Does anyone have any factual info or theories as to why the South African players thrive here? A guy at work asked me today and i couldn't give an honest answer. Climate perhaps? Thanks in advance.
Probably because they have the best mentality. They are very strong minded under pressure. And there's no greater pressure than the back 9 at Augusta on a Sunday.
I posted here ages ago about the South Africans in majors - there's no fannying around when the going gets tough ( eg Monty, Adam Scott and a few others ).
I had my biggest ever win when Charl won at Augusta. Birdies the last 4 to win and still gets very little credit for it. Imagine if someone like Rory or Tiger did that.

Agree with Eboe...mental strenghth is a given. Also did well with Charl & his final 4 holes were extroidinary.
Angel's win in 09 - on the 18th par 4 playoff for 3 - taps in a 20ft putt & cleans up on the next hole to win.
Mental stenghth, must be long, putt well & luck = the winner. The top SA players have the first 3 covered.
