I have something called "the rule of last week" I bring in to play from time to time.
A player turns up at a venue that they have a great track record on. are in good recent/current form and expect from themselves a massive week. They duly put the pressure on themselves & don't perform. The following week they don't have such high expectations, relax more & bingo...step forward Boooo this week. Also have gone with KJ, Camillo, Walker, Overton & finally sticking with Horschel on a track, which he picked out earlier this year on his website as one of the ones he was looking forward to most this year. |

Having lost over £700 in The Masters, I decided it was time to try out a little strategy I've been toying with for quite a while now.
I put the theory into practice last week, and it worked. Furyk and Snedeker never even entered my calculations. And so, dear friends, armed with a new found confidence, I give you my opening gambit for this week only, free of charge. J.Rose K.Bradley R.Fowler T.Olesen B.de Jonge J.Senden C.Hoffman C.Villegas J.Rollins J.Spieth C.Stroud R.Sabbatini J.Wagner J.Blixt J.Kelly G.Woodland S.Appleby D.Summerhays W.Claxton S.LeBrun J.Parnevik and my dear old friend C.Knost. Liability -£250. ![]() |

only two for me...
billy horschel who looks a winner in waiting and jason dufner who absolutely loves it here |

Seems an extremely weak field - no strength in depth whatsoever, with the likes of Olesen, de Jonge and Horshel sitting in the top 10 of the market
Some fair prices on the likes of Rose and Dufner considering Dufner's course form swings it for me I vowed not to touch Horshel with a bargepole after a dismal Sunday a few weeks back, he seems to have put a lot of pressure on himself after a (IICR) joint second a week or two previous - it seems like expectations have been raised and he's beating himself up over it. A poor Sunday again last week |

jack Kray, think you're being a bit harsh on Horschel. He was a class act on amateur circuit and he is now just making his way. Unless you're Tiger, Phil etc every player has a learning curve before getting over the winning line, Dufner & Fowler being two obvious ones that spring to mind.
This is basically his second full injury free year on tour & there are plenty of players who have been out on tour a lot longer than him & playing good golf who are yet to get over the line such as Walker, Overton & Tringale & I'd be surprised if Horschel doesn't win over the next year. Last Sunday he entered the day in 6th & ended 9th with a double at the last [ on the hardest hole on the course] when he was out of a chance to win anyway costing him a top 5 so it was hardly a collapse. He is playing as consistently as anyone on tour at the moment and whilst I agree his price is a bit stingy this week it represents his E/W value based on current consistency. His time will come if not this week, fairly soon. |

Dufner an obvious selection due to his prior form here, but can't be having him at under 20s based off his form this year. I'd want at least 30s. Scoring stats are not good and yet to register a top 10 this year, based off that 19s is way too low imo.

The first thing I do when faced with an event with plenty of course form is to write down the names of the winners and see if any link jumps out at me. This week with the Zurich Classic I did just that and something was niggling me but I couldn't put my finger on it - then I read a course review - open, windswept with lots of bunkers including pot bunkers and the penny dropped - as a Pete Dye course it sounded very similar to his Whistling Straits design. Sure enough 2010 PGA Championship and there we have three past winners - Watson 2nd, Dufner 5th and we all remember Watney who took a three shot lead into the final round. It was at least a starting point to the week and made me have a very close look at the man who was tied 8th Camilo Villegas. The South American actually lost his tour card for this year as he fell out of love with the game a bit with some poor form in the last eighteen months. He is usually a good ball striker and a poor putter but even his ball striking went south but he is determined to get everything back together with a new work ethos. Over his last two starts this has started to pay dividends and largely down to a hot putter - his 16th at Bay Hill and tied 9th last week can be ascribed to being top ten in the putting stats for each week and that has been unheard of since he was in his prime at the end of 2008. He has made both cuts here and last years 18th was pretty good as he was in dire form at the time. He has had a few false dawns over the past few years but this week we could well see the old Villegas. Buoyed by International players getting the upper hand on the PGA tour and in a weak field he is a strong bet 0.75 ew 80/1 (66/1 fine)
I am sticking with the International player theme - KJ Choi came close to being a pick and a saver at 50/1 wouldn't go amiss but I rather fancy the chances of fiery South African Rory Sabbatini. He has slowly been finding his form as he often does at this time of year with recent figures of mc/30/27/9 and was 2nd for GIR last week at Harbour Town. He certainly knows how to play the TPC Louisiana course as he was 2nd on his debut here in 2009. As a six time winner on tour he often goes off a big price and growing up in Durban and living in Texas means he can certainly handle the wind 0.25 ew 80/1 |

I agree with Horschel in that he enetered the books after that runner-up to Stallings last asesaon. However, I felt he was expecting far too much of himself when leading a couple of weeks ago and his attitude, whilst determined. was not conducive to realaxed play. So much so that he looked like exploding every time he made the slightest error. He continues to show this spirit/worrying trait (delete as appropriate) and it is noit good to watch. A bit Levin like really.

Covers on Rose who I do think is good value in this poor field and Keegan. Then a stack of orders being filled.

I get what you're saying about his temperament DML, but Spencer has never had a patch of form compared to Billy right now. He keeps knocking on the door, very similar to Dufner this time last year and he finally fell over the line in this event. It's a poor field we all agree, the market leaders aren't prolific winners and this event has had it's share of 1st time winners. The price is value. Much better than Olesen at similar odds, Dufner, Watney etc. who are out of form. I'm on again, partially matched at 40s and have begrudgingly taken 36s, expect it to keep shrinking.

DONEMYLOT - I think now Horschel has done well and people are noticing him and praising him, he's got a raised level of expectancy that he didn't have before, and his fiery nature/ego seems to make him try too hard to live up to his 'new status' if you can call it that
He's way too hard on himself, we all know golf is frustrating at times, but he seems to let it get to him, muttering to himself in the third person "Billy this, Billy that", slamming his putter into the bag etc Ha has the talent to contend for sure, but for me, I want to see him do it on the back nine on a Sunday now he is no longer under the radar - not neccesarily win - but contend in a calm manner when he has a chance of winning |
|
By:
Love watching Billy the headcase, great viewing, hope the lad does win sonner rather than later, but would rather watch him than bet him at this stage.
I like the look of Rose in this event, but short enough for a man with his win ratio record, might be an event to bet in running and take the reduced odds as a result. |

I really like TMM's pick of Villegas, I'd never have thought of him otherwise but am on at 80/1.
Also backed Palmer at 60/1 6 places, which looks big for someone who knows how to win and was 4th last year Nicholas Thompson 150/1 6 places, whose record here is 7-24-4 and is in reasonable shape this year Jerry Kelly 110/1 6 places. As a past winner I was expecting a shorter price following his decent showing last week |
|
By:
Couldn't back Duffers with counterfeit at the price he is the way he has putted this season. Threw a few each way darts at the 6 places firms on Sabba, Overton and Els as an opening gambit, will prob add a win bet on Bubba too.
gl all. |

Well a few bets taken apart from the Rose, Bradley covers.
Fisher and Karlsson are two very very good players that must return to something like their true form soon. Karlsson showed glimpses last time out and Fishers stats are very very good, 17th in total driving with the exception of his putting. These two must be itching to get back to the limelight and worlds top 50 where they belong. Others I have taken are Noh, Glover, Marino, Gooseneck, Blix, English, Tomassulo, Reavie, KJ, Immelman, Lynn and Toms |
|
By:
Nick Watney
Jordan Spieth Harris English Matt Every Brian Harman Ricky Barnes Slow getting matched....perhaps the odds i want are a bit too high.....mmmm |
|
By:
Traded Tringale, English, Sabba, McNeil and De Jonge thus far. Backed Horschel, Davis and Villegas and attempting to lay off now. Avoiding market leaders this week, don't fancy prices on any of them if I had to pick one it would be Bubba. Will stick to roughies though this week and see how it plays out for a couple of days then move as needed.

Just added Vaughn Taylor at 490s, only played five times this year for 3 made cuts, all 3 were top 25s though and the two MCs weren't horrible score wise. Worth a nibble.
|
|
By:
I've taken some Erik Compton @ 470s.
He missed the cut last week, but I'll forgive him that. His game appears to be in good shape, and the price looks generous. Slight concern about his sand saves, as there are plenty of bunkers round here, but worth a punt at the price. Also taken Martin Flores @ 432, and another left field pick who I hope will feature, Brad Fritsch @ 463 Laid off my stake on Matt Jones @ 110, but still a nice green, and still have him E/W with the books. |
|
By:
Also done a £1 acca 3 ball 1st round.
Villegas (Trahan, Marino) Watney (Dufner, Blubber Bubba) Freddie (Points, Leonard) K.J. (Toms, Piercy) Rory Sabb (Wagner, Appleby) Rickie (Els, Thompson Steele (Kirk, Brown) Palmer (Olesen, Hearn) Incredibly unlikely, but @ 1600/1, worth a quid. |
|
By:
Wow... Flores price collapsed. Stake out. Nice.
Also laid half of Compton @ 400. Looking to reinvest. |
|
By:
Taken Matt Every @ 400
|
|
By:
Just Olesen for me this week.
Still recovering from last week having Jacquelin from the start in the Euro event and trading him out for small profit when he started looking shakey, groan (after timing I realise). |

gone for
graham delaat 90/1 ew camilo villegas 65 ryan palmer 80 rory sabatini 75/1 also backed ken duke 100/1 first round leader ew and sabatini 80/1 graham delat 80/1 goodluck all |
|
By:
I've done Bubba at 19/1 and Overton at 54/1. Both proven around here, Overton had a good finish last week while I'm hoping Bubba will bounce back to form - perhaps it's now a weight of his shoulders that he ain't the reigning Masters Champ anymore.

Going for a big bet on Karlsson don't ask me why, just have a sneaky feeling.
