Be interesting to see how they enforce it. How can they stop offshore firms accepting bets from the UK?

Enforcement done through a banking system.  They may need to set up an account within the UK.  Banks are instructed to only allow payments to company XYZ to be done to that UK accounts.

Thanks Shapeshifter for the info. Have you got a weblink to that because I cannot find anything on how the UK governement plans to enforce it.

The reason the government originally said the change was necessary was to make sure UK customers were protected by regulation. The extra tax was mere a by-product. But that sky article quotes Sajid Javid....

"It is unacceptable that gambling companies can avoid UK taxes by moving offshore, and the Government is taking decisive action to ensure this can no longer happen," Economic Secretary to the Treasury Sajid Javid said.

"These reforms will ensure that remote gambling operators who have UK customers make a fair contribution to the public finances."

If the main reason is merely to impose a new tax couldnt the government have problems with EU law?

it will be illegal to accept bets without being licensed by the uk gambling commission and anyone who doesn't pay their tax will lose their license.  So obv the big companies aren't going to allow their CEOs to be dragged through the courts.

The sham regulators in gib and malta have brought this on themselves and I look forward to them all losing their jobs.

Is the same government going to do the very same thing to make their own donors avoid paying any taxes?

Hmmmmm.

frog2, no link specific but just aware through conversation with someone in banking when I asked him how any government could regulate internet business (besides simply blocking ip's).

But this is really easily to implement.

And it will be simple to implement a 'license'.

If it is all now just about Sajid Javid trying to raise extra tax it will be interesting to see if hills and co contest it on a European level given that the UK is now a mature market. At least everyone has shown their cards now.
