With quotes of  22/1 the field this looks a tough tourny to get involved in , J Walters missed cut on both previous starts @ santo de Serra course heads the market , irish man Kevin phelan who struggles for distance shud be suited by this narrow short track it may be a big field but a huge amount of out of form players who are struggling just to make cuts it can be narrowed down for me to 4 players ; K phelan, J lagergren ,c pigem , and a long shot C Paisley (22/15/14) finishes last 3 seasons in this event

sounds like a great place but not a lot of luck playing golf there

strong winds delay start - fog decimated tournament last year

hopefully we get more than 36 holes this time
Report donny osmond • March 19, 2015 10:33 AM GMT
its a windy place

lots of rain forecast this week too, with wind dropping

Welcome to the picturesque Portuguese Island of Madeira for their 2015 M.I. Open.

The 1991 R.T.Jones Jnr redesigned ‘Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra’ is the host for the 16th time - a short par 72 cliff-top hilly course with wide fairways featuring small & difficult sloping greens.
http://www.santodaserragolf.com/

Recent winners here are...
2014 Daniel Brooks at -9 (reduced to 36 holes - due to numerous lengthy delays caused by fog & after Iain McGregor (Alastair Forsyth's caddie) died from a heart attack on the ninth hole !).
2013 Peter Uihlein at -15.
2012 Ricardo Santos at -22.

The Euro TOUR’s 23rd visit will be a blustery, wet and windy tournament and it was expected the 72 holes will be completed this year. NOW 54 if there's lucky.

BETS...

Will Kevin Phelan 28’s follow Irish winners Des Smyth 2001 & Michael Hoey 2011 ?
Kevin was third in October’s Hong Kong Open, T2 with 67,68,71,66 at the Joburg Open and led the recent Africa Open in a very windy R1 posting a super 67 but then the wheels fell off for a T60 as conditions eased.
This Top Ranked Irishman will have one of his best chances of winning on Tour with weather to suit this week.

Italian Renato Paratore 33’s started 2015 with weekend rounds in all three Gulf Swing events and finishing T13 in Dubai.
The teenager makes his debut here after the exuberance of youth yielded T46 - MC - MC in South Africa.

What the hell is USA's Sihwan Kim doing here this week ?
The Florida-based Korean is 'attached' to Arnie’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. He’s on the wrong side of the Atlantic Ocean !
He’s following in the footsteps of Tiger Woods, David Duval and Hunter Mahan by winning the US Junior Amateur Championship in 2004.
Kim (50’s in Lads) shot 68, 66, 70, 71 for T11 here in 2012 and is buddies with 2013 champ Peter Uihlein.
Queue the congrats phone call from Arnie next Sunday evening.

Ricardo Gouveia (50’s PP) plays out of Vilamourma G.C but is a promising young Portuguese player who already showed his talent by winning last year on just his seventh start on the Challenge Tour and is the #1 ranked player in category 18 (Winners of European Challenge Tour Ranking Tournaments).

S.S.P. Chawrasia 40’s was 10th in Malaysia in February before he cost me (and him) by failing to win the Indian Open, shooting a final-round 76 and finishing second. Still like him though only not as much.
Makes his debut here having failed to make the weekend in the Joburg Open on his latest outing.
Highest Race to Dubai (RTD) ranked player at #31 in this week’s weak field.

Richard Finch 50’s category 10 player and 191 on the RTD.

Carlos Del Moral 80’s is a 29yo Spaniard with a T20 in South Africa, T31 in India and T4 here in 2012.
Moral was the 54-hole leader after posting 69, 67 & a third-round 63 followed by a 73 Sunday.
Santos won with 68, 67, 68 & another amazing 63.

Antonio Hortal 125’s is a young Spanish Challenge Tour player, who finished third in this 36 holes event last year.

Johan Edfors 66’s is a top ranked category 16 player just ranked behind Moral & Hortal.

'Orish' cross (Atlantic) double, the week that's in it.

‘Hah, fat fookin chance of that happening' ! I hear you say.

As I said before, these write-ups may look good on paper before the bell.

36 hole shootout for a 2 year exemption, and 44 players within 5 shots of the leader. Big chance for someone this.

Every year there are problems with wind or rain etc, there have been many shortended tournaments here - needs to move later in the year if that would help - no wonder there is never no coverage, looks a lovely place apart from the weather, I suppose thats what you get if you live in the middle of the ocean.
Report stonecold- • March 25, 2015 11:04 PM GMT
sure i read bering moved to july from next year
