Sheppy - You do know that it is possible to make money out of golfers without them winning?

Tiger attracts money and that is a winning formula!

Yes of course I do, but I think I get what you're talking aboutHappy

I was kinda joking about Tiger. I really don't want to appear to be ignorant, but to me his odds are always too short due to his brilliant history.

Good luck everybody...Happy

2 pars in his front 9.

4 bogeys

1 double

All this on one of his favourite courses.

I've always been convinced that he could come back and win but I'm really doubting it now.

3 Birdies on the back so +1 no disastrous but again we'll be talking whether he makes the cut rather than is he gonna compete.

Pretty happy with my gamble on Matsuyama for the US open after his 64 today. I have been backing him nearly every week since the Masters at 50/1 for it. He excels on tough courses and is some player. If he could sort out his putting stroke from inside 10 feet then he would be better than Spieth and Rory for me. No better player than him tee to green though.

...and then in true Dufner style misses a 4 footer for par on the next.  Guy's deadlier from 200 yards than he is from 4 feet.

Memorial from Muirfield Village GC in Dublin, Ohio.

KICK OFF those Lucchese boots (or 'Heritage' Boots) with spurs – the full kit is not required this week so leave the Stetson behind - and most importantly the belt with holsters and twin Smith & Wesson’s - as we forget the Alamo and Waco, and leave all those Honky Tonks in Texas behind us for another year.
.....as we fly north - from ‘Hogan’s Alley’ up to ‘Jack’s Place’ in Dublin - Ohio that is - northwest of Columbus!

THE 40th edition of this prestigious Invitational - The Memorial Tournament takes place at Muirfield Village Country Club.

http://www.nicklaus.com/

The dream and work of ‘The Golden Bear’, Jack grew up just down the road from here so built his masterpiece in his own backyard. Since the course opened in 1974, it has hosted the 1987 Ryder Cup, the 1992 US Amateur Championship, the 1998 Solheim Cup and the 2013 Presidents Cup.

HIS trademark in design is that most tee shots play downhill into generous landing areas where erratic tee shots that find problems will be punished. Muirfield therefore sets up as a classic second-shot course (think Seminole, Ballybunion & Ryl Melbourne composite as per Tiger) also with thick rough and extensive bunkering that will test the best scramblers just as Jack intended. In 2014 there were only eight, bogey-free rounds. In 2013 there was one round as it ranked the 2nd-hardest par 72 next to Augusta. Birdies can be plentiful so I can see Jordan post a score of 272 (16 under) in this elite 120 man field.

LAST YEAR the World’s #1 player, Adam Scott headed the field of 120 players fresh off a playoff victory for his ‘Texas Slam’ - this year #2 Jordan Spieth (7/1 on the nose) is the 'MASTER' and is joined by FIVE other players from the Top 10 in the OWGR where experience and class usually play a large part this week...

#5 Jim Furyk – 28’s ew and 2002 Champ and runner up in 1997 and 2009 - played 17 editions with one MC in 2011 – he met his wife here too.
#6 Justin Rose – 18/1 ew and the 2010 Memorial Winner and 2013 U.S. Open Champ has five top 10s here at Muirfield Village as he tees it up here for the 11th time. After a quite May, slick bent grass greens aren’t going to bother this guy who made plenty of putts on the same grass at Augusta and a Zurich win in Louisiana also helped his April.
#7 Rickie Fowler - THE PLAYERS Champ and 2010 runner-up to Rose - like anyone who went four rounds in RCD, it’s easy to envisage their swings getting out of kilter having had to manufacture so many shots on the iconic links. Let’s just try and forget the 2-8-8 finish to Rd.3 in Co. Down?
#8 Dustin Johnson is now six top 10s in 11 events since February, the start of his season. Again, let’s just forget two bad swings last week on hole six where DJ hit one, a-mile-right OB, followed by his re-load, half-a-mile left into the sh8te and took three to hack out. A what IF or wtf !
#10 Jason Day – is still feeling ‘dizzy’ but while he has the comforts of home as he lives here in Columbus he has never finished better than T27 in six tries.

Hideki Matsuyama is the defending Champion (beat Kevin Na on the first playoff hole, while Woods is the only player to defend) along with Matt Kuchar the 2013 winner and first timer Molinari (if only he could putt) are also on the 'watch' list. Hideki was the only player (outside the inaugural edition) to raise the trophy in his first time playing here.

Winning Scores
2014: Hideki Matsuyama 275
2013: Matt Kuchar 276
2012: Tiger Woods 279
2011: Steve Stricker 272
2010: Justin Rose 270
2009: Tiger Woods 276
2008: Kenny Perry 280
2007: K.J. Choi 271
2006: Carl Pettersson 276
2005: Bart Bryant 272
2004: Ernie Els 270
2003: Kenny Perry 275
2002: Jim Furyk 274
2001: Tiger Woods 271
2000: Tiger Woods 269
The WORST player on this list has one TOUR win and that is Matsuyama...Bryant had three and Pettersson currently has five.

Roger Maltbie, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour and a key member of NBC Sports’ golf coverage team since 1992, won the first edition of this invitational in 1976 beating Hale Irwin in a four-hole playoff.  Maltbie is one of only two players (host Jack Nicklaus is the other) to have played in every Memorial since its inception in 1976. As the network’s lead course reporter, Maltbie usually draws the assignment of walking with the leaders. Can’t wait for his interview with Jordan on Sunday evening !

'Turn on, tune in, drop out'...more to follow...must watch Alex win the Nordea... in yankee with Jordan, Novak & Serena.

FYI

"Augusta's overarching philosophy is to give you a lot of room off the tee, and then to place a premium on the second shot. Most of my life I've played that way, what I call second shot golf. The tee shot was almost a formality for me. I'd step up to the tee, knock the ball out there, and then really focus on the second shot to the green. Fortunately that's been the way Augusta has been laid out for most of my career."
.....Jack Nicklaus, Nicklaus by Design, pg. 12.

"We wanted what you'd call a "second-shot golf course," similar to Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie's philosophy at Augusta National. That is, when you play the course from the members' tees, you've got plenty of room to drive the ball and you have relatively easy access to the greens. Then, all you do when you want to host a world-class field is hid the pins, cut the greens, and take the tees back, and you end up with a first-rate championship golf course, one that puts the emphasis not on the tee shot, but on the second shot and/or the approach shot (in the case of par-5s).
.....Jack Nicklaus, Nicklaus by Design, pg. 145.

"The second shot is the most demanding on the majority of my courses. It not only reveals the player, but in many ways reveals the designer as well. The second shot is where you really get to know how a designer integrates his fairways and greens."
.....Jack Nicklaus, Nicklaus by Design, pg. 185.

Andy Sullivan posted a bogey-free, 8-under-par 32-32=64 in yesterday's 2nd round, just two shots off the 36-hole clubhouse lead. Andy is in the field on a special exemption reserved for internationals positioned near the top in earnings on a circuit elsewhere - Sullivan is third on the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit thanks to winning the Joburg Open three months ago - the Englishman proved why he deserved it. At last check, he was leading the field in strokes gained: tee-to-green with an aggregate clip of 7.472. This is just his second PGA TOUR start. He went 1-2 at the Match Play a month ago in San Fran beaten by Reed 2/1 in Rd1, he won 3/2 over Ryan Moore before going down to the finalist Danny Willett by only one hole.
