I handicap a race with basics..... Course +1, Distance +2, BF +1, New headgear +1, Ran within 21 Days +1, Going +1, Claiming + 1, UP +0, OR drop grade +2, Never find the winner but good with the place.... Am i just feckin **** at it?? Crazy

You're just using what most other handicappers are using.  If you aren't finding winners, you're missing something.  Maybe just go with the flow and bet place.  There's a shiiteload to be won betting place.

I use ratings but for the winter, I've been handicapping all the AW horses.  Really enjoying it since 'less mechanical' than my Star Ship Enterprise dashboard.

Do a similar but you need to make notes after the race if it didn't make a difference. 

Also (and this is after corresponding with several trainers), you might consider extending the 21 day rule.  New facilities and new equipment at home is keeping horses fit off the track (this became apparent this year with so many horses that had been away for 60,70+ days winning or running really well).

Also, because of finances these days, some trainers who don't have the home facilities will lease from neighbouring trainers who need the cash flow.
