I guess my last failed challenged shows the good and bad of what I can do ..... although still disappointed by it I may as well get back up on the horse.

Going to a smaller challenge to see if I can put into practice elements of patience and control that I quite clearly don't possess at the moment ....

Starting Bank is £300 and the aim is to reach £3K.

Official start time: 11am 12th April 2014

Been out doing things so been in and out of the office playing .... should have stopped when the profit hit the £180 mark but carried on and been up and down since then. One thing though ... I am still not good when I have a losing bet ..Laugh

"....should have stopped when the profit hit the £180 mark"

6:15....still haven't stopped.  Instead of being happy with a profit, your mentality is you had £480.

undern....This is not a challenge.  It is simply gambling.

Challenge Update:
Lets just say it started out with good intentions ... but that soon evaporated later pon when I played a couple of USA horse races and forgot I wasn't supposed to be playing the greyhound TV races (up and down like a yo-yo)... anyway the day was profitable ..... time to call it a day.

Looking at the figures, you seem to be exposing a huge percentage of your bank for each play.
Report HonkyJoe • April 14, 2014 2:21 PM BST
Undern, why do you think that what you're doing here is an improvement on what you were doing on the other thread?    You're still putting in lots and lots of bets, and still risking too much relative to your bank.

Do you actually have any idea which types of event you have an advantage in?
Report undern • April 14, 2014 2:30 PM BST
Shapeshifter .... you are partly correct. Some are actually low odds favs or ir at low odds but yes I do acknowledge that some are a bit to heavy.

HonkeyJoe ... good comment. Only thing is that I am not spending as much time on the site. Also trying to make profit from profit ie: place bets using monies made for the day to try and get a roll of wins.

As for which events ... I do know well I think I do know ...
Report undern • April 14, 2014 2:40 PM BST
Also trying to relax a bit more rather than push too hard ...... far from perfect with this but just trying to not get involved with each and every market which comes my way.

Also trying to bet on here in shorter focused amounts .... then head off and do something else before coming back on.

What was the bet/stake on SWANSEA v CHELSEA match?

As you started with £300, it appears the staking was a huge % of bank. If so, so are "pushing too hard" undern.

Here it is .... before the sending off ...

Fixtures 13 April Swansea v Chelsea / Match Odds / Chelsea
Back        2.08    246.33    Won        266.04

I did do some greening up as well.
Report DFCIRONMAN • April 14, 2014 4:15 PM BST
So basically this bet turned a LOSS position on FOOTBALL into a profit.........but had SWANSEA not had a player sent off, this bet could easily have been a losing bet.

CHELSEA looked jaded ....and minds on CL match looming up probably, as well as feeling effects of mid-week game in CL.

Where is "edge" on such a bet ?( FOOTBALL is so volatile a sport to bet on......and refereeing decisions can soon wipe out how you believe a bet might go.) The % of bank risked is too high and this sort of betting will do you no good in future....so why do it?

Just looks like you are totally out of control on betting......with urges taking control.

Hope you can see this undern....as you really need to address your weaknesses before progressing.

GL
Report undern • April 14, 2014 4:59 PM BST
Yep I do have some urges but on the whole for this challenge I have been reasonably controlled and mindful of my betting .... I was happy enough with the Chelsea bet .... Swansea haven't done well at home and sense they are being sucked into relegation battle while thought Chelsea will find a way to nick the win ....

Challenge Update:
Well it is has been an interesting time since my last update .... bit tired and just about to head for dinner and probably take tonight off. After nice profitable day yesterday bet on the golf which came in but duely looked to make more and subsequently went backwards quickly ... played this morning and hit some big wins (low odds favs mainly) ... Love taking on low odds favs in Aussie greyhound finals. Did some painting .... back for more.

Got into a nice profitable position (and was going to update then) only to lay a steamer in a race .... then lay a greyhound race ... to put right back ... recovered and recovered some more so time to call it a day.

So, essentially, by betting "heavy", you get no reprieve if a ball bounces against you.

As well, with that much money on one part of an event, no opportunity to trade in-running on other aspects of the game to reduce losses.

It is one thing to have a big bank for TRADING (where most of your bank needs to be traded out BEFORE the event starts) but another when 80% of your bank goes on a bet.

Shapeshifter/DFC - I unnderstand where you are coming from however there sometimes simply explainations for why I have bet "so" much ..... in this case I pretty sure it was a case of win a nice amount (ie: looking at the betting for the day I would hazard a guess that I was sitting right on £546 mark for the challenge so I bet £246) otherwise the bank would be back to £300 starting bank .... ie: simply to start again which in my mind I am okay with that simply because the challenge only just started .....

When I do put some (not all) bets on I look at what level the bank would go back to and many cases bet a specific amount as if it lost the bank would be at a round neat figure .... seriously Laugh

Even for an Aussie ... that was poor grammar however hopefully it explains the reason why it was a relatively large amount compared to the level of the bank ...

Fair enough.  If I've had a good day and my reads have been solid, even on races I passed on, then I'll invest up to 50 or 60% of the afternoon the last two races I already have investments in.

But (repeat BUT), your runs, the last one under two weeks, has the following cycle when you are UP:

You lose and, instead of calling it a day, you then continue.  Infact, looking at today's posting, you did continue after the Chelsea game anyways and gave back 200 quid on Gimnasia La Plata v Arsenal FC which then led to giving back another £200 on U.S. horse racing.

So if you had shut down PRIOR to the Chelsea match, you would have been better off and had a chilled Sunday night.

The justification of saying you go back to the original start is not the right mind-set.  Each time your bank increases, this is your money.  You wouldn't be back at the original start.  You would have lost over £200.00.

Also, you are playing linear / one market on each event.  When laying, you are simply betting odds on (value?).

Tonight, I took on the Reading Leicester match.

I traded for 45 minutes before the off.  At kick-off, playing 3 markets (HT/FT, correct score/ Over 3.5 goals), my scenario was:
Total risk: 0% of bank
Minimum potential: 1% gain any result
Max potential: 10% (Reading 2-1)

At half-time, I added 1X2
Total exposure was 5% (if the match went over 5 goals so could easily be closed down in-running)
After 10 minutes, some quick trades and
Total risk: 0%
Minimum potential: 1% if the game stayed 1-1
Max potential now 8% but over 2-1 3-1

My point is that I have done this where I have had a pre-match potential of 25% with maybe a 1 or 2% risk with rewards inbetween depending on the result.

But at no time if a result goes against me, would I risk an enormous chunk of my bank on a single bet or position.

a) bank the £1,000 you lost before
b) bankd the £300 you put in this time.
c) bank (atleast) £60 and take a night off at the pub

Then, with the £1,000, do what you want BUT remember it is your money to be lost.

You had over £5,000 in your wallet last time (groceries for two for a year).

Change your mindset now and reap the rewards.

Just got back in from playing some sport ... the only problem in doing challenges like these and doing them in lets just say .... go hard (not always though) or go home fashion is that it is not easy to keep this type of betting up (as I keep finding out in my bigger £100K challenges) .... need to develop a happy medium.

Out of interest the following is the P&L breakdown of the challenge ...

One of your problems is that you seem to have no get-out target. No matter what you're up to, you seem to like putting almost the entire bank at risk. So at some point, you'll blow up and lose the lot.

You clearly like the excitement, and I'm not sure it's realistic for you to change to a duller 'banking the small profits' approach. You can maybe think like that when things are going well. But when you get hit by some annoying losses, the red mist descends and you just can't stop yourself from going crazy and banking the lot.

Even on the days where you claim you were fairly controlled, there seem to have been instances of significant bet sizes going in - it's just that, on those occasions, you win the money back almost immediately, so the day seems to have little in the way of real drama.

I suspect you'll have to find a system that suits your kamikaze approach, rather than kidding yourself that you can be disciplined and not chase losses - you really are such a very long way away from being able to achieve the latter.

So, rather than simply building indefinitely, why don't you aim instead to get £1K up to £3K?  If you make the £3K, you take out the £2K profit and start again. If you lose the money, then so be it. Rinse and Repeat.

As long as you're hitting the target once every three challenges then you're breaking even. Do better than that, and you're in profit.

While I assure you I can play sensibly ... yes I agree I tend to get caught in the moment ... whether its clawing back a loss, aiming to get that bit more profit or touching markets I shouldn't (although in this challenge I did pretty well in that dept) .... need to get the balance right ... I have a fair bit of work to get on with today and family responsibilities over the weekend but probably will start another  (mini) challenge today ...

undern....you are fooling yersel!

If anything you are getting "worse" on "control".

You like going in hard on bets........and from latest challenge from £300 were very very successful on doing that.

So rather starting with £1,000 to get to £3000...........why not just use a small bank like the £300 and once you get to say £600 profit to £900 profit....then start again. Once you accumulate say £ 1,500 profit ( withdrawing after achieving targets of £600 or £900 bank), then you can try doing it with £500 with targets £1,000 or £1500 profit etc etc. This way initially you stand to lose £300.....Once achieving first level of profit and banked it, you are ahead overall even if you blow the 2nd £300 bank.

I think you enjoy such high risk gambling, and you might fail on the 3 next challenges but might hit say £900 profit target on try 4......If you can get 2 challenges into profit target within 6 attempts at £900 profit target level , then you are into profit overall before starting again.( £600 profit from 6 attempts).

You have been blowing all bank on previous attempts as soon as you get to over £3,000 profit.........by the all in approach....which you have proved DOES NOT WORK!

Report HonkyJoe • April 17, 2014 3:52 PM BST
Agree with a lot of what DFC says.   Undern, I think your definition of 'can play sensibly' is a little bit flawed.

Playing sensibly means, essentially, *always* playing sensibly.  It doesn't mean playing sensibly when things are going well, but then going gung-ho as soon as you get an annoying loss or two. That's just normal out-of-control betting as far as most people are concerned.

It might be that you're getting a little sick of costly big splurges, but you still pop them in on a regular basis. So you ain't *that* sick of them...

Until you accept this part of your personality, and either build a form of betting that works with it (such as the smaller 1-3x or 1-4x challenges), or use physical restraints to stop yourself from betting after a certain level of losses (which would be pretty hard, if not impossible, to implement with your style of varied-frequent-betting), you won't get anywhere. Just murmuring to yourself that you can play sensibly will have no effect. We know you'll go bonkers as soon as you get a bad beat.

Whether to do challenges that start from £300 or ones that start from £1,000 are up to you. I don't get the idea that you're short of money, but it's possible that you've been exaggerating on that score in the past.  I would say that the important thing is to be looking to make an amount of money that you're satisfied with. At the same time, you don't want to be betting so much that you can't afford to lose the cash.

People go on a lot about the last bit. However, it's almost as dangerous to start off with too little. If, deep down, you're not happy with the amount of money you're winning, you're liable to go more quickly and take bigger risks in order to get to the next 'level' more quickly. And that's not a good thing either.    Choose an amount you're comfortable with, and one that's neither too large or too small for you.
