They have the same odds and in practical terms it makes no difference. However, in the extraordinarily unlikely event that you take down a jackpot, you can lessen the chance of sharing it, by avoiding numbers commonly chosen by others.
The different lottery draw games actually have different odds depending on the jackpot amount.
For e.g, you have better odds of winning the Lotto jackpot than the Euromillions jackpot.

Sadly the main draws for Euro-millions (from the outset) and Lotto (since the addition of the extra 10 numbers) have been mathematically designed to "roll-over" much more often than not and create massive (almost obscene) Jackpots which play well to marketing/advertising.With that in mind, although it is always still going to be a mug bet (or just a bit of fun) - you'd be as well to incorporate Dave's advice but also to only play when the Jackpots (quite frequently) reach the "must be won" stage - where in all likelihood they still won't be won - but at least the prize money will "roll-down" and give you approx double the (bad) value that you are getting in a normal week.As a bonus - if everybody did this, the feckers would hopefully rethink the format! - and focus on creating as many millionaires as possible instead of giving obscene amounts to a very small handful of people.
Go with random numbers every time, can you imagine if you used the same numbers every time and forgot to buy a ticket the week they came up. The chance of it happening is tiny, but you'd kick yourself forever if it did happen!
As other posters have said, the odds are the same, but the psychological effect of changing strategy at the wrong time would be huge.

Were I to play the Lottery, I would pick my own numbers, but pick them all from the range above 31.My thinking being that people choosing numbers might well choose significant dates as part of their choice, so 1-12 and 1-31 will be over-bet compared to the average, and winning tickets including such numbers are likely to have - on average - lower payouts.
There was a story only a few years back that a couple had setup a direct debit of £2.50 for the Euromillions Lottery always using the exact same numbers they had saved on their NL Account but 5 weeks later they had forgotten to top up their balance and their exact same numbers had come up the following draw game with the jackpot being £180+ million.
Needless to say that would never happen if you always choose lucky dip for the draw games.
