Shocked

Surely not, isn't there a push for it to be back on the Open rota? Strange choice in my opinion.
Report donny osmond November 15, 2013 11:48 AM GMT
Former US Open champion and Portrush native Graeme McDowell admitted the possibility of staging one of golf's four major championships was "very bizarre," adding: "It's always been a dream of mine to play the Open there but the US PGA would do nicely".

"It's very bizarre and an amazing statement. I couldn't believe it and read it three times. I had heard the US PGA was looking at going global, which is a very positive step forward, but I was expecting Asia, not the north coast of Ireland.

"Even if it never comes to fruition it's a great boost to be mentioned in that breath. My brother Gary is on the greenkeeping staff there and he will have a spring in his step.

"Having three majors in America with the way the game is growing is a little too weighted. It's the fourth major of four so taking it somewhere else would really boost the interest. Asia, Australia or Europe would really embrace it."

Royal Portrush has emerged as a surprise contender to stage the US PGA Championship if the PGA of America goes ahead with plans to stage the event outside the United States.

The PGA of America confirmed last month that a committee is studying the impact of holding the event around the world, with the earliest possible date in 2020.

It had been thought that Asia would be the most likely venue, but PGA of America president Ted Bishop told Golf Channel's 'Morning Drive' programme on Thursday that he was interested in Portrush.

"Royal Portrush would be a great first international major," he said. "I think given the powerful effect that Irish golfers have on the professional game today, that might be a good place to start."

The R&A denied reports this summer that the Open Championship was set to be held at Portrush in either 2018 or 2019. R&A chief executive Peter Dawson admitted earlier this year that Portrush is "a fantastic golf course," but concerns remain over the infrastructure required to stage a major and Dawson feels the current nine-course Open rota is "about right".

The Northern Irish course has not hosted a major since the 1951 Open, but the Irish Open was a huge success there in 2012.

Fair play to the Yanks , being more positive in some respects than the R & A , who have been reluctant to allow the Open anywhere but where they regard as the "mainland " ( including Wales) .  Infrastructure comments are just a smokescreen to hide behind , anyone tell me all the current courses have the necessary qualifications ?

Portrush would meet any requirements given the will , and the members would all support the move with a bit of a nudge .

Surprised at this mornings news , interesting to see what happens in the longer term .

Mock not , saw the  USPGA guy myself in interview today .

I'm with Kelly on this.
The R&A should allow THE Open to be played all across our glorious British Isles.
As for the US PGA being played outside the US.......well, I find that a tad peculiar.
Report sewter lives again November 16, 2013 10:11 AM GMT
Always thought it wasn't quite right that 3 of the 4 majors were in the US.
Would love to see the USPGA move around but remain very sceptical that it will happen.

As for the Open they really should look at Wales/NI and somewhere like Royal Porthcawl and Portrush.
Report aberdonia November 16, 2013 11:30 AM GMT
Is it the "PGA" or the "USPGA".

a bit strange for a tournament with "US" in the title to be played elsewhere.

Cant see this happening.

The so called "open" should certainly be played at Portrush.

The British Isles Open will also be a more apt title for the "Open" in the coming years.
Report akaBirdman November 17, 2013 1:31 AM GMT
eh? It's The Open Championship

has it's own global brand so I cannot see the name changing anytime soon
Report xmoneyx November 17, 2013 11:29 AM GMT
change name to world uspga

would be very strange if it happened

US Club Pro qualifiers may need a helping hand with expenses...would there also be a qualifier for local club pros for whichever country held it?
Report brain dead jockeys November 18, 2013 12:07 AM GMT
if its played abroad, one guarantee about the USPGA is it will be played in a suitable time zone for AMERICAN tv............IT WONT BE ON IN THE MIDDLE OF TEH MORNING.
i would love to see it played in british isles............it should not be played in mainland europe..........they have no interest in golf. end of. should not be played in china either.

Call me biased, but after walking Royal Melbourne yesterday it has to be the venue for the PGA outside of America. Unbelievable layout, best I've ever seen by a mile. Not the prettiest, but course itself is out of this world. McKenzie was a genius.
Report Kelly November 24, 2013 1:49 AM GMT
Along with Portrush , therhino , both belong to the Colt / McKenzie stable . The courses they designed all stand the test of time .  There is a very good book out there about all 300 plus courses they designed .  Dont think there is a "bad " course anywhere in it .

It will be interesting if we hear Gmac's comments , he learnt to play in Portrush  , and  his brother is a greenkeeper there  , possibly on Valley course ( not as spectacular as the Dunluce course , but excellent test  , runs alongside and in and around the Dunluce links ) .

Thats one of the beautiful things about going to see golf on a good course , even if the golf aint good , its still enjoyable .  Cant say that about many soccer grounds !

I have no doubt Portrush is special Kelly. It should have a major, but we know which major it should have. For the PGA to be truly innovative it has no need to go the Isles, we don't need 2 Opens in a year. That's why I think Royal Melb is a no brainer. When the Pres Cup was here 2 years back I remember a Fred Couples interview, he said half the team labelled it the best course they have ever played. High praise from a group that have played some special courses.

These old gems are unreal, would be a travesty if they used something artificial in Dubai or Asia for such an occasion.

Agree with you , therhino , Melbourne would be an excellent venue , assuming time zones etc would suit .

Lost of locals here ( me included) prefer Royal County Down to Portrush incidentally ( marginally) , but Portrush has accomodated 120,000 easily at Irish Open last year over the 4 days , Newcastle couldn't do that I suspect . Tom Watson says the first nine at Newcastle are the best consecutive nine holes anywhere in the world .

Love the traditional links courses myself , proper place to play golf ( in decent weather) .

This World Cup golf might be interesting in a few more holes , we are getting it live , competing with the cricket .  Cheers .

nothing to stop both melbourne and portrush getting a turn

americans might be happier to start off their experiment at portrush
Report Kelly November 24, 2013 1:30 PM GMT
Portrush in August would allow play to 8 o'clock if pushed  , TV timings etc being relevant to USA viewers . Thats core TV coverage in USA central time from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m , and 2 days being Saturday and Sunday .

Not sure about East coast Aussie relevancy timewise for USA audiences , donny . Course excellent , but timings ?

One I would look at in England is Birkdale , impressed with it recently for the British Seniors ( and a friend played in that albeit down the field  , so comments are at first hand ) .
