Anyone got any ideas?

Is it going to be one of those big build-up things that turns out to be something of a damp squib?

Guess we'll find out one way or another on Wednesday anyway... Plain

Something to do with an octopus apparently. Remember the one at the last World Cup (or was it Euros?) who was predicting all the matches? Think Betfair have a stunt planned around a large model octopus presumably doing something along similar lines ...

If it's to do with an octopus, let's hope it isn't a damp squid...

A betting website has apologised for bringing central London to a halt this morning after a truck carrying a giant replica of an octopus for a PR stunt broke down at Oxford Circus.

Betfair has said it is sorry for "any inconvenience caused" by the stunt, which caused delays for motorists and bus users.

The model was being driven across the capital ahead of the World Cup when it apparently broke down in the middle of the crossing on Oxford Street at about 9am.

The flat bed truck hired from Roman Self Drive was later moved to Regent Street, where it blocked one lane of traffic northbound at the junction with Margaret Street.

In a statement on its official Twitter feed, Betfair said: "We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused by the breakdown this morning at Oxford Circus.

"While transporting a prop which was used in a recent advertising campaign, unfortunately our truck broke down on its way to a holding location".

Speaking to the Standard, the truck's driver Ala Miah said he was delivering the octopus to Betfair's offices in Hammersmith when the vehicle "broke down".

The bizarre sight sparked a frenzy on social media, with people speculating what the model could be intended for.

Simon Pegg tweeted: "Twitter is alive with reports of a giant octopus in Oxford Circus. This is like prologue to Monsters: Westminster".

Dan Hodges said: "Someone, somewhere is currently screaming into the phone 'Where's my bloody octopus!!! I need that octopus"!!!!'"

But some users were less impressed, saying the stunt had caused them unnecessary delays.

Fred Dutton said: "True story: Late for work today thanks to giant squid blocking traffic on Oxford Street."

Matt Locke said: "Just had to get off my bus and walk as giant octopus is blocking Oxford Circus."

Meanwhile others suggested the prank was too predictable.

Dennis M wrote: "What were the odds, I wonder, on delivery of Betfair's giant replica Paul the Octopus breaking down on Oxford Circus?"

Circus Street posted: "The breakdown is genuine, according to some sleuth work by @RichLeighPR but he belongs to Betfair".

At the 2010 World Cup, an octopus named Paul predicted the outcome of eight matches.
