Was having a few pints watching the golf last night with a couple of mates and this came up. I am a competent single figure player. Playing it for the first time, no caddy, back tees, I reckon I would score around 130. If I played it 4-5 times I think I may be able to break 100, on a good day.

My mate who is also a single figure player reckons he could break 100 comfortably. Any thoughts ?

I play off of 13 and I'd be over the moon with 120!

Regular 4 putts I reckon
Report mexicano April 14, 2013 7:19 AM BST
back in the day they used to have a usa press v british press match on the monday[ i don't know if they still do ] and the journos went into a ballot to see who got to play.

i know a guy who played in it a few times,[he was off 4 at the time].

he told me he never broke 100.

I am quite sure that I could not complete the course. My caddy would need to carry two bags. One with clubs the other with balls.
Report sewter lives again April 14, 2013 7:43 AM BST
i play off 12 and imo there is no way i could break 100 even on a good day

would probably be delighted with 120
Report NorwichRob April 14, 2013 8:24 AM BST
Course set-up requires professional ball striking capability to hold the greens, a scratch player would have a chance of breaking 90 but other than that it would be crazy golf for your average hacker..NR for 99%..Laugh

I think you all overrate the course difficulties here.
Not much trouble around here apart from the very difficult green areas.
I would be very surpriesed if a 5 handicapper didn't break 100 easily.
He would be on or close to most greens in regulation and could have 3 putts or a chip and 2 putts on every green and still break 100 with ease.
Report Eddie the eagle April 14, 2013 8:52 AM BST
And just to add, there are big differences on how 5 handicappers play. You have the short straight exstremely consistant players and you have the longer more erratic hitters.
The latter would performe better here.

Having walked the course a few times, the one thing nobody considers is fatique - it is a very tiring course physically and would be mentally.

The TV does not do the course justice, the 19th for instance is about a 60 foot elevation from tee to green. They have really tightened the course up, its not just about bombing it, you have to be really accurate from the tee on a number of holes notably, 7, 9, 11, 17 and 28 - the greens are absolutely ridiculous, not so much the speed, the sheer size and contours.

I know of a few very low digit handicappers who have played there and shot in the 80's from the members tees and NR'd from the Masters tee's.

I myself play of 5, if I broke 100, I would be made up.

Having walked round also ,,the sheer elevation changes are incredible ,remember a member telling us that even if a single figure golfer dropped his ball 10 yards short of every green and played from there the pro would still out score him from the tee :)

Good god I would hate to think what I would score. I play off 14 and I am not a huge hitter and average 230-260 off the tee.

So quite a few of the Par 4's become unreachable in 2 for me so that's a big issue.

Then we get to the greens which are like hitting to and putting on a table!!! My putting stats are not great which is why I play off 14 and not single fingers so I think a lot of 3 putts and maybe even 4 putts would take place.

84 to play off 14 but I would be happy breaking 110 if I am honest.

Would love to play the course though :-)

How it was yesterday I would guess low 90's (3 handicap), but then I would be playing it not to score crazy high rather than playing to score, e.g. pitching to the parts of the green I could 2 putt from rather than trying to get it closer to pin.

That's actually pretty long for someone with your handicap
Most hobby golfers overestimate their distance from the tee with at least 10 %
Report Nige down south April 14, 2013 10:39 AM BST
I was referring to my distance in relation to pro's. My distance is good for 14 handicap (my coach says I should average 225yds to play to 10 handicap)

My FIR and GIR are equiv to single figure handicap but my Up&Down % and total putts are not good at all - hence why I am off 13.5

I played off 2 for nearly 20 years until 8 years ago before a car crash made me give up the game full time.

I played Muirfield in the wind and with the greens at Competition pace and played absolutely fantastic in both morning and afternoon and shot 90-96 = 186.

My best game at my peak and I reckon I would score around about 100!

Reckon one of the caddies would save us all alot of shots

I'm off 9 and wouldn't have a chance of beating 100, but with a caddy telling me where to go, I reckon I would have a squeak

Brilliant thread and confirms that golf is truly an elite sport.

Elite to such an extent that highly gifted amateurs could not compete on a course like this.

In some sports a very gifted amateur could bridge the gap up to a point. I'm thinking football, rugby and cricket.

Had a similar discussion a few years back , playing of 20ish ( as I do )
If I only had a putter , and dropped the ball on the edge of the green what would I shoot around the 18 holes of Augusta at Masters conditions , would I shoot low enough to win a green jacket , I think it would be tight ???

try to play your amateur team against say barcelona ,believe me the gap would be wide. you can compete on course like this... with fellow amateurs :) not with pro golfers , same like in most sports. in golf you mainly play against course not opponents so its bit different overall

in tennis  gifted amateur would possibly score no game against top 50 player, possibly would struggle with handful of single points

I play off 18 and am a short hitter. I'd say I could steer it round the 18 holes in 130-150. At least I'd be getting value for the green fee.

You would either break 100 or be around it David -  I reckon I would score 88-99 kinda score -  I play off 6 over hereand have played Atlanta Athletic club and teh place they play the tour championship...  Scored 89 and 92 (with an 8 at 9 to go out in 43......)

The course has no rough so its just the putting that will kill you... (same idea as the tour champ course)
Report mexicano April 14, 2013 3:42 PM BST
that's why golf is such a great sport, we get to gauge our performance against the very greatest, as the opponent is the course and we don't have another player making it difficult for us.

to be fair, most times us amatuers get to play at the top courses they are set up in a benign state, and we tend to play off forward tees, but the difficulty we have in hitting a reasonable score in easy conditions gives us an idea of the difficulty we would encounter if it had been set up for a tournament.

i've played at kiowah island off the backs and it was a real struggle, even though the course was set up for general play. and i've played at most of the top courses in europe, and if you play well off the forwad tees they normally put you off you can record a half decent score.

the hardest course i ever encountered was las brisas when we played on the monday after the spanish open had finished [was about 25 years ago] we played of the same tees, the flags were in the same positions, the greens were obviously a bit slower than the day before [but still electric] and we all found it nigh on impossible.
Report mexicano April 14, 2013 3:45 PM BST
the thing is we can go to any of the tournament venues, and at some places we can even play off the same tees.

but we very rarely get to play these top courses when they're set up for tournament play.

they are a differnt animal entirely.

I presume for 51 weeks of the year the grass on the greens is allowed to grow a bit??!

I still can't understand how the Chinese lad has performed so well yet it's believed top female golfers can't compete with the men.
Report mexicano April 14, 2013 5:01 PM BST
yep the greens are always a lot slower when we get to play them, also the pins tend to be in user friendly positions, and the fairways are a lot wider.
