How many serious Betfair users still us the old site?  I had a look at the new site ages ago, didn't like it and switched back again.  Am I one of the few dinosaurs or am I doing the right thing?  Am I missing out on something good?  These days I am mainly backing, not trading or laying very often.

Report SHAPESHIFTER April 3, 2014 12:46 PM BST
I understand why they had to construct the new site (in layman's terms, bolting to the data base), but still stuns me graphically.

The old site is still easier to look at the prices 'at a glance', spacing of tiles, fonts, etc.
Report TheVis April 3, 2014 12:54 PM BST
Old site for me as well.  Haven't even looked at the new one in ages.  Gave up on it given BF's refusal to correct basic failures such as the listing of unmatched bets in odds order rather that just what appeared to be a random order on the new site.
Report TheVis April 3, 2014 1:13 PM BST
In fact just for the hell of it I thought I would look to see if things have changed, especially with the Grand National coming up and the Masters round the corner - both large field events that you may want to run a book on, or get involved in multiple runners.

So I just did a lay field on the National.  Back over open bets.  Teaforthree should be listed first right?  Not a bit of it.  My open bets has somehow decided Vesper Bell should be top of the list.  Teaforthree is listed second.  But hang on, I want to amend my Monbeg Dude bet to shorter odds.......OK Monbeg Dude, damn - scrolled down the list and couldn't find him.  Start again..  take it easy this time....Monbeg, Monbeg......hmmmm,   Ah found it - 6th from the bottom ffs Cry

Same sh*t as they say Laugh

Old site definitely for me, the new site is unusable
Report longbridge April 3, 2014 3:06 PM BST
I entirely get it when people say they prefer the old site for things like laying the field or speed of getting bets on.  What I can never get my head around is people who say they prefer how it looks - it's monumentally ugly IMO.  Is it just status quo bias (no one likes change)?

In 2003, I got a six month contract to bet on-line at the big six bookmakers (there were five of us, in all)  Each week for a year came a new task from simple tennis 1x2 to accumulators, etc.

Each week, a report on how long it took, easy, problems, etc.   I was paid to be 'direct', no sugar coating.

I had no idea which bookmaker had commissioned it.

Then, four months in, one bookmaker started improving.  And slowly I started seeing the changes implemented, aspects I had pointed out.

At six months, I got a call that they wanted to extend it another six months.  Fine.  I was the only one of the original ten and two others were added.

As the year went on, the site improved.  Things I pointed out at first took a month then, in some cases, overnight.  They took positives I said about other sites, improved their own and avoided negatives that everyone was doing

In the end, I came in for a final meeting at which point I met the the design team for a final view of the next version.

All nice, all enthusiastic.  But one thing in common - of the ten in the room, only two gambled on-line.

It's like having someone that doesn't have a driver's license designing the functionality of a car.

The other problem is branding takes precident over functionality.  The airlines often did this.  As well, the platform is filled with 'ads' for events, casino, poker cutting down on the actuall space for the info that you are seeking.

All common problems with web design (design!) v functionality.

I swear the sportsbook is laid out to cause confusion.  Look at the asian markets (the layout spread across the whole page, it gives no conditions of pay-out, returned stakes BUT has a huge block with blackjack/roulette and the latest casino game for the mindless).

Yawn....griping done for the month.  Nothing to see here....time to move along.

Report CoinFlip April 4, 2014 1:35 PM BST
Most of the time on the old site although I find navigation much easier on the new site.  I do a lot of bets with partial settlements and it can get pretty expensive when the new site pretends that it includes settled runners.

That's probably my only massive problem remaining with the new site.  That's not to say it's that good especially for a full re-design.  The old site is a bit like a classic car where once you know all the problems with it, you operate around them and get really good performance.

I guess in the same analogy the new site is an electric car where people tell you that it's better for everyone but when you run someone over who didn't hear you coming you're not so sure.

Report longbridge April 7, 2014 4:19 PM BST
I use the new, but I'm mainly a back-only pre-play racing punter, so the known downsides of the experience don't affect me, and I prefer the Timeform integration and the appearance of the new site.  Every time I'm forced back into the old site (Aus markets, Exch multiples) I'm struck with how ugly and last century it is - it looks like Windows 95, and that's not meant as a compliment.
Report Tom April 7, 2014 5:03 PM BST
The new site is horrendous. I am sure Ian Chuter the Ops Director said that the old site was definitely going 14/15 months ago. That it is still here shows you how bad customer reaction has been and what a failure the new site has been. The new site was only launched to incorporate the sportsbook and multiple type products. Like so much of Betfair the new site was designed by people who don't bet. I am sure that I heard somewhere that only 20% of their IT staff even have BF accounts let alone bet on here regularly. All that has ended up happening is that exchange users get a poorer and poorer deal whilst paying more for it.

Its going to be so interesting to see where BF is in five/ten years time. It is either going to go one of two ways. Either the BF management will be lauded for abusing their monopoly position quite so spectacularly or they will have brought to its knees a once great company by treating their customers with more disdain and arrogance than any other ever has.

I just hope that if it is the latter that the likes of Corcoran, Yu, Morana, Chuter et al are held accountable for horrendous decision making. No doubt in this ridiculous world we live in it will probably guarantee future success.

They're honestly scrapping the old one? That's ridiculous. Is there an announcement somewhere?

I never used to use any API but i do a bit now, but still find the site better for most things that I want. If forced to switch to the new site things are going to be a pain in the rear. I guess that's nothing new though, they like making it tough for their customers to get a bet on.

Just thought I'd have a look at the new site in case anything's changed and had a play on the Master's market.

Why on earth is it so slow? From clicking on a selection to it appearing in "My bets" must be nearly a second compared to virtually instant on the old site.

That means to lay half the field in a typical golf tournament is going to take a minute!

Old site without a doubt. I occasionally got to the new site for football purely because I want to use the cash out facility (lazy I know). If I leave it open for any length of time it consumes CPU like Godzilla and my PC just stops working. Old site is so much better.

On the new in-running would be virtually impossible and even now bets do not update so you have no idea whether a bet has matched or not. When I'm in a football match and a team scores it is extraordinary sometimes that the prices don't change - they just seem to lock - it has to be the worst designed site in history.
Report YOMOMMA April 8, 2014 2:42 PM BST
Last time I went on the new site and placed a bet it started duplicating the bet and if I remember correctly it put up £3k worth of bets of its own accord. Safe to say I never went back since. For a web based company it is shocking how bad both their websites are...

The old site is like something out of the 1980's and the new one was a total shambles last time I dared to go on it.

Just returned to betfair as I only  do Turf flat racing. I used the new site last summer because I assumed the old one would become obsolete. This afternoon I discovered that they have taken the "live video" option  of  toolbar. I went on to the old site and had no trouble getting it. In fact I had forgotten how easy it is to use and how fast it is.

I have been looking at this over the last couple of days and have given it a go today.I must agree with Longbridge in that it does address allot of the issues raised on here and first impressions are that it would suit me. Alright I don't need all the colours and stuff(you may be able to get rid of these on deeper inspection), but credit where credit is due, it shows that Betfair team are finally listening. Suggest everyone gives it a go, and then give them feedback on what is good and what isn't. I would like to think that this type of layout and set up is a goer.

Report bilbobaggins April 10, 2014 7:02 PM BST
That is such a key issue optimist - the delay before matched bets show up - I've had to wait two minutes at times naturally thinking the bet hasn't matched (and therefore you go in again). Why they cannot get this fixed is beyond me - I must have raised it at least 10 times and surely it is CRITICAL for users.
