Last of the big 3 Aussie tournaments and our final chance at paying for xmas. Surely nothing of note on next weekend? Would think the winner will come from the usual list of local notables and Sabbatini must be a sure thing for top 10, seems every Aussie event has a well known international in the mix who usually comes up short, and since it is just he this week then it must be him

Reports are that since Clive Palmer took over the property from the Hyatt the place has gone to absolute sh1t so it will be interesting to see what condition the course is in and whether it's been properly maintained for a championship.

Already been a controversy I see, PGA officials unhappy that Palmer has littered the course with branding for his Titanic 2 ocean liner, he has even painted areas of fairways with the corporate logo in areas. At what tournament do you see painted bloody fairways... Douchebag. Would not be surprised one bit if this is the swansong for Coolum which would be a shame as it's a great course and point of difference from the other courses used here.

i have researched the federal reserve and its origins and have discovered that the bankers who opposed the fed were lured onto the titanic for a cruise in order to 'talk things over' with JP morgan, rockerfeller, rothschild et al who were down with the fed.
jp morgan amazingly didn't get on board. which made no sense coz they were there to talk with him so why didn't he get on board? coz he knew what was coming, and they ran it into the iceberg on purpose and deliberately had not enough life boats. to top it off, children and women first made it easier to sink the rich banking MEN. then we get a hollywood movie glorifying the movie so we have a romantisised notion of the event. but in reality, the sinking of the titanic symbolised our world going downhill via financial tyranny from the fed. for if you control a country's money supply, you care not for what laws that country may have. anyway, class over. go back to paying ridiculous interest rates  |

Interesting conspiracy theory pokeron , you are in the same boat ( so to speak ) as my daughter who buys into the Olympic sized conspiracy theory re Titanic . Only question would be why would American bankers not wait for the return journey ( presuming the ship was going to dominate the Atlantic route for years and years ) before dipping their toes in the water ?

Not wanting to divert the thread heading , but the Titanic references related to course owner sparked off a train of thought here .
The strange thing about the Titanic is that for some reason the people of Belfast and districts never talked about the event , certainly when I was growing up in the forties and fifties . My grandfather worked on the Titanic , my uncle remembered being on his fathers shoulders at the launch in 1911 ( before it was fitted out ) . My grandfather served his time in Workman Clarks before working in Harland and Wolff ( after travel to USA looking for work , and being recorded in Ellis Island documents , third class travel , my grandmother travelled over later second class , not processed in Ellis Island ) . Workman Clarks were bigger than Harland and Wolff in 1911 and 1912 believe it or not , but folded in mid thirties and their "yard" was subsumed by Harlands . My grandfather was chased out of the yard on at least 2 occasions , despite an English / protestant surname and christian name , but guess the spies spent Sunday mornings occasionally on the Falls Road where he went to Mass . He never talked about it though , too many painful memories and pressure in Belfast in those days . The recent Titanic "industry" is a good example of turning misfortune into profit . The Titanic experience that is doing well these days in Belfast is very well put together and worth a visit if being in Ireland ( and the golf courses are brilliant , but only really from may to September , weather ! Maybe the Palmer guy is buying into that publicity , but painting fairways ! ? |

Robert Trent Jones can rest assured his work still looks ok. The new holes on the front 9 are out of character with holes(4,5,6,7,8) that were removed,but they fit the landscape in that parcel of land. The resort itself has stood still and is evidence that no funds have been allocated to upgrading. Birdies usually happen front 9, after a birdie blitz on 12 the course starts to bite back. Noticed the last few years the Europeans started to get sweaty under the gills with the high humidity.Can get warm with little or no breeze. Also watch how many putts come up short on day 4 in the arvo, the stuff grows before your eyes. |

You can also throw in a 7th on the OneAsia Tour at the China Masters. For a guy in red hot form it would not suprise to see him finish high on the leaderboard again. |

Quite possible Palmer bought the place with the sole intention of running it into the ground to offset taxes paid from his other business interests. We should maybe transfer this thread to the chit chat forum since it's all dodgy tycoons and conspiracy theories so far but I'm sure we'll get to the golf at some point...

Pokeron , my daughter lives on facebook , which I dont even know how to access . She is quite a Titanicophile if there is such a word . Giggled her way out of playing golf when I tried to teach her as a kid , thought it was a silly game . Represented Ireland though once upon a time in a team sport very dissimilar from golf as it was water based . Cheers .

Answering my own query courtesy of Mighty Whites on another thread . O'Hern was trying to qualify on the tour school in USA presumably at that time . Guess he will be playing all the events this side of the Atlantic next year .

The Australian PGA Championship is the weakest of the three "Majors" down under and there have to be question marks about most of the leading protagonists - if I had to pick one it would be O'Hern but having had a big e/w bet on him last year which saw him finish inevitably 6th I will pass. Going down the field nothing really caught my eye apart from James Nitties who has a good record at Coolum. He led going into the final round here on his debut in 2004 before finishing 2nd and also has an 8th place to his name. In six starts he has been 3rd, 1st and 6th after round one so with an early tee time I have split the bet 0.15 ew 80/1 + 0.15 ew Rd 1 leader 66/1.

@the muppet.... Nick O'Hern was extremely unlucky to card his triple bogey last week as the horn blew for suspension of play. He will feel golf owes him some fairplay and I think he will put in a really big effort. If he does well and you are not on him, you may feel you let him get away. Even a small interest. I , myself am waiting for a match to a bet and will put it up as soon as it has found a taker. The very best of Xmas luck to all forumites.
