Only just in to just watch the afternoon round now please excuse my golf ignorance but what happened on the 72th hole RCB drives into thick grass how does he receive a free drop and is allowed to play shot 2 after the drop looked like one that got away for Arnaus what price did he hit at the low

I think it was because his stance would have been on the cart path
Under the rule of golf 24-2b, a golfer is entitled to free relief from a cart path if the ball comes to rest upon the path or the golfer's swing or stance is inhibited by the path. |

Obviously I am pocket talking here...but...
He drove in to deep grass but yes his stance was impeded by having to stand on the cart path...so under the generic rule you mention he has a full driver length relief...this gets him virtually clear for the deep grass on to shorter grass albeit not an easy route in to the ball... why is the rule not just a sufficient distance to gte him clear of the stance of the path - that was only a foot or foot and a half as opposed to say 5 ft length of driver....admittedly he still had it all to do from the resultant bunker shot but was it not a classic example we see regularly still of a player (legitimately) taking advantage of a rule that doesnt really do what it is supposed to do..ie penalise a player properly for a poor shot..... |
