The obvious one which has been mentioned many times before is go on price, not on who you think is going to win.

As a starting point I would say whatever market you bet on, decide what the price of the runner should be in your eyes before you even look at the prices. Round the book to something like 102% and then say anytime a price crops up that is X% higher than what you think it should be then have a bet on it, regardless of whether you think it will win or not.

Man U v Sou in my eyes I think Man U is a little high, I was a bit surprised to see them over 1.5 at home. I may well be wrong but it is just my opinion.

Start with small bets and do it for a while and that should give you a bit of an idea how good your judgement/pricing skills are. At least in the mean time while you are figuring out how good you are you will be getting used to betting based on prices rather than perceived outcome.

Do:
Bet to your bankroll.  Money management is king.  Even the best strategies come unstuck by overbetting your bankroll.
Don't:
Get emotional.

Money management sounds like a plan, I could do with managing mine a lot better. With me its sheet or bust.

In all honesty though I reckon you cant make it pay on exchanges anyway and it should be treated lightly.

Proper bet size to bankroll is rule #1.  Rule #1A is knowing what to bet.  Rule #2 is knowing that small returns are OK and actually preferred over large returns.  I'm talking percentages.  Rule #3 is fully understanding that BF is a trading site, and how to use it properly. Rule #4 is knowing it's not complicated, so don't make it complicated. If there are more rules then these, well, WTF do I know.

You don't need to be a genius to understand that a strike rate of 50% winners vs 5% winners tells zero story about ones profitability.

I have to disagree with you BJT. The latter part of your statement is 100 % correct.  The fact that so many people, probably most,  still don't understand that concept  makes the former part of your statement incorrect; although genius might be too strong a term.
Report BJT October 15, 2013 3:03 AM BST
And of the people that do, how many of them are geniuses?  I know it and I certainly am not a genius.  Therefore, my statement is 100% correct.
Are you a genius?

Report Still standing October 15, 2013 3:29 AM BST
Of course not.  You don't have to be a genius, but the concept proves to be so tough for most people, maybe I, and you, and those who put the concept into practice are just a step down from genius.

in your favour. Experience will tell you when
that is.
