Wanted to place a bet on the Nadal match at the Australian Open tonight. All the markets are empty on the exchange. Click on the sportsbook and they don't even have any odds for total games?

That's what you get when you hire someone from paddy power I suppose, clueless odds makers. Seems like the only thing Betfair are good for these days is conning people with price rush and cash out.

I forgot to add, they are good for Octopus images on the sportsbook too. What on earth is all that all about.

* Australian wallet.
* You can't find any Australian markets on the main site - they're not even listed on the front page and clicking on the "Australian Open this way" banner takes you to a list of empty "there's no match on" type text.

Plus it's middle of the night.

It's pathetic really but nigh-on entirely of Betfair's making.

It's a waste of time looking on the exchange for the Aus open. Problem is no bookmakers take bets. Opened an account with Luxbet, drawn in by a £150 bonus and they don't take bets. Wouldn't accept £100 and they're not even top price or involved in any arb. I made £675 with the bonus bet but finding it impossible to rollover the winnings and get my money out. Tip: Do not open an account with Luxbet. They are horrific.

So sad Pinnacle and Sbobet have pulled out of the UK due to the POC tax. Not worth risking using an agent to bet with them in my opinion.

Yep, markets such as Total Games on the Australian Open (and other tennis events) have all but died.  They've been getting worse year on year (ever since the PC was introduced) and this year is so bad I've not even bothered with them.  Were staple markets for me 3+ years ago.

The Nadal match was 7pm in Australia and 8am in the UK, so not a case of it being the "middle of the night".

It's been the same with every match I've looked at.

I've taken a bunch of screenshots and sending them to my account manager to see if I can get anything other than a stock answer.

Take a look at the Murray match tonight. Not a penny matched on anything apart from match odds at 1.03. All the markets empty. Betfair sportsbook doesn't even have prices for handicap or total games? No wonder all the forums are dead, everyone has left!

If it keeps following the same trend I see the following within 5 years

1. Betfair left with a struggling Blue Square Sportsbook which will die naturally soon after.
2. Exchange customers finding a new home either through a well funded new entrant(s) or an existing bookmaker taking on the Exchange baton.

There is no chance of many of the Betfair Exchange customers moving to the Sportsbook and not many new customers will be back after viewing the Sportsbook prices as there is better value out there at every Bookmaker.

Don't think I have seen such a misguided  business strategy that appears geared towards destroying a fantastic business idea, a business once adored by the customer base and more importantly is a guaranteed risk free profitable business model.

The operative phrase is "risk free profitable business model."

This is what I don't get; why do they need feel the need to move away from the exchange model? It is literally money in the bank.

Maybe Im being naive but wouldn't it be great if Betfair could just be content with being the best betting exchange in the world.  If that was the case the business would be untouchable as the competition would never be able to lure Betfair's customers away.
Report YOMOMMA January 22, 2015 4:21 PM GMT
The Betfair mission statement must read: To be a run of the mill sportsbook with a rapidly declining exchange in the background which charges through the teeth.

I said above I was going to get in touch with my account manager, well he called me first!  He asked why I hadn't had a bet on the Aussie Open so far.  It indicates to me they are becoming concerned with certain markets dying. Nadal, Murray, Serena, etc side markets being dead in a Grand Slam has been on the cards for the last couple of years and I think we're more or less there.  It will be interesting to see what they're response is, if there is one.

Since Breon Cocoran took over, the share price has gone from about 750p to 1500p. He'll be a much in demand CEO now.  I very much doubt he cares where the exchange will be in a few years as he'll be out of here.

It's against the law for courtsiders to operate on the AUS open. Betfair must not allow these criminals use of this platform. It's for customers own protection and Betfairs.
Report siwaadupa January 22, 2015 10:53 PM GMT
"Betfair must not allow these criminals use of this platform" - Feck N. Eejit was more dangerous for betfair and got banned than courtsiders and bots.
Report bongo January 22, 2015 11:08 PM GMT
Big difference between courtsiding which is criminal activity with just one crim gang accounting for 20% plus of early action at last years AUS open, and bots which are not illegal. Unless the crims are operating the bots of course.

Tried finding the australian site on the exchange was a nightmare, basically can't be bothered, they don't want your money on the exchange has our staff work 9to5.look at bet365 and you can see at least they make a effort.whatever the excuses might be ,they are telling us to go elsewhere unless you play uk horses or premiership football.
Report chicken shack January 23, 2015 1:32 AM GMT
Having navigating between old site and new site logging in each time ,I find new site with indivual tennis matches and then the nightmare begins again, betfair have proved a point in that our resources going into our sports book are correct has our shareprice is on the way up.with gambling you are only has good has your client numbers.

I think I have now found my problem in placing bets'i am using a ipad, having the slowness of having used a computer which may have helped the faster merchants in scalping me,I now look at betfair offer and bet 365 ,which I know only £5o will get accepted at bet365 but at least I am on.

FFs sorry about bleating about my problems ,but I can now see a proper betting site ie like bet365 on betfair on there old site after 2hours,maybe the austrAllian open is a pain in there arse at this time of night, but I would prefer betfair to tell me ,can't be asked,a bit like going ina supermarket that has no basics ie bread, milk, potatoes and telling me we had them here at 6.00  but you should come in earlier.

If you read up on the matter, it is not "against the law".  Infact, the case last year in January was dropped by the police.

The police have sinced said it is a "data rights issue" (transmitting the points).  But as far as I know, you are allowed to sit with your cell phone and place bets.

If someone has links stating otherwise, please post.

The introduction of the sportsbook is another reason. Betfair have stolen a lot of casual punters from the exchange.

It's happening in more and more sports but I think the sudden plummet in tennis side markets won't be the first sport to have markets killed off by Betfair's greed.

bongo, nothing in that says Courtsiding is illegal.

In Victoria it is now illegal to:
 ‘Engage’ in or ‘facilitate’ conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of an event or event contingency
 Conceal such conduct, agreements or arrangements
 Use corrupt information for betting purposes.

Courtsiding does not do any of these things; it merely gives a person the information QUICKER than those watching at home.
Report bongo January 24, 2015 6:53 PM GMT
"Prior to the introduction of the new legislation, the AO had event rules in place that banned courtsiding and those suspected of doing it could be expelled from Melbourne Park where the event takes place. The change in legislation means they can now be charged with an offence"

If anyone thinks it's ok in Victoria, all they need is an example where someone has been allowed back in to the event after successfully arguing: "'didn't do anything illegal guv"'
These people are utter scum, they've ripped off punters here who had a reasonable expectation that they were protected from them and only competing against people more knowledgeable and skilled than them. And betfair used to allow it, cos when mates are paying PC it's ok, and the victims losing at a few % more than expectation are pretty well faceless. And now this jurisdiction of Victoria labels then as criminal scum, and if betfair allows criminals to operate ( they can identify who they are as they can run algorithms identifying bets entering the market before the fastest authorised data feed ) then they could lose their licence with the GC.

most, if not all P/C payers can not get a bet with the sportsbook, or £10 max, saved me £400 the other day Cool
Report PLEASE TELL THE TRUTH January 24, 2015 7:21 PM GMT
As most of the money in the exchange is now generated by P/C payers or Automated programs, just makes me wonder where all the sportsbook punters are coming from Confused, maybe the casual punter migrated over with the dying markets on the exchange, maybe that was the strategy and still is Shocked
Report Ted Brogan January 24, 2015 9:55 PM GMT
They may THINK that they have made it so that they can be charged with an offence, but I don't see how it can be. It says that it is illegal only if their court siding breaks one of the 3 above rules it sets out. Court siding simply doesn't break any of these.

IMO it simply shows the Victoria government's complete lack of understanding of what courtsiding actually is. They seem to think that people who are sat courtside are match fixers, which is simply not the case.

Football on the Exchange has time, score etc.  Or are you looking at the old site (which hasn't been updated in years) and complaining that the features that are on the new site aren't there?  If so, comparing (old) Exch site with (new) Sportsbook site is a strange way to draw conclusions about where BF want your money.
