It will be fascinating to see how the recent acquisition changes the IR landscape

We now have a bookmaker with thousands of shops, that is present in almost every city and town in the UK, that should soon have the capability to offer IR in those shops to their own exchange
If they manage it properly, they could transform the betting industry, and shops as we know them.

A massive opportunity that their competitors do not currently have

they can install few customized computers in their shops and offer the exchange in a way most punters will understand. many punters will understand the benefit after a few weeks, me thinks

i said something like that about 2 years ago and got shot down for it being a silly suggestion .

what i said was something like this

if punters in betting shops could bet in-running using pics with a delay of no more than 1 second , it might catch on , and bring new younger punters to horse racing as betting in running is much more fun than just backing pre-race .
it could be incorporated into the fobts so they can watch the race and bet on the horses by touching the screen , with the betting shops either making/changing the price as the race runs , or scrapping prices from betfair and undercutting it .
possibly only allowing betting upto the last furlong .

if it was a free service provided by ladbrokes would they need a trading license then.i think earlier this year the bookies could apply to the gc for a free trading license for their use only ie to be able to lay a bet off not certain thoughConfusedConfused

a more likely development will be the ladbrokes shops offering punters the chance to lay horses, they'll phrase it differently.

assume they're offering 5/1 for a horse to win, if its backed they could automatically stick up 6/1 to lay on betduck after the bets taken.  in the shop they could then have a screen next to it saying 1/7 for it to lose, if a punter fancies that as a fair price and takes it, then they could leave a bet up on the exchange to lay for 6/1.

loads of favorites go down everyday so I doubt it'll be a hard sell to new punters.

in running, itd be interesting if they did the above with sports to boost liquidity, horse racing would be a nightmare with the pace of changes unless they could find a way to let people bet directly into the exchanges through terminals.

knowing ladbrokes I doubt they're that keen to promote horse racing, every bookmaker would scrap all but around 8 meetings in the year given the chance.

They seem to be thinking of keeping the Betduck name how big a mistake would that be ?

They only want people using the FOBTs in the shops.

I think this kind of development is relatively unlikely. In-running turnover is much less than pre-off and it's hard to see a whole bunch of "seats" in high street location paying for themselves in comm alone.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of attitude Laddies takes to winners on the exchange. For all their faults BF have never banned anyone for winning whereas Laddies don't even wait for you to win - they ban you if they think you might. It's hard to see the new ownership being friendlier to winners than BF - I would expect the reverse.

Aye robot - you may want to review some posts by formites regarding their accounts being limited on BF's fixed odds platform before making those comparisons.

I take your point - but my main point is that Laddies are likely to be worse. Removing the most effective players from the exchange and "house playing" would give greater margins and still allow the average punter the environment he wants. It wouldn't be a "true" exchange but not many people will understand the difference and it's not really a true exchange anyway.

Maybe rcing is a visionary?

The threat to the shops is any restriction on the FOBTs. The way for a book to win on racing is to turn the horses into a FOBT--to be able to offer negative expectation bets scraped off the exchange and instantaneously laid back w/out delay of time. Put the two together and you have their fallback strategy for the shops.

Most people will accept that betting on something actually happening i.e. a horse race is more exciting than betting on the roll of a machine. It's also more tempting in that it flatters the punter he can win thru' skill.

What they really need is a series of gut 3f races for horses rated under 60, say six or seven in a race, going every ten mins. or so. I can see this (apart from the top table) as the future of horseracing.

Yeah! Betfair the friendlies company in the world. Betfair Aye Robot are not banning accounts but their 1500 employees army will squeeze everything they can from us. And trust me, the very big fan of betfair is saying that. Many of us dont realize yet that many has changed in the ownership and behind the Betfair name are different management team.

Shops just a front for FOBT's....they are making millions and whilst would be a lovely idea...zero point in bringing in exchange betting into shops under any guise....laddies have bought technology in this takeover in a bid to improve their output via the website which compared to others is rank at best...

The average shop punter will not understand 'in-running' in relation to value.  A team up 1-0 with 15 minutes left in a football match will be offered at 1.11 and they will have a net the size of Manchester of shop players chasing previous losses.

I can only imagine the atmosphere as one European worker sits at a terminal with three of his friends watching the screens with no understanding of horse racing as the jockey gives the fave a breather 6 furlongs out before the charge and the money going on the 'pace maker'.

They will have to factor in the cost of at least an "Exchange Terminal" being dismantled per week.

Children and families will go hungry.

some can see a vision - others cant see beyond the Betting shop/FOBT current position

imagine 4G mobile devices & technology beyond 4G
imagine a wifi network locking into only your site
imagine the footfall into that environment (particularly from the age group that racing cannot attract)

imagine the marketing opportunity and other spin offs
imagine the liquidity/revenue growth into the exchange

Trading room players will 'jump on' virtually immediately - giving a stimulous for continual growth.
They could capture over 90% of the 'in running' business, in a very short space of time.

Only thing I can see stopping them is another merger ........mmmmmmmmm !!

Either way the playing field is about to change significantly

If they could get exclusive pics to their site via 4G that would capture all the in running betting.

Have you been in a LBO lately? Laddies would be mad to bother with any sort of shop changes. Shop customers have never been as clueless are they are these days, anyone who knows their stuff has long been chased away by stingy limits.

I never go in the shops, but yes, agreed, it does look like a HUGE opportunity to drag betting shops by the scruff of their neck into the 21st century, loads of potential if it's done cleverly.

doesn't need to be "exclusive" but could be quicker than another established exchange can provide

Trevh says: I never go in the shops......

Conversely, how many in the shops use exchanges?  Remember how long it took for BF to ramp up their 'users'.  What sort of 'long term' conversion would their be?  I think they will present it like a FOBT with more pictures in the shops (games in Japan in the morning, lower league euro leagues....)

At the speed that most bookmaker staff operate at , trying to place an in running bet would mean you would be betting
after the finish to place a bet before the off when all the customers are placing IR bets and getting hacked off.

Picture an FOBT approach to it.  Now picture the carnage as someone puts £50 on a 1.10 shot in a horse race and it gets turned over at the line.  Stools will fly everywhere....

I used to have a manufacturer I would visit in Kentish Town.  I used to go in the Tote to see any races when I had a bet on.  There was this Greek guy who had an opinion on every race.  His strike rate was "0".

Many a time I would be waiting for my race and he would then start with his 'in depth knowledge' to anyone that would listen.  I would calmly go out....call betfair....and lay it for a pint or two. Happy
