Tough ask for the judges this year. Day with 5 wins including a major, Spieth with 4 wins but 2 majors. Both have made it to no 1 this year, I would have to say that Day has played the higher standard golf, his recent form is ridiculous, not just winning but blowing the worlds best away, Spieth with just the single big win. I would also have to say that Spieth has made the bigger impact on the game this year however, giving us a grand slam run and incredible consistency across all majors as a 21/22 year old and will win the money list (whatever that is worth). I think a win for either at East Lake would settle it decisively, and you would think the judges are secretly hoping that occurs.
I would slightly favour Day, merely for the fact I think he is the true player of the year as he is the one who has produced the best golf, and finishing at number 1 rather than reaching and losing that mantle has to count an awful lot. 2011 was tough as there were no real world beaters that year, this season we have 2 with major arguments for both.
You can't have two as player of the year it has to be one or the other.
Personally I would go for Spieth regardless of the outcome this week. Player of the Year relates to exactly that the year. Over the course of this season Spieth has been the best player. Day has had a tremendous run of late and is currently the best player but I feel over the year it should go to the man who has shown greater consistency - Spieth.

Day has been consistent all year & now achieving some fantastic results & possibly just shades it over Spieth who has also been exceptional for the most part (2 majors at such a young age is no mean achievement) but the final event might well be the decider

Yes think it all depends on the final events. As it stands, their season stats are much of a muchness. Day has one victory more, but Spieth has the extra major which would swing it his way for me, unless Day was to add further to his tally which is not out of the question. Must be bit knackered by now, though.

In Day's first 11 events he had 1 win and 4 top 5 finishes, he missed 2 cuts and had only 1 other finish in the top 20
His last 8 finishes have been 4 wins T4, T9 & T12 twice
Spieth has played more 23 times
he has had 4 wins 4 2nds 1 3rd and 5 finishes 4 - 10 these have been spread over the course of the year. His last 5 finishes have seen a slight dip T10, 2 MC, MC, T13.
Overall there record is Wins, 2nd, 3rd, 4 - 10 Spieth 4, 4, 1, 5, Day 5, 0, 1, 4,
If we are taking it over the 2014- 2015 season
Spieth has 2 wins and third (granted these weren't official tour wins) from the end of 2014.

not much between them, probably whoever wins this week is player of the year, if neither of them win i favour spieth.

if it could be a tie I think that would be about right, both been exceptional.
If I had to choose 1 I would prob say speith by the width of a **** paper. 2 Majors and missed out on the 3rd by 1 shot (to be in playoff).

Speith - end of story - his record in the majors this year trumps anything Day could do now to gain support.
Day is buzzing right now and looks hard to oppose in any tournament but majors typically determine POY.

Worth remembering Luke Donald and Jim Furyk were recent POY winners without winning any Majors. And Tiger won it two years ago on the back of regular tour victories. But, sure, doubt any player has ever won 2 Majors, contended in the other two, and not been awarded POY.

I am biased, but despite Day's amazing late run I also have to go for Spieth with the one extra major. Nevertheless, what a season. The future looks great for golf.

I would go Speith, 6 weeks ago it wouldn't even be a debate. I know Day has had an amazing few weeks but it's about the whole season, and especially the majors
