that a Watson-Holmes Friday match will decide who goes to the Sweet 16.
•••
Group 5: Rickie Fowler, Byeong-Hun An, Scott Piercy, Jason Dufner.
Comment: Fowler a big favorite, but Piercy can get it heated up in a hurry.
•••
Group 6: Adam Scott, Bill Haas, Chris Wood, Thomas Pieters.
Comment: Scott and Haas are just thrilled not to be at Dove Mountain anymore; they were a combined 3-11 there between 2007-14.
•••
Group 7: Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar, Anirban Lahiri, Fabian Gomez.
Comment: Rose vs. Kuchar is another potential heavyweight battle Friday.
•••
Group 8: Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Robert Streb.
Comment: The most talkative one in the group is the guy who speaks fluent Thai.
•••
Group 9: Patrick Reed, Phil Mickelson, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Daniel Berger.
Comment: Might not pack the punch of Group 2, but so far as flair, fire, cockiness and confidence, there is plenty here.
•••
Group 10: Danny Willett, Brooks Koepka, Billy Horschel, Jaco Van Zyl.
Comment: Willett marched to semi-finals a year ago and has finished third in three different WGCs.
•••
Group 11: Grace, Russell Knox, David Lingmerth, Chris Kirk.
Comment: The talkative and personable Grace, then three guys who quietly and with very little fanfare get the job done. Better group than most people realize.
•••
Group 12: Hideki Matsuyama, Kevin Kisner, Soren Kjeldsen, Rafa Cabrera-Bello.
Comment: Don’t overlook Cabrera-Bello, who has finished inside top 15 in four of his last five starts.
•••
Group 13: Sergio Garcia, Marc Leishman, Ryan Moore, Lee Westwood.
Comment: How long have Wednesday foes Westwood and Garcia been in this racket? Westwood played Eduardo Romero in his first Match Play in ’99, Garcia in his debut in 2000 took on Loren Roberts.
•••
Group 14: Zach Johnson, Shane Lowry, Martin Kaymer, Marcus Fraser.
Comment: Major winners and WGC champs . . . and then there’s Fraser, the unheralded Aussie.
•••
Group 15: Brandt Snedeker, Charl Schwartzel, Danny Lee, Charley Hoffman.
Comment: Hoffman took down both Day and Zach Johnson a year ago and still didn’t make it to the Sweet 16. Tough crowd, indeed.
•••
Group 16: Louis Oosthuizen, Andy Sullivan, Bernd Wiesberger, Matt Jones.
Comment: Robust challenge here, because Oosthuizen looking to make quarterfinals for a third straight year.

This week’s WGC Dell Match Play marks the last chance for players to gain entry into the Masters via the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Since the new year started, that magic threshold has been as impenetrable as an encrypted iPhone.

Seven players loitering outside the top-50 bubble are among the 64 set to compete in round-robin pool play beginning Wednesday at Austin Country Club. The only real chance any of them will have of climbing into the top 50 is at least winning one of the 16 pools to reach the knockout rounds. For most of them, a deep run is essential to gain the world ranking points necessary. Short of that, the only hope for anyone else is winning the Shell Houston Open on the eve of Masters Week.

The lucky seven contenders queued up for last call are South Africa’s Jaco Van Zyl (No. 52), Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello (54), Belgium’s Thomas Pieters (57), Australians Marcus Fraser (62) and Matt Jones (63), American Patton Kizzire (65) and Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen (66).

As the lowest seeds in their respective pools, the odds are stacked against each of them.
Van Zyl has the most realistic chance, simply needing to win his pool against the rugged trio of Danny Willett, Brooks Koepka and Billy Horschel to reach the top 50.
Cabrera-Bello and Pieters need to reach at least the quarterfinals.
The other four will have to make it at least to the semifinals to have a chance of crashing the Masters.
