Betfair have allowed my account to go into the red. Has this happened to anyone else as i thought this was not possible

be more specific..were you paid out in error or due to an unexpected stewards enquiry and you withdrew your winnings immediately?
It's happened a few times, but it's always been because of the "retained commission" thing in partially settled markets.
When I needed to adjust positions to get back into positive account balance, Betfair were helpful and gave me the needed short term credit.
