For the first time in my life I've managed to work my way upto a £10,000 betting fund. I've been betting/trading for 8 years of my life now and I have recorded almost all of the transactions I've ever made. Yet it would take me an age to go through them all, there's at least two hundred thousand different bets/trades there, all sorts of different systems and methods. The turnover on all those bets is a massive figure and if I even had a small edge I should be up considerably up by now

But the thing is after all that time, all those bets, I have more or less at the break-even point now and this £10,000 I sit on I would have had anyway had I not bet a single penny. But they say that's the first achievement don't they? getting to the point where I'm breaking even?

I've had a really good October and it had me thinking that maybe just maybe I could one day do this full-time. My question is a £10k betting fund enough to start with and earn a serious wage? I do know a number of fairly "low-risk" methods which I think could earn me an easy £100-£150 week without much fuss as long as I stick to the plan.

Maybe I don't take it too seriously though and I am guilty of losing my discipline at times. The fact is numerous times I've been back to around the £1,000 mark and I build myself up again, go down again, build myself up again. Then the same happened around the £5,000, where I've found myself this last year. But as I said the good October (especially yesterday) got me having dizzy daydreams about taking it more serious.

It all started out as fun but the hours I've put in is jus tplain silly. So what I'm wondering now is this just the upside of the luck curve? and maybe I should get out whilst I have the money there or should I continue with the adventure and try and make a living from doing so.

By the way I recently quit my job and I don't really feel like appyling for anything at the minute because I look at the wage and think, I could easily earn that betting if I put my mind to it.

So I'm not sure what I'm asking exactly, I'm at cross-roads really, anyone with similiar stories? what did you do? and any advice on what to do with a £10k fund, ideas outside gambling/trading also welcome?

Keep doing whatever made you the last 9k.

It sounds like you do have winning edges, but you lose by punting where you don't have an edge.

My advice is keep as a hobby. With the PC, there would be hardly any real professionals left on here, and probably none that don't use bots. And I speak as a long term, PC paying winner.

What's a serious wage?  There's been a fair few threads on this over the years; I'll try to bump one.

Of those 200k bets/trades made to date, try breaking it down by sport/market, to see which methods are giving the best returns so allowing you to narrow it down a bit so you can use your time more efficiently looking further into those area.

This.

But I'd put it more strongly. Narrow it down to only the things that are very obviously winning. Do only that, and see if you can profit in a super consistent way. Only then consider going full-time.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Like I've never really been interested in making mega-bucks I was working a pretty boring 9-5 admin job that paid minimum wage so I was only taking home around £270 a week. Anything in the £250-£300 per week region is comfortable for me, more would obvioulsy be nice. If I could do £20,000 a year I'd be happy with that.

Premium charge isn't an issue for me at the moment since I'm down considerably on here over the time mentioned but up the bookmakers.

You are probably on the upside of the luck curve. If you have no discipline you have no chance of doing this full time. If you have gone from 10k to 1k and back up again it also sounds like you are just getting lucky chasing more than anything.  No serious punter loses 90% of their bankroll.
Report dlarssonf November 6, 2015 6:50 PM GMT
Well first out vis he wasn't a serious punter when he lost 90% of his bankroll.  Also he can learn from his experiences and there is nothing to say he can't instill some bankroll management.  Only he knows whether he has them traits but there is no reason he can't turn that aspect aroung

I went pro in August with a 15k bank and I'm enjoying it,   its a massive decision really dependent on your circumstances.  I lost a contract and was self employed anyway so it kind of made my mind up.  I've doing quite well, making steady profits but overall I reckon I earn less than I did when working full time and just punting on the side.  But lifestyle is much better.  My nagging fear is that that something will change re betfair or I lose my edge but I'll try and enjoy it while it lasts.

To the OP - if you think you can quite easily make 5-8k a year with the 10k bank (100-150 per week) then you definitely have an edge & by the end of year 1 you'd have 15-18k then you need to ask yourself whether what you are doing is scaleable. If so then in a few years of compounding (or increased bank at least) you'd be doing pretty well.

I think the bigger question is how much time is this taking and whether you enjoy it and feel its worthwhile use of your time. Making 25k tax free on here for 100 hours a week sitting in front of a screen for example may not be worth your time/health/relationships. Only you know what you have to put in to achieve your results.

Very true.  Nothing lasts forever, especially in this game. All edges have a life span so milk it while you can.  On the up side there are always new opportunities out there its just a case of finding them.

Constant evolution is the key to survival.
Report ZEALOT December 11, 2015 10:44 AM GMT
In racing there are some edges that will last forever . The markets wont necessarily adjust in order to stop a certain type of horse from being underbet .

it's not about  how much a Pro makes NOW but how much he has made in the past from gambling .

If he owns a house outright for example or has a lump some  being invested in other areas   that has to be added to his 'today income'

So in 2016 ,a pro gambler making 'peanuts' may well be making much more than his counterpart  working  every day paying off his mortgage .

Just a thought Happy
