Just wait till the winds blow which they will and see then if its not a true test of golf, currently just lulling them into her embrace

The Home of Golf no fit to host major championships just ask the golfers where they would most like to win a major bet St Andrews is high on the list and the winning score will be nowhere near -30 very deceptive course a true links course

break even fri will be a good score 35 mph winds

Early starters here looks like will be a big advantage

It's a **** s hit course , hate it , saying it for years , hopelessly out of date to host an open and from a spectator point of view is even worse
|
|
By:
Not a fan of the course either. To much of a birdie fest.

Original poster is spot on, been saying as much for years. Not just St Andrews either. You shouldn't have to rely on weather conditions to make any Championship course difficult. We are far too touchy over here. Happy to berate the US Open but nobody will state the obvious about the likes of St Andrews. At least anyone could see the US Open was difficult. Personally, I would rather watch golf where a par actually counts for something. No adverse weather and the winning score would probably be -15 or even better. What's wrong with seeing professional golfers struggle?

its an outdated pitch n putt if theres no wind.todays been the dullest days golf ever. hopefuly tomorrow will bring bad weather to make it a golf tourney.amateurs crusing round in 5 under walofs.

It also takes an age to get round given all the double greens, spectator bottlenecks.

it always amazes me that people spend billions designing golf courses with all sorts of tricks, hazzards etc and the ball spends 90% of the time sailing over it all
|
|

I'm well aware that it's the home of golf, it's an amazing place and I love it. But I don't think it's set up to suit hosting a major championship, that's all and that was the point of this thread.
5-6 hour rounds zzzzzzz, it's no wonder people are taking up cycling over golf in their droves. |

ill admit the course is an embarrasment for spectators, been there a few times, apart from the loop good luck seeing much action

the old course fighting back a bit this afternoon.
The course is what it is, not to sure with the obsession with there having to be a certain score to deem it worthy of a major. Let them all play and whatever is the lowest score wins. |
|
By:
i,d like to see the 2 tee start operated,it would have 2 positives
negate a little of the draw and on a day like today they,d have to come from behind to make a score if playing the back 9 1st, rather than having strokes in the bank, much harder to score when your under pressure to do it |
|
By:
mighty, the course is not fighting back at all, just a case of the early starters getting 3/4 advantage cos of the wind, all but one amateur shot under par, the only over par is still out there.thankfully the wind may make it a golf comp, this morning any old cmnyt #9bar woods )could shoot 67

By:
glad I didn't lay in the 7 v field market , speith dustbin oosty etc took advantage.kuchar casey, stenson mickjleson all under par but as the winds got up they've doubled in price.,

Let them all play and whatever is the lowest score wins. with that attitude why not let them play in the park around the corner and let the lowest score win ffs .... it's nothing to do with a score been deemed worthy of winning a major. It's the fact one of the greatest golf tournie's is played on a course that is nowhere near worthy apart from having the title of the "home of golf"..... St. Andrews just isn't a good course no matter the score high or low |

I'm not mad on the course myself. But am actually more disenchanted with the lottery it always seems to be here.
At all of the other Majors, you can be confident the best player has won. Starting to become too much of a lottery at St. Andrews. |
|
By:
not too many flukey winners on the list ......
2010 Louis Oosthuizen - St Andrews 2005 Tiger Woods - St Andrews 2000 Tiger Woods - St Andrews 1995 John Daly - St Andrews 1990 Nick Faldo - St Andrews 1984 Seve Ballesteros -St Andrews 1978 Jack Nicklaus - St Andrews 1970 Jack Nicklaus - St Andrews 283 1964 Tony Lema - St Andrews 279 1960 Kel Nagle - St Andrews 278 1957 Bobby Locke - St Andrews 279 1955 Peter Thomson - St Andrews 281 1946 Sam Snead - St Andrews 290 |

probably the course i know best from the roster of major courses, so great for betting
par may well be somewhere near 69.5 , but make par 68 get them struggling to beat par, and all of a sudden, without changing the course , the muppets are happy |
|
By:
Donny. Oosthuizen was massively favored by the draw. I know he won by some distance, but some players simply couldn't have won with their draw. Not guaranteed just yet, but may well be the same here.
I understand it's part and parcel of the Open, but it makes me prefer the likes of the Masters tbh. |
|
By:
And who suggested anyone was a 'flukey' winner anyway? You are missing my point entirely tbh.
|
|
By:
the masters is a limited field, is a great format, on a great course, but the 4 majors set out to test all
aspects of a players game augusta and st andrews form is well tied together strange you could like one and knock t'other |
|
By:
I'm knocking the fact your chances are hugely influenced by why what time you tee off, regardless of how well you play. And whilst that is often the case in any Open, St Andrews appears to be the worst offender.
And I say this as a huge fan of the Open. In fact today was the first day I've not been there for nearly 20 years. I've been to every open venue, and strictly just looking at the courses, St Andrews just isn't one of my favourites. It's better than the likes of Hoylake, which is easily the worst in my opinion, but a world away from the likes of Turnberry, Muirfield, Carnoustie. I think the form ties in so well because they are the two most prestigious events in golf, and the cream rises to the top. |
