Tough ask for the judges this year. Day with 5 wins including a major, Spieth with 4 wins but 2 majors. Both have made it to no 1 this year, I would have to say that Day has played the higher standard golf, his recent form is ridiculous, not just winning but blowing the worlds best away, Spieth with just the single big win. I would also have to say that Spieth has made the bigger impact on the game this year however, giving us a grand slam run and incredible consistency across all majors as a 21/22 year old and will win the money list (whatever that is worth). I think a win for either at East Lake would settle it decisively, and you would think the judges are secretly hoping that occurs.

I would slightly favour Day, merely for the fact I think he is the true player of the year as he is the one who has produced the best golf, and finishing at number 1 rather than reaching and losing that mantle has to count an awful lot. 2011 was tough as there were no real world beaters that year, this season we have 2 with major arguments for both.

Who would you vote for ahead of East Lake?

Spieth easily.
Report Mike-lfc September 21, 2015 1:43 PM BST
people have forgot how good Spieth was. Just because he's been crap for a month or so should be forgotten
Report lewisham ranger September 21, 2015 2:22 PM BST
I think the solution is obvious here. Give them both the player of the year, neither player deserves to miss out.
Report therhino September 21, 2015 2:26 PM BST
Not a bad suggestion Lewisham, never thought of that. Would you still think a tie if either wins this week?
Report lewisham ranger September 21, 2015 3:05 PM BST
Yes I would rhino, definitely. It would be harsh on either if they had to lose out.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 September 21, 2015 3:37 PM BST
You can't have two as player of the year it has to be one or the other.

Personally I would go for Spieth regardless of the outcome this week. Player of the Year relates to exactly that the year. Over the course of this season Spieth has been the best player. Day has had a tremendous run of late and is currently the best player but I feel over the year it should go to the man who has shown greater consistency - Spieth.
Report geordie1956 September 21, 2015 4:39 PM BST
Day has been consistent all year & now achieving some fantastic results & possibly just shades it over Spieth who has also been exceptional for the most part (2 majors at such a young age is no mean achievement) but the final event might well be the decider
Report gentlemanjohn September 21, 2015 4:48 PM BST
Yes think it all depends on the final events. As it stands, their season stats are much of a muchness. Day has one victory more, but Spieth has the extra major which would swing it his way for me, unless Day was to add further to his tally which is not out of the question. Must be bit knackered by now, though.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 September 21, 2015 6:24 PM BST
In Day's first 11 events he had 1 win and 4 top 5 finishes, he missed 2 cuts and had only 1 other finish in the top 20

His last 8 finishes have been 4 wins T4, T9 & T12 twice

Spieth has played more 23 times

he has had 4 wins 4 2nds 1 3rd and 5 finishes 4 - 10 these have been spread over the course of the year. His last 5 finishes have seen a slight dip T10, 2 MC, MC, T13.

Overall there record is
          Wins, 2nd, 3rd, 4 - 10
Spieth       4,   4,   1,   5,
Day          5,   0,   1,   4,

If we are taking it over the 2014- 2015 season

Spieth has 2 wins and third (granted these weren't official tour wins) from the end of 2014.

world ranking points gained 2015

Jordan Spieth    532.31
Jason Day    444.85
Rory McIlroy    310.80
Rickie Fowler    293.47

not much between them, probably whoever wins this week
is player of the year, if neither of them win i favour spieth.

2 majors wins
Report maleuk01. September 22, 2015 12:29 AM BST
if it could be a tie I think that would be about right, both been exceptional.

If I had to choose 1 I would prob say speith by the width of a **** paper. 2 Majors and missed out on the 3rd by 1 shot (to be in playoff).
Report racingguru September 22, 2015 12:32 AM BST
Speith - end of story - his record in the majors this year trumps anything Day could do now to gain support.

Day is buzzing right now and looks hard to oppose in any tournament but majors typically determine POY.
Report gentlemanjohn September 22, 2015 8:39 AM BST
majors typically determine POY

Worth remembering Luke Donald and Jim Furyk were recent POY winners without winning any Majors. And Tiger won it two years ago on the back of regular tour victories. But, sure, doubt any player has ever won 2 Majors, contended in the other two, and not been awarded POY.

Some solid arguments for Spieth here has me going back and forth. Tough call to make for the judges!
Report racingguru September 23, 2015 3:44 AM BST
The year Tiger won it over VJ was about the only tough call (wrong choice IMO) - its usually a very easy decision and this years is easy - Speith.
Report lfc1971 September 23, 2015 10:37 AM BST
It is very easy, Spieth is player of yhe year.
Report miss anomaly September 23, 2015 11:12 AM BST
It's very easy, J-Day is player of the year.
Report MadVlad September 24, 2015 8:32 PM BST
Speith same number of wins but one extra Major, simples.
Report Hank Hill September 24, 2015 9:37 PM BST
I am biased, but despite Day's amazing late run I also have to go for Spieth with the one extra major. Nevertheless, what a season. The future looks great for golf.
Report the bloob September 24, 2015 10:54 PM BST
I would go Speith, 6 weeks ago it wouldn't even be a debate. I know Day has had an amazing few weeks but it's about the whole season, and especially the majors
Report dlarssonf September 25, 2015 3:28 AM BST
Speith no question for me - what he done in the majors at his age was incredible
Report therhino September 27, 2015 10:25 PM BST
No doubt about it now. Well done young man.
Report maleuk01. September 27, 2015 10:31 PM BST
argument settled.

World no 1

2 majors and the fed ex.

What a year for a 22 year old.
