Always tricky when the top guys are all playing somewhere else, there's some dodgy characters in this line-up for sure Laugh

Taken from my blog. Good luck everyone HappyHappy

The Tour’s up and coming stars have a chance to shine this week in Puerto Rico and it looks wide open at first glance. It has been a long and painful road to recovery for Alvaro Quiros who has suffered from injuries and loss of form over the past couple of seasons. At his best he could take this field apart so with confidence surely high after a recent 5th place finish in The Joburg Open, and a decent 28th place result on his only visit to Puerto Rico, it is hard to resist having a bit of the 40/1 widely available.

Similar sentiments apply to giant Swede Robert Karlsson and at 45/1 with Bet365 I am prepared to get involved. Although out of the winners circle since 2010 he has been steadily improving and a recent 8th place finish in Abu Dhabi was a good indicator of his return to form. This comes on the back of two fine Top 10 finishes on his sole PGA Tour starts this season back in November. Having finished 30th on his course debut last year he will fancy his chances of lifting another trophy.

Three-time European Tour winner Marcel Siem has been in consistent form for over a year now and this drop in class could just see him get his head in front where it matters. 66/1 will do nicely. US veteran Jerry Kelly boasts some outstanding form in Puerto Rico with results of 2nd, 9th and 25th in his past five visits. There is no way he should be 66/1 in a field like this.

Puerto Rico Open

A Quiros 40/1 (Betvictor)
R Karlsson 45/1 (B365)
M Siem 66/1 (Betvictor)
J Kelly 66/1 (B365)

Despite a small sample size it would seem course form is paramount here with the past 4 winners all recording top 15 finishes in the previous years event. Also what is noticeable is players with Floridian ties have performed exceptionally well being responsible for 4 out of the 5 victors. Hopefully that is a trend that continues this week and Jupiter resident Morgan Hoffmann can record his first PGA TOUR victory. Morgan tied for 14th last year despite a lackluster 71 on Sunday and going into the tournament with form of T69-MC-MC-MC, he's coming in with much better form this time with two top 20's in his last 4 events. There's no shame in missing the cut by 1 shot at the tough PGA National so I can forgive last weeks minor blip and in this company I believe he's a decent price at 40/1.

Added James Driscoll to repeat what he did here in 2011 after shooting a 63 and lead after the first round. It's looking like the morning starters are going to have a big advantage with the wind expected to pick up severely around midday. Driscoll has been a fast starter this season with 7/9 of his first rounds being in the 60's.

Last years result at the Puerto Rico Open rather rained on my parade re the close links with Florida - B = Born, C = College L = Lives
2008 Kraft C L
2009 & 2011 Bradley B L
2010 Lamely C L
2012 McNeill B C L
I maintain that it is still a key fact as the course is so similar to typical Floridian resort courses and that's what led me to my two big priced outsiders
Hudson Swafford was born and lives in Florida and whilst he went to college in Georgia that in itself could be a blessing - as he could follow in the footsteps of Watson, Kirk, English and Henley - all Bulldogs who have won this year. He was 8th in the Sony earlier in the year and played well for three rounds last week 0.2 ew 125/1
In Ted Potter we have a player who has already won on the main tour - that win came after a poor run of form - five straight missed cuts before a slightly improved start and then he won. This year he missed the first five cuts but last week saw him play really well for the first three rounds. The born and bred Floridian should see conditions in his favour this week 0.2 ew 150/1
I can see Fabian Gomez continue his good run of form in this event where he has been 7th and 2nd in two appearances - his only two top tens on the PGA tour. He won just before Christmas in Argentina and his two m/c at Pebble and Torrey were actually better than past years. 0.25 ew 80/1
Chesson Hadley impressed me last year on the tour with a brace of wins and five other top five finishes. He finished 5th in Nevada on the Summerlin course (where McNeill has been 1st and 2nd), was 10th at Pebble Beach and last week after an opening 73 he shot six under par to finish 24th - apparently he was a bit unwell during the opening round 0.3 ew 50/1
This time last year Michael Thompson had just won the Honda Classic and went on to finish 8th at Doral. I wanted to wait for the tee times to be announced before backing him because in 2011 when he was 14th here on his only start and he actually got to his finishing score of -9 after just 24 holes - treading water thereafter. He was brilliant on the front nine that week and he goes off early off the first tee tomorrow. His title defence last week ended in a missed cut but he tweeted he had six lip outs in round one which wouldn't have helped! 0.4 ew 50/1

I liken my selections to the young greyhounds that have been dropped in grade against their older counterparts.

Brooks Koepka 28's
William McGuirt 28's

I'll be very dissapointed if at least one of them doesnt go close.
Report three_for_it March 6, 2014 10:45 AM GMT
Just the one in this for me,William McGirt e/w @40s.

Didn't exactly impress under the gun when in contention at Riviera a few weeks back but I think he's edging closer to a breakthrough. Was sitting in a nice position on another tough course at the Honda last week and then imploded with a third round 78 but I'll forgive him that. Was also top 15 in his only visit here in 2012 and I reckon he's type that might thrive even more with the big names of the tour otherwise engaged this week.

Slight discrepancy in 2 ball/outight prices today.

Carl Petersson is paired with Jerry Kelly.
2 ball betting: CP 2.36/2.42
                JK 2.02/2.1

Outright: CP 12/12.5
          JK 15.5/16

Little sense to be made out of that!!

I would say the 2 ball betting is closer to what it should be than the outright. But as a JK backer, i am probably slightly biased.

Just for the record...
1st MARTIN TRAINER -15 F -5 70,67,69,67 - 273

T2 Baddeley, Aaron -12 F E 70,68,66,72 - 276
T2 Berger, Daniel -12 F -6 70,71,69,66 - 276
T2 Sloan, Roger -12 F -5 70,67,72,67 - 276
T2 Wagner, Johnson -12 F -3 69,69,69,69 - 276 (Mr consistent)

T6 Schwartzel, Charl -11 F -6 71,68,72,66 - 277
T6 Stefani, Shawn -11 F -7 70,71,71,65 - 277
T8 Crane, Ben -10 F -2 68,69,71,70 - 278
T8 Lashley, Nate -10 F +1 68,68,69,73 - 278

TRAINER making his tournament debut, PGA TOUR Rookie and World #286 bags his first PGA TOUR title in only his 11th career event as he posted a 5-under-par, up two places on the day and good for a three-shot victory over runners-up Daniel Berger (66), Roger Sloan (67), Johnson Wagner (69) and overnight leader Aaron Baddeley (72).
The 27yo is the third rookie to win this season - a two-year exemption and no reshuffle - joining Cameron Champ and Adam Long. Martin, a French-born American and Southern Cal student, was a candidate for Player of the Year last season. For the week, he tallied 23 birdies, No. 1 in that stat, versus eight bogeys.

Total Bosman • February 21, 2019 4:15 PM GMT.....I rant about this every year, but this field is far weaker than it really should be, barely up to Web standards.  So many guys desperate for a tour win with its many benefits yet so few show up to what could be the best chance odds-wise they have all year.  Where are (say)Luke List or Beau Hossler or Sam Burns or JJ Spaun or Keith Mitchell, good players who would love to break their tour duck, but who think this is beneath them when it would actually be a huge chance to take a step forward in their careers.
.....Trainer's story is pretty incredible.  Had no status on the Web last year, Monday qualified for a Web tournament (after a play-off), won it to get Web status, went on a run of MCs then won again to guarantee promotion to the PGA tour, missed most of his cuts now pops up and wins again, now exempt for 2 years.  Fair play to him.
.....Huge result for Trainer, had a poor start to his tour career and now secured a card for 2 two years and can relax.
