I know this is slightly off topic currently but with February hitting us i cant help thinking about battle plans ahead for Augusta. Had some really strong results in this event over the years with Olazabal, Johnson, Cabrera and Schwartzel along with some of my team flattering to decieve, DiMarco, Snedeker, Campbell.
Like to get quite a few in the book for this one as with such a short field i feel your odds of interest come sunday evening are quite generous compared to the other majors.
Anyway had my first dabble today, YE Yang at the standout 150,s with Korals, backed this guy a couple of times when finishing just outside the places (8th - 20th) the last two years and as a definate runner feel he is too big. Just needs to eat the par 5,s up a little better to challenge.

Will be adding:

Westwood (16,s) - Gonna win a major this year surely
Ogilvy (66,s) - Top 26 for the last 3 years
Scwartzel (40,s) - He owes me nothing and we have had plenty of dual winners here
D.Johnson (40,s) - Three top 40,s last 3 years with added experience of 'major' pressures.

Anyway thats me, whats your thoughts team betfair ?

Rickie Fowler isnt someone I normally get involved with but he looks a massive price. Got some matched at 140s and a bit more at a 120s.

He was a debutant at Augusta last year and was going along nicely at halfway having shot -2 and -3 in his first two rounds. Faded into an eventual T38 with a 74 and 76 but can clearly go low there. Form is reasonable this year without smashing the place up; missed just one cut and a best place T7 at the Honda Classic a couple of weeks back.

Ranked 6th in Total Driving and 22nd in Scrambling, I reckon he is one that could well be involved at the business end, although its probably asking a lot for him to win.

Tiger - Yesterday was a master class in ball control and how to close out the competition on a Sunday, a joy to watch after some of the Sunday meltdowns seen recently by the likes of Charlie Wi, Ernie Els and Bubba Watson, last night was a lesson in how it's done fellas. Gmac was throwing all sorts his way and he didnt even flinch.

Very Impressive indeed, such a solid and controlled round in those tough windy/firm conditions

I would also just like to give a big shout out to all the generous tiger layers at 10.5 for the masters only last week! Happy

The way Tiger is controlling the ball on a string, hitting long, and now rolling the putts better he's a massive favourite for the Masters, hes competed on Sunday at Augusta with half a game over the last few years, should be a mouth watering prospect in his current form...... roll on next Thursday Happy

A player I like at a big price. Kevin Na. Has a poor record at Augusta, but I can see him putting that right this year. He is having a great season to date. I've been nibbling at him for quite a while, and he is now a substantial green.

I've finally got all of my Geoff Ogilvy order filled, 150-160 is HUGE for a player of his class - multiple WGC winner and Major winner. I saw enough at the Transitions to add him to my side.

Just noticed how well Trevor Immleman played at the weekend - flew under the radar somewhat. Without doubt his form at Augusta rivals anyone for consistancy with a host of finishes in the top 25. Has to be worthy of consideration at around 150/1

Taken Ogilvy and Immelman, Ogilvy only ups his game for the majors now, 2nd or 3rd last year when he came i with exactly the same form, still a contender. Been piling into Immelman @ 200-250 his wrist injury would have scared a few but should see him strengthen now as a very good record at augusta and showing some form
Report ericthecat March 26, 2012 1:56 PM BST

Thought that Woods return to form has occurred at the right time. Has been playing much better for the last month now and a win on the tour can only improve hi confidence. Even when playing badly he has always competed well at Augusta and his stats (GIR 1st and driving accuracy) at the Arnold Palmer are massive attributes on a course where you don't want to end up in the rough. His price has shorted up but seems about right to me.

Only in-play betting for me. Will be backing the final two on sunday and will be looking to lay guys who have traditionally shown a lack of will power in majors if they get too short. Justin Rose would be an in-play lay going into round three if he was out the front after two for instance.

Moore is a yes for me, good player and can has proved he can play a bit round here. Anything over 200s is a fair price.

Barnes has been god awful apart from one run out this season, he's way too short for me (shorter than Moore!)

Chomping at the bit for next Thursday, think all golf fans realise we could be in for a classic 4 days with many of the top dogs in sparkling form.

Never thought I would be backing Thomas Bjorn or Paul Lawrie for anything but I think they could really shock people next week. Two guys most famous for throwing away an Open Championship/ winning one under v fortuitous circumstances. However since (arguably) their most famous days in the sun they have claimed 10 Titles between them. They both have very respectable past from round Augusta and are currently striking the ball as well if not better than they ever have. At 150/1 and 500/1 respectively I am happy to throw on a few quid ew.

Bo Van Pelt is starting to look like a fantastic bet at 150s currently on Betfair. Joint most Top 10s this year and in very good form. He ranks highly in most relevant stats (Par 5 scoring, most putting)and also played very well last year to finish T8. Game is bubbling up nicely for augusta. Would've challenged in bay hill but for one bad hole, the 6th (he's in the book for next year!). Also has a decent masters record. From some brief research i see he has one MC but all other finishes were in top 30 incl one top 10. Overall, he could provide some decent trading opportunities. Have covered him offf in Redstone as well in case he peaks this week.

Tigger....the quiet, unasuming, family man,out to take a step closer to Mr Nicklaus's Major tally.
Wee Rory.....the young lad from Holywood,Northern Ireland,who doesn't hold grudges.....except against Augusta.
Big Phil.......arrogant,focused,determined to put in yet more bogey free rounds. If only he would acknowledge the spectators more.
Lee John......the jovial joker,care free,Major free,filled with glee.
Cool Hand Luuuuuuuke.......hits it the perverbial mile. But will his fiery temper hold up under pressure ?
Rosey.....always a slow starter, but solid as a Robert Rock, when he hits the lead.
Charl.....defending Champion, but can we really take much more of that gawd awful South African accent ?
Scotty/Stevie.......will the long putter work its magic,or will Mr Williams be too busy looking over his shoulder ?
Jason G'Day.......that prolific winner, often compared with Wee Rory by our Oz chums. Surely his time is near.
Bubba.....open collared, happy go lucky, hell raiser. His length is his weakness.
Bradley Keegan.....tipped up by my good self at over 100,when others were happy taking 80 ? Less than half that price now, sure to go very close.
Wee Dusty......the forgotten man of this Tournament ? Maybe. Not long of the tee,but putts for fun.
El Moanio......laid back, always in control of his emotions, can we expect the usual surge from Serg ?
Sir Nick Watney........if only he knew what day of the week it was......
G'Mac........pronounced 'DOE ELL,where I,and he,comes from.In the name of baby jeebus...NOOOOOOOO !!!!
Which brings us neatly onto The Webb. Ayee, now there's the rub. If anyone in this entire field is over priced,it is he. Comfortable in his belief in the Mighty Zeus, will the gawds be smiling on Homer, come Sunday ?
SS Stricker......dismal with the flat stick !!!

The only others to note are The Hunter,William Haas,Mr Palmer and Robert Wagner. Personally I wouldn't put YOUR money on them !!!!

So,to sum up...............It's John Huh,to stroll home.
Kevin Na to win in a play off,and Wee Rory by a distance.

People think he doesn't have the bottle to win a major and perhaps its true that he loses his nerve a little but his recent record in majors is good.

think all this talk about Tiger, Rory, Phil etc is just way too easy, punters need to look beyond the obvious picks here,

V, v excited now, just 3 days to go ExcitedExcited

Some fantastic value prices out there so here are my thoughts fwiw. Gl with all bets folks HappyHappy

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson are all heading into the season's first Major in prime form but at almost 3 times the price of his two main rivals it's the San Diego native who gets the nod to lift his fourth Masters crown at a very attractive 12/1.

Mickelson is enjoying another stellar year with victory at Pebble Beach in February followed by a Playoff loss to Bill Haas at The Northern Trust Open the very next week. He ranks 3rd on official PGA Stats this season for Strokes Gained-Putting, is 14th in Scrambling and 26th in Par 5 Performance, three key areas for this week's challenge at Augusta. The Masters Champion of 2004, 2006 and 2010 covets this tournament above all others and with the world's media focused on a rejuvenated Tiger Woods and the outstanding young talent that is Rory McIlroy, Mickelson will be aided by a lower than usual profile in his quest for a fourth Masters title.

Woods and McIlroy will of course be very tough to beat and are afforded maximum respect. Woods has been playing more like the champion of old in recent months and his outstanding performance when holding off a spirited Graeme McDowell to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational will have filled him with confidence as he attempts to lift his first Masters crown since 2005. However he has demonstrated some vulnerability with his putter over the past year or two, namely with makeable birdie putts and putts for par that at his peak he would have sank with almost monotonous regularity. The winner will be the man with the hottest putter of the week and at as short as 4/1 favourite, and with Paddy Power offering money back to all punters if he wins, Tiger is not for me.

The impact Rory McIlroy has had on the world of golf of in the past two years is almost impossible to quantify. He is an outstanding natural talent who has started to fulfil his potential in the most spectacular way with a demolition job at Congressional last year on his way to his first Major Championship at The US Open. The course at Augusta sets up perfectly for his eye and with an impressive victory this season at The Honda Classic already under his belt he looks set to go very close to lifting the first of what could be multiple Masters titles and he is in my view the most likely winner. However although he is generally immaculate from tee to green, he is a solid putter without being spectacular and does not convert as many of his opportunities for birdies or tournament victories as he should. With last year's Final Round collapse sure to play on his mind if he gets in contention on Sunday night I am prepared to give him a miss at 5/1.

Justin Rose has been on my shortlist for this year's event for several months now and although the fancy prices have gone he is still well worth backing at 33/1 with **** offer of 6 places. Always a very strong iron player he has developed the winning instinct over the past few seasons with four PGA Tour victories in the past two years, including both The Memorial AND the AT & T National in 2010. He is enjoying an outstanding season with victory at The World Golf Championships- Cadillac Championship last month coming hot on the heels of his fifth place at The Honda Classic. He ranks 11th in Greens In Regulation this season and 19th in Ball Striking and with an excellent Masters record of 11-20-36-5-22 in his past five appearances he looks primed to challenge very strongly for his first Major.

The 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell is playing right at the peak of his powers at the moment and he rates excellent value at 66/1 with Stan James to add a Green Jacket to his trophy cabinet. The Northern Ireland man feels he has not done himself justice at Augusta during his career so far and resolved to change that this season by adopting a busier than usual schedule in the build-up to the year's first Major in order to hone his game. It is a decision that has reaped dividends with his three PGA appearances in March yielding a 9th, 13th and a battling runner-up finish to Tiger at Bay Hill. At The 2009 Masters he opened and closed with excellent rounds of 69 so we know he can handle the course and a US Open Champion should be right at home with the lightning fast greens and intense pressure that will face the competitors on a Sunday afternoon at Augusta. He ranks 17th in GIR and 30th in Strokes Gained-Putting and has everything in his locker that a potential Masters Champion needs.

For our final selection I have a question: what price would you expect for a recent Masters Champion whose last four visits to Augusta have yielded a 15-14-20-WIN and who is coming off the back of an excellent 11th place finish at The Arnold Palmer Invitational last week where he ranked 1st in Putts Per Round? How about 100/1 for The 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman? The humble South African has endured a torrid time with injuries, both before and after his finest hour four years ago, but has been showing some exciting recent signs that his form is returning. His effort at Bay Hill was no flash in the pan as he had already posted a fine 12th place result at The Waste Management Phoenix Open in February. With Paddy Power and **** both offering six places each way this is no 100/1 shot in my book.

P Mickelson 12/1 3pts win (Skybet & BetVictor)

J Rose 33/1 1.5pts ew (**** 1/4 odds first 6 places)

G McDowell 66/1 1pt ew (Stan James 1/4 odds first 5 places)

T Immelman 100/1 0.5pt ew (Paddy Power & **** 1/4 odds first 6 places)

Already advised:

T Bjorn 230
P Lawrie 500
JM Olazabal 730

Jacobsen is an interesting one. He most certainly has the right stuff on the greens, just whether the rest of his game is up to it. Still debating him.

Only one real bet so far, Luke at 18's. Boy wonder & Phil will be hard to beat, don't fancy tiger, also had the usual w&pl on Pod, may get a trade hopefully. Will add one more, maybe Webb as seems popular with the forumites here. Will try and make my dough on the 3/2 ball markets through the week.

GL all, love this tourney, next only to The Open IMO.

Masters Monday for me entails purchasing a few cases of Magners Pear Cider and a bottle of Aberlour Scotch Whiskey. ( for the weekend )
The High Street Shops will be doing special offers concerning Woods and Wee Rory,so I would advise waiting until Wednesday before going in heavilly on those Two.

Agree with you there Paddy,The Masters is my favourite Tournament of the whole year, apart from The Open, but only because the Beeb do such great coverage.

Three more days of looking longingly at the fridge and the Masters Market........it's like Krimbo....only much more exciting !! Excited

Actually it isn't.....very average.....won a few tournaments with flashes of brilliance.....layers dream because he's over-rated thus low odds at the start.....ridiculously too low when he gets one birdie on Thursday

@ Ski-Wiz its a myth you cant drink on antibiotics, as there are only two of the dozens of different antibiotics that are affeted by alcohol. However, one of them is methotrexate, often used by dentists, so you could be scoobied anyway.

I have a small book running so far - liability 170 - going to take it up to 500 before the start - last real book on golf was decent wins 2k+ on dj and mickleson when clarke won ( still see that ball bouncing over the bunker ) . Any thoughts on leaving rory and woods, I have but woods looks certain to do something - obv the value with people in the 40s - 120 ish range.

Thoughts appreciated

As for whisky - ey - I love the stuff , none in at the moment - like mine to be salty and smokey aka bowmore
