I'd rather go to hell.

Me too, but the bright yellow link on the exchange is beginning to brainwash me.
Report sweetchildofmine March 6, 2013 7:26 PM GMT
its certainly irritating, its like a sunspot in the corner of your eye
Report gus March 6, 2013 8:16 PM GMT
I've never clicked it yet for fear it'll say

"Go Directly to Sportsbook."
"Do Not Pass Go"
"Do Not Collect £200." Sad

I've never clicked it either.  In fact, I've not even been on the sportsbook.

I'd love to know exactly what the thinking is behind trying to get people to stop using the exchange and use their sportsbook.

I've already advised hedge fund managers to take a good look into Betfair with a view to shorting the stock.  I think they've lost the plot.

I too am a member of this elite group of people that dare not click that big yellow button for fear of never being able to return to the exchange.

Another possible reason to sell short is the sportsbook itself. I cannot believe that it is a success, every time I look they are offering such unattractive odds that only a complete mug would take or they are offering a clear arb opportunity against the lay price on the exchange.

Their tactics on fixed odds, to me, is a right old puzzler.

Again on the subject of selling short, I don't know what proportion of turnover is attributable to Cheltenham annually but atm sub zero temps could be placing racing under threat.

hope it snows ... my secret System for backing the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup when it's snowing has a 100% record (The Thinker (1987)):

My name is Gawd and I have clicked on the bright yellow button  Sad

Yes, I entered the world of the sportsbook, I couldnt help it, it looked so inviting. I looked around, did not like what I saw there and scampered back to the safety of the exchange....not an experience I would recommend.

I don't know any hedge fund managers, but that aside I agree with TP. they've lost the plot. in trying to solve what most would now acknowledge was a genuine problem through PCs 1,2 & 3, I think BF lost focus.

if that link said "Go to worse prices", who would click it? yet that's effectively what it does say. so what is BF's strategy with it? presumably to hope that their customers are too stupid to realise. unless they're prepared to wind up the exchange, that's just not going to work - because over time the traffic can only really go one way. people can realise the prices are better on the exchange; they can't unrealise it.

and where, rarely, they're better on the sportsbook... well, those are precisely the bets all logic says BF least wants to be laying.

more than anything what BF needs atm is someone in charge who actually really understands and believes in exchange betting.

What I fail to understand is why they do this in the midst of an advertising campaign for the exchange.  A campaign that focuses on Betfair having the best prices (if you use the exchange) and their 'Cash Out' function (again, I believe this is just for the exchange).

They're attempting to persuade people to go to betfair.com and when there they get directed to a place where they can't get what's being advertised.  It's just bizarre.

I understand having a sportsbook, and think it makes a lot of sense, but not if you're going to use it to compete with your existing product.  Especially when the existing product is where there one advantage lies.

I would be surprised if they're not breaking some sort of advertising rules.
