7 selections for 6.30 race in Ireland
 ...........and 7 for 8.40 race !Can't see you making a success of this with too many selections in 1 race. OK ....you might hit a good odds winner, but is it down to LUCK or "edge". As you naturally have not disclosed your selection method, then you need to address your methods. Do you know where you do best? IRELAND is a tough market to attack. Do you rate every horse in the races where selections come from? If you do, then detailed analysis of results on ratings probably the way forward. As you have made thousands of selections it wil probably take you 2/3 years to find out the "best" way to use ratings and to have betting strategies that "work" based on edge. GL |

I don't agree that I need to address my methods. I base my selections on the belief that every horse can win the race it is in and all that matters for long term profitability is the price of the winners.
If a race contains 18 runners and I believe 7 of those runners will be running at odds greater than my assessment of their chances, I will make that horse a selection. Now, by putting these selections up well in advance of racing I am taking a risk that the market swings so much so that the prices become not so attractive but my margin for that to happen is so great that it would take an enormous swing to materialise. Huge investment is required to see this through but by doing so it has made large returns for ten years, with a real live setting from December 2011. Off the subject slightly but Thackeray today finished 2nd at a massive BSP of 180. What a result that would have been. Even the 80/1 industry price was far too big but a loser in 2nd place is equal to a loser in 20th place. What positives I can take out of this is the amount of horses running close and getting placed at huge odds which tells me the prices are wrong, albeit with no financial reward for the time. |

Buddles - Thackery did not win.
Favourite won ....and SFC return was 149.42. So all depends on you look at result. You state that " 2nd place is equal to a loser in 20th place"........This statement is not "true"......IF you did SFC or RFC.....or traded in running....or backed to place ( BF place was 22.21). I don't believe that " every horse can win the race".......No idea why you select the ones you do......if you had a rating method, then your ratings would indicate which horses were/are value based on RANK position and SP ODDS. You could then narrow down the number of selections. If you analysed your results re PLACES/WINS.......you might find a strategy to back to PLACE, depending on odds and chances of winning( RANK position one way). Either start backing them , or by analysing results find another way forward. GL |

As far as backing a horse to win - nothing more, nothing less- finishing 2nd is a loser. I will be honest and admit that I have absolutely no idea how your last post above was meant to be received. Really, I don't get why you say those things. Moving on to your next point - my opinion is that every horse has its price, perhaps you don't believe this. One thing I do want to state very clearly, do not mistake my lack of financial involvement for a lack of knowing what I am talking about. I didn't just stumble in here blind. I don't mean that to sound aggressive in any way, I just want to make it clear you are not talking to a child who has wandered into a betting shop. Backing to place would show a loss, a large loss. I never said you said Thackery won.Nothing wrong in mentioning how close a high odds one came to winning. You also quoted me above but left out crucial words - I stated "a loser in 2nd place is equal to a loser in 20th place" - you can't then point out other ways finishing 2nd would not be a loser which are irrelevant. As far as backing a horse to win - nothing more, nothing less- finishing 2nd is a loser. All I was doing was being a bit critical of you calling a horse finishing 2nd as being the same as a horse finishing in 20th place. The statement is just not accurate enough and a bit casual. The horse finishing 20th would get you a SFC....fact. Therefor I highlighted that one way to benefit from high odds horses finishing 2nd or 1st is considering the COMBINATION STRAIGHT FORECAST type of bet.......but this would take you further research on detailed analysis of your results to find a betting strategy for making selections which can get you achieving a profit from a horse finishing 2nd at 20-1. The favourite beat it ....so perhaps cnsidering a strategy of taking the fav as 1 of selections + your high odds horses + possibly including other selections , that meet the value test at the shorter end of market, + your selections = say say 6 selections = 30 bets in COMBINATION SFC ....would have achieved a "winning" bet from the 2nd "loser" with return 149.62 on race= profit 119.62. I am not saying your selections were "poor" or "good".....if you believe they are "value" according to your method of selection that is consistent enough to make a profit with long losing runs, then great! Start betting. However , you have indicated your concerned about "money management" when the long losing runs occur, which they will, and just indicating the CSF type bet might "work" for you IF you analysed your results in depth. I will be honest and admit that I have absolutely no idea how your last post above was meant to be received. Really, I don't get why you say those things. I've indicated that just putting a 2nd high odds horse as being the same as a 20th placed loser is you blocking out an option you may not have considered . Moving on to your next point - my opinion is that every horse has its price, perhaps you don't believe this. What you state now in above sentence I agree with......but, I reacted to you stating that "every horse can win" statement, this GENERALLY is IMO too bland a statement. "VALUE" is the most important factor, and as long as your method of selection is based on having "edges", then you can make profit, provided your BETTING STRATEGY generally works for you. It is hard to follow how well you are doing on thread....as you don't detail when a selection is winner or place. I just get an impression that for the number of selections SO FAR on thread, that your strike rate for high odds winners may not be high enough. As we are now into JUNE with JULY rapidly approaching, this might be the wrong time of year for you catching high odds winners. One thing I do want to state very clearly, do not mistake my lack of financial involvement for a lack of knowing what I am talking about. I didn't just stumble in here blind. I've no idea how old you are, or how knowledgeable you are, or how good your methods are in making selections......but my "gut feeling" from what you are posting is that you are seeking high odds winners, when the VALUE is probably the lower odds horses, at VALUE ODDS, that are winning . You are bound to hit a HIGH ODDS winner now and then, but is this LUCK or EDGE, and will it be enough at this time of year for it to be profitable. Backing to place would show a loss, a large loss. Again it depends which BETTING STRATEGY you adopt with your selections........analysing results might indicate a STRATEGY with PLACE bets that can work for you with the VALUE ODDS horses. One thing you have said which I agree on - you have no idea why I select the ones I do. How could I.....you stated at start that this is not a topic for discussion. BTW....are you IRISH, as you appear to select many horses in IRISH RACING.......and it is a very tricky market to tackle. Have you analysed how you do with BRITISH bets and IRISH bets......as you might see where you are "best" at achieving profitable returns? Different BETTING STRATEGIES work at different times of seasons, and with NH, TURF and AW racing. Have you broken down your results between NH, TURF and AW bets? Perhaps you already have....again I've no idea how deeply you have studied your results. You might be in a position to filter down number of bets, or ODDS criteria, depending on type of race and time of year. I know this is alot of work, but you can access some free sites where you can feed in whatever criteria you think is "relevant" to check whether worth filtering down bets or changing selection methods to improve ROI etc etc. Anyway ....GL with thread....and GM the noooooooooooooooo |

I'm used to getting HIGH ODDS winners when I use the "system"......but no energy this year to use damn thing
.Not surprised Buddles has had a few winners last few days.....but is it down to LUCK, ie the number of high odds ones chosen, or down to the having an "edge"??? Buddles is the one that knows what he /she is doing, as he/she has not told us   WD Buddles.....Hope it continues for you....... |

Buddles, if your selection method wins at level stakes, then you do not need to worry too much about bank management. Just get together a big enough bank to withstand say twice your worst drawdown and start betting.
If your bank is growing, increase your level stake by say 20% when your bank is 20% bigger. Keep on doing this or revert to your minimum size if your bank falls back below the 20% bigger threshold. It is not too difficult to make your first 2k or 3k just through taking advantage of bookie sign-up offers and arbing off the cash. This could give you your initial betting bank. After that, if you keep getting value in any price band and at any strike rate, you will win, so long as you are controlled with level stakes. If you are able to estimate by how far odds are 'out', then Kelly staking (staking a fraction of your bank that will optimally grow yr bankroll) is a step forward, but it doesn't sound as if you actually need this. |

If you are useless with money, take all the thinking out of it. Follow two or three bullet-headed, purely mechanical rules e.g. always level stakes, bet sizes ratcheted to the size of your bank, exactly the same procedure no matter whether you are doing well or badly.
You need to think of winning or losing on particular races in just the same way poker players do about how they play hands. Often they will make the right call and get a 'bad beat', but the right spirit is for them to think they've done well because they took a positive expectation bet. You need to train yourself to care only about the price and the edge, not the result. Do this mechanically. Find some stupid symbol that means something to you e.g. one day's disciplined betting wear a white rubber band round your wrist, three days a black band, ten days a red band. Do something that makes discipline seem external. It's easy to trick your mind this way. |
