Today sees the running of the Eider Chase in Newcastle, a race that still makes my stomach churn when I recall last year's renewal.  It's a grueling enough affair at the best of times, but to let the 4m 1f slog go ahead last year, on very heavy ground, was a shameful decision.  People in racing talk about the damage done to our sport by the last Grand National (two fatalities, and whipgate), well I think if the general public were to see last year's Eider Chase then the sport would be in the dock answering bigger questions.  Of course, this is all just my own personal opinion, but it's definitely a race I have no fondness for.

On a more positive note, it's coming up to Cheltenham Festival time, and those of you who were following last year will remember the success we had.  Racing is pretty quiet in he weeks leading up to the festival, but we should have some positive selections on the blog.

Well, I was half right with my recent opinion on Striding Edge.  The horse has been sitting on a mark he's more than capable of winning from for a while now.  My concern, and lack of enthusiasm to back, has come from the weak rides of the apprentice on board on the most recent outings.  Completely different story on Wednesday evening past when the jockey delivered the ride of her life, to win easily at Kempton.  Whilst I'm disappointed we missed out on the 9/1, I'm happy that I've called it right about the horse's ability, even if I did misjudge the jockey's!

Not even close with yesterday's three selections.  Deny was particularly disappointing.  I had though he would continue to improve from his recent 2nd and 3rd over the same tip, and continuiing to ride off a fether weight he would at least go close.  Alas, yesterday showed that he's probably tired from his recent exertions.  We may well be able to draw a line through yesterday's run, and back again at a decent price.

Our old friend Striding Edge is again out today (Kempton 7.30), and again they persist with the inexperienced claimer on board.  We will just watch again.

I've only just realised I titles yesterdays bets as "18th January" instead of February.  Apologies, but I'm sure you all seen through that.
Royal Guardsman ran a belter in the bumper at Ascot, to give us another profitable day, on top of Swincombe Flame's commendable 3rd.  I thought I'msingingtheblues ran a cracker behind an impressive Riverside Theatre, and was unlucky to finish just out of the places.

On to today, and I was gutted this morning to see the price slashed on Flying Award in the 2.30 @ Ffos Las.  At 14/1 I felt he was terrific value, but a quick look around I've seen that Hugh Taylor has put him up on ATR as his selection.  So, the current 7/1 offers no value for me, so no bet :(

Some decent profit yesterday, with Montbazon and For Non Stop both winnning their races impressively.  We look forward to seeing them again at Cheltenham in March.  We also saw the benefit of shoping around yesterday, with Olofi coming in 5th in the Betfair Hurdle.  We advised 11/1 with Bet 365, who were one of only two bookmakers paying each way five places.  Some more good racing today.
