ballabriggs you pay commission on exchange side of bet so no profit there if laying 1.69 and backing 1.72.
Plus the fact that even without commission you would need to back at £100 to make £1 green profit.
It might be a struggle to get that much on the fixed odds if you tried arbing regularly.
You not gonna be able to retire that easily old boy

Some of us effectively don't pay commission. What I can't understand is that Betfair fixed odds don't use Betfair to make sure they aren't giving away value In any case winning Betfair customers are limited or banned in the same way as traditional bookies do on fixed odds.

It is indeed a puzzler. Yesterday on another market 1.85 (to lay) played 2.0 and not so long ago 1.32 (to lay) played 1.83. It's not as if those odds were sitting there for minutes either, it was many hours. You would suppose that they would have a method to flag that up where there is volume but they don't seem to.
As a matter of course I now leave up one new site screen to toggle between fixed and exchange odds.

I wdn't put it past them that it's deliberate enticement, to root out arbers and ban them from fixed odds.
Remember that a lot of the true arbers will have massive lifetime losing balances on the exchange.

I think its a deliberate policy to get people to pay more attention to the fixed odds prices. If nothing is ever better people will spend less time on the site and write it off. Its not as if you'll be able to place a large bet on it, unless you are a category A punter who it's good to keep sweet, so no real damge done. I think it's important myself, as long as you can manage the turnover.
