36,000 runners in the London Marathon and yet the pathetic bookies only pay out on 3 places.  This has to be the biggest con of all time.  They must be making millions out of this.

Perhaps there are only about half a dozen
with a realistic chance of winning.

Winner and places are based on runners that are registered as 'elite' and the betting is based on those runners.

This year, there were 18 elite runners registered.

17 finished with the best times. One finished with 5 non-elite runners ahead of him but is still considered 18th in the elite category.

you've got to be in it to win it as they say.  Everyone has a chance and it has to be a bit of a lottery with so many entrants,  just like the Grand National.  What if there was a Foinavon type accident by a park or something where almost everyone fell over a hedge or something ?
