With just 19 days to go...

Brendon Todd and Kevin Na earned spots in the Open Championship last Sunday based on their standing in the FedEx Cup.
Todd is 10th in the standings, while Na is 11th.

Open Championship exemptions were awarded to the top five players in the FedEx Cup standings after the Travelers Championship who were not yet exempt to Royal Liverpool, provided they were in the top 20 of the FedEx Cup standings.
Todd and Na were the only two players in the FedEx Cup's top 20 who were not yet exempt into the Open Championship.

Competitors at the Quicken Loans National, The Greenbrier Classic and John Deere Classic will be competing for more than just a trophy and FedEx Cup points.
They’ll be vying for nine available spots in The Open.

At the Quicken Loans National and The Greenbrier, the top four players not already exempt for The Open who finish among the top 12 and ties will gain entry.

The top finisher at the John Deere Classic who is not yet exempt for The Open will earn a spot, as long as he also finishes in the top five at the Deere.

Players have ALREADY QUALIFIED from completed events around the world.

Emirates Australian Open three places to the leading three players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top 10 and ties Rhein Gibson, Bryden Macpherson & John Senden.

The Joburg Open three places to the leading three players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top 10 and ties George Coetzee, Jin Jeong & Justin Walters.

The Open Qualifying Series-Thailand our places to the leading four players Hiroshi Iwata, Cheng-Tsung Pan, Yoshinobu Tsukada & Ashun Wu.

The Mizuno Open four places to the leading four players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top 12 and ties Dong-Kyu Jang, Hyung-Tae Kim, Tomohiro Kondo & Juvic Pagunsan.

The Irish Open three places to the leading three players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top 10 and ties Matthew Baldwin, Edoardo Molinari & Danny Willett.

IN EUROPE the next two weeks also offer further exemptions.

Alstom Open de France with three places to the leading three players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top 10 and ties

Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open three places to the leading three players (not otherwise exempt) who finish in the top 10 and ties

yeah ,worth it,just for the type of bets available

Thanks.  It was sold out in the local Tesco (the b******* killed of the local paper shop) so I got it at the nearest service station (only two left).
I see Steve Palmer picks Hideki Matsuyama at 66/1.  I backed Marsuyama at about 410 last year for a big green but although he finished 6th in horse racing terms "never nearer" so he was difficult to lay.
I found the 2011 RP Open preview a few days ago and only Chubby Chandler, Darren Clarke's manager, gave him a mention.

Fwiw I use this for local weather forecasts. http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/west_kirby_basin

well i'd backed over 25 people for this, but then greened up for pennies, so book now is blank.
so many can theoretically win this, it's crazy, but even tho i am ITCHING to make some bets its the wrong play!! we all know the wind is king on links, so how can u bet b4 the day??? imo u cant, i will be up very early tomorrow and placing bets then.

But i honestly beleive if the weather for thursday right (very calm) the are gunna rip this course apart!!!, i'm talking 8 under + even 10s not out of the question, friday there saying wind may get up, i hope so.

also think especially the thursday, the longer hitters are gunna be top, all 4 par 5s reachable in two, those who have good eagle stats will do well.

Actually i lie, i have backed one player who i beleive is the CRAZIEST PRICE EVER enter BOO WEEKLEY , His game is 100% set up for a PURE testing links course. accuracy/gir/ball striking, he loves it. i have literally got enuff money to retire if boo could do it lol...just happens that boo's recent form is highlighted by a 5th at the hp byron in may, reffered to as a links style course!!!

good luck all.

Must say though, the fact you know if a guy has made a putt or not by the odds contracting or lengthening does kill it a bit for me, i have tried to get in the habit of turning the machine off mid round Sunday but it stays off for about the first 3 holes then i fall into the hole of watching numbers move on a screen instead of watching the flippin sport Sad
Report Colldogg July 16, 2014 5:05 PM BST
I've got one spot left up for grabs in my team. Rickie Fowler or Harris English. I wasn't going to back Fowler but 40/1 for 8 places is very tempting as he should be top 20 at least this week. Having said that, Harris English I think very highly of and think he is a future world number 1 in the making and has the all round game. Yes he is in a bit of a slump of form at the minute but if it all clicks then he has certainly proven he knows how to win and with his power and accuracy he could take advantage of the Par 5's. He's the kind of guy who is going to win at a stupidly big price soon and everyone is going to be kicking themselves saying 'Why did I not back him at that price?'

Hmmmmm.......
Report bannahan July 16, 2014 5:13 PM BST
The rumours of "every caddie wants to be on Harris's bag" swayed me, especially at the prices.

By rumours i mean i probably read it somwhere and was half cut at the time Crazy
Report Colldogg July 16, 2014 5:24 PM BST
Excited I've heard that rumour and all so you couldn't have been that cut. Stuff it, I will go with Harris at the prices. He showed glimpses on his opening round at the John Deere last week that he was getting back to his best. Hopefully a change of scenery will be enough for an upturn in fortune and he did show up well for a long way at the Travelers.

Rickie is probs 1.01 to place now I'm not going to back him but while I have a lot of time for Rickie as a decent human being and consistent player. I just think he's missing that X factor on the course and killer instinct to go with his style and clothing and actually win.

My point is that Noh should be in at the start since he won a tournament. I do believe any winner should have automatic qualification. It's unfair that winners from the last few tournaments get a place and not those from 2 to 6 months ago.

I  tried to watch the Masters with the machine off, but being on Blixt and speith i had to have it on especially when JS went 2 clear.....fooked it for me after that and wish i had just watched the box and died a slow death rather than knowing my fate before the gun was loaded Sad

The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool

There are few finer sights in golf than the best players in the world battling it out on the great links courses of Britain & Ireland and this year is no different as we return to the classic Hoylake course at Royal Liverpool where the game’s elite are aiming to lift the greatest prize in the sport: The Claret Jug.  With conditions set fair for the week following a dry and sunny build-up the course is playing firm and fast, ideal for links golf. 2011 Champion Darren Clarke has described it as  “pure links” so we are set for a dramatic and exciting week. The challenge of links golf is one of the oldest yet most difficult to master: the imagination and creativity to play shots from unique positions, the ability to hit the ball low under the wind and control it and a tremendous short game are three key ingredients when looking for a potential winner.

2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell has everything you could want in a potential Open Champion and looks primed for a massive week. He is in fantastic form having just successfully defended his Open de France title at the tough Golf National course in Paris and ranks 1st in putting on the Official PGA Tour Stats. Add that to his brilliant driving and iron skills and you can see why he was 5th in the 2012 edition and maybe should have won. The Northern Ireland man is no stranger to the unique demands of links golf, being born and bred in Portrush and he will surely fancy his chances of adding a second Major to his collection. Take the 33/1 with Ladbrokes.

American Rickie Fowler has long been touted as golf’s next big thing and these past few months have seen him string some very impressive performances together on some of the world’s toughest courses. Under long-time coach Barry McConnell Fowler developed an appreciation and love of links golf which shows through in his brief yet already impressive Open Championship record: 14/5/31 in his first 3 appearances from 2010-2012. His performances in this season’s first two Major’s were outstanding: 5th in The Masters and 2nd at The US Open. He warmed up nicely for this week’s challenge with a fine 8th place at The Scottish Open, closing with an eyecatching 65 on Sunday and he will be full of confidence in his search for a first Major Trophy. Bet365 & Paddy Power are both paying 7 places each way so the 40/1 should be taken.

The European challenge looks particularly strong this year and I have 3 great value selections to complete the staking plan. Many will no doubt fancy Justin Rose to add to last year’s maiden Major triumph at the US Open and with victories in his last two tournaments his confidence will be sky high. He looks sure to go close but at 14/1 the value has long gone. Instead, at almost 5 times the price, why not have an interest in Welshman Jamie Donaldson. This has truly been a breakthrough season for Donaldson, so long a nearly man on the European Tour. Having finally broken his European Tour duck on the legendary links of Royal Portrush by winning the Irish Open he followed that up last year with victory in Abu Dhabi. That second victory has propelled him to a new level and a series of outstanding performances have followed this season, most notably 14th at The Masters and 2nd at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The 66/1 on offer looks like tremendous value, especially with Betfair Sportsbook’s generous offer of 8 places each way. The flying Finn Mikko Ilonen has long looked the type to make a big impact at an Open Championship and this looks like his best chance yet. After several years ravaged by injury he has roared back with a vengeance, winning last month’s Irish Open to follow on from 2013′s Nordea Masters triumph. The icing on the cake is his outstanding record here at Hoylake: Amateur Champion in 2000 and 16th in the 2006 Open Championship itself. Most of the fancy prices have dispappeared but the 80/1, again with Betfair Sportsbook, still looks like excellent each way value. We complete our selections with the Great Dane Thomas Bjorn, who in the twilight of his career is playing some of his best ever golf. A  master of the links, he has compiled an enviable record in The Open Championship with finishes of 4th, 8th, 9th and  twice a runner-up, including his infamous and heartbreaking capitulation to Ben Curtis in 2003. He has won five titles in the past four years and went close in The Masters in April, leading briefly on Saturday before finishing an excellent 8th. He looks sure to have a good week so I have no hesitation in recommending the 55/1 with Betfair Sportsbook.

Happy punting

Cuyahoga Grin

G McDowell 33/1
R Fowler 40/1
T Bjorn 55/1
J Donaldson 66/1
M Ilonen 80/1

Almost time! The best week of the year is almost upon us!

My team is ready and feeling confident of a good week:

Mikko Ilonen
£5,914.16
Ilonen has been pretty impressive since his win this year and if you look at his numbers for the Scottish Open he would have been in the the thick of it had it not been for an 8 on his card on Friday. Sort of player who often hits the front early and is very tough to dislodge.
Jamie Donaldson
£5,978.28
Donaldson is almost a heavyweight player nowadays. He has done everything wrong over the last few weeks and yet has still came close to winning twice. As with Ilonen a good first round may be the key with him although he can win despite his frustrating slow starting of late.
Jonas Blixt
£6,303.72
This lad is made for links golf, great short game and accurate long iron play makes me keep taking the 200/1 on offer.
Thorbjorn Olesen
£6,961.89
Strange year for Oleson! No real indicators for supporting him this week but he is made for tough courses and just on the off chance he has found something over the last few weeks I have taken some of the 380/1 for him.
Jason Day
£5,041.65
All year I have been talking about him as a likely winner of this years Open, I like the way he only plays selected events and focuses on the majors. He has everything required to win this week and if he is fully fit I cant see him being far away.
Rory McIlroy
£4,845.34
Rory needs a rocket up the behind! I was over the moon he shot that 78 in the Scottish last Friday as he might now get rid of what seems to me to be a bit of arrogance creeping into his game and just focus for all four rounds, if he does he could win by 15 shots!

im back from my self imposed hiatus with thicker skin than ever! i banned myself from posting on all forums of all descriptions for a few months without any real heads up to forumites. i've been instead, observing the dynamics and idiosyncrasies of each forum. the key on here is to post something and make it sound like you are not too sure of yourself. but not too unsure. if you observe social dynamics, like a workplace for example, a group will usually not like the one who sounds sure of himself, because this reinforces their own insecurity and their subsequent control dramas play out.

for instance, i have been reading and reading and in all this time imo, the best thread to get no real traction was seaside's fourth round banker tips that got rubbished because he was too sure of himself. it was going so well. aberdonia asked for a tip, molinari came in and then the thread is over because seaside didn't get the encouragement and thanks he should have got. this really made me upset and reinforced to myself why i had to have a hiatus. but in hindsight that should have been the moment i came back....

ps - seaside screwed himself with not thinking about 1st post/title - ridiculous, but talked a lot of sense in the thread.

thongchai jaidee top 20 @ 6 sounds good.

not a fan of jin jeong who is hard to get right, but i think 110 for top asian seems more than fair. i think however, thongchai will ultimately take every asian to the cleaner. yes - even hideki. this guy is totally unrespected in betting usually imo.

i dont know why but i think those who played down under at royal melb at the world cup of golf will do well here. just a feeling with nothing really to back it up. i just feel that that tourney boosted every player's overall golf knowledge. you know on playstation how your boost your player's ratings by doing certain things? same thing. cue streelman, lahiri and co. streelman has already won since, which i missed out on and was seething. he is an appreciater of classic golf courses and should relish this week.

and if you want to back rory, i feel one should not back him outright. you are better off backing him first round leader. pays out in only one day at usually a one or two tick higher price than his outright price and he has led more first rounds than he has won tourneys lately as we all know. this policy surely has been vetted by now?

seems to me he leads first round more times than 1 in 20 starts last couple years. someone dig out a stat to verify this?
Report vegasdreams July 17, 2014 12:08 AM BST
oh without doubt re rory, 1st rnds the bet, can't knock yer bets either, love jaidee will scrap a score outa nowhere and, so u know lahiri has won since aswell, alongside 3 top tens, I mentioned him on here, bleedin 1000!!, win or not, price is wrong.

hey vegas, yeah, like i said, seaside was too sure of himself which makes people react the way i described before. but that's the human condition isn't it? we want someone to not be so sure of themselves, but yet, we would feel more confident in their tip if they themselves are sure of it. crazy catch 22 isn't it?

i mean regardless of how he chose to articulate his first post, we should have given him a chance to be vetted. he could have been the real deal, or he could have been millionaire morse (for those who know morse). how often have we hard on here from forumites that they prob shouldn't do anything until the fourth round anyway? quite often. and that's the jist of what he was saying.

he was 1 from 1 which was a good start (i made money off molinari and am very grateful. it was a scary ride but he made it), and then he was still being chewed out after he got it right because he was upset noone took his advice after he was asked to provide his tip.
Report vegasdreams July 17, 2014 12:29 AM BST
if only it was simply he was over confident - he never came across at all confident in his 1st post, he sounded , I hasten to say it but a bit "slow" and slightly deranged, the whole thing was just a comedy sketch.
you can't recover from that!!, the saddest part is in a way your right his comments inside the thread showed he was in no way stupid prob just lay n p!ssed lol, but were intelligent albeit very basic even to a newbie, the 1 out of one thing...well banker? your scary ride may tell its own story.

main outright bets.

ponce
furyk
thongchai
rose (i have a saying that i swear by. what happens once may never happen twice. but what happens a second time will surely happen a third)
streelman
gmac

thongchai and furyk are over 40 years of age so that means they are prob going to win Crazy

top senior: if the majestic one is off his game, mark wiebe can be the man (his stars align in july and is an epic price without having to beat very much should the Legend fall over doing a stretch (i got $2 on wiebe outright as well @ 2001). he has won three times in julys including last years senior edition of this tourney. but now i'm just sounding like ben fecking coley and david john from sportinglife. but they think alot like me so its makes sense.

top gb and ireland: d clarke. its a new man. its a new day. its 80/1!!

i havent posted on here in about 4 years. never one for short odds but cover bets on stenson, GMAC, Garcia and Scott. Surprised no one has shouted Casey. 55-1 ew 8 places wit Bfair looks very generous and 75's on the exchange to trade... also Karlsson @ 110 on exchange (likes Scotland, coming into form at the right time) and of course Ilonen has a brilliant record round here and is in form 100's looks long. Also Donaldson and Gallagher @100's. Cant resist 500-1 on David Howell for a trade. probably the death knell for all of them. Oh yeah and El Pato - loves majors and won Greenbriar - I think was top 20 here in 2006 - will take 80's. Good luck everyone. F@ck I love the Open. It's The Open, we've all already won.
