OT - Golf equipment

Been playing golf for a year now and just wondered how often people changed their golf clubs? I want to upgrade but not sure whether to buy used golf clubs or buy new? 

I have been looking at Golfbidder to buy some used irons, but not that impressed...dont want to buy off eBay due to risks of counterfeit etc, but am I too paranoid?!
