GamCare please.

Donations can be made by clicking the 'Donate' link on the GamCare website and appear to then be placed via the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). Payment can be made by any accepted payment method of your choice. The accepted payment methods seem to be limited to PayPal & debit/credit cards.

All donations appear to be subject to a 5% deduction by the CAF to cover their administration fees. Whilst such deductions appear to be fairly common nowadays, I am aware that some people hold particularly strong objections to such fees being applied. If that includes you, then please feel free to donate to any alternative charity of your choice that doesn't apply such deductions.

I was aware that GamCare receives the majority of it's funding indirectly from the gambling industry. That doesn't, in my opinion, equate to it being a scam organisation.

Based on the little research I have conducted, it appears to offer services that have been of real benefit to a significant number of problem gamblers.

If you can supply any additional information that supports the view that GamCare is a scam organisation or is otherwise unworthy of receiving personal donations, I would certainly be interested in reviewing any such information.

I am not particularly familiar with such puzzles. I came up with the the answer shortly after reading TheInvestor's 00:13 post.

Earlier in the day I had previously noticed a pattern involving the later digits being related to multiples of earlier digits in some of the numbers. I had also considered the possibility of letters and their place in the alphabet being involved in the solution but I didn't piece the parts together at that stage. I was thrown off in part by 10171170 (which turns out to be John Quincy Adams). I then went off on a wild goose chase involving multiples of binary numbers and such like for an hour or two.   

After reading the 00:13 post, I went back to basics and wrote down various possible combinations of letters that matched the digits. As a result of seeing in particular GW, and with the recent US election, I then considered former US Presidents/candidates. I initially thought of George W Bush as opposed George Washington but after reviewing a list of previous presidents it all pieced together.

If the applicable numbers had been separated by commas, the answer would almost certainly have been solved by someone within minutes but that wouldn't have been much fun.

Look I really don't know, just enquiring really as I was surprised to learn it was even a charity, but thinking about it more it shouldn't have surprised me.

My inclination that there is a bit more to it than its purported agenda comes from these sort of 'newspeak soundbites' and euphamisms:
"GamCare receives the majority of it's funding indirectly from the gambling industry"

indirectly ? well it was my understanding there is nothing indirect about it. To obtain
a gambling licence in the UK, a company has to demonstrate that it takes measures to help
'problem' gamblers.
To tick this box, and demonstrate its a responsible company, it pays money to gamcare, uses its logo etc. and thus fulfills the criteria of the gambling act.


The "indirectly" word is also used in wikipedia, so probably sources from the PR dept.

So if bad blokes, paddy dower et al don't directly pay gamcare, I'd love to know who the intermediary is and WHY ?



don't let me put you off, I haven't any factual knowledge, just assumed based on a ( probably faulty ) bullcrap detector.

Thanks for the follow-up information.

It does state on the GamCare website that the majority of their funds are donated indirectly by the gambling industry within a framework determined by the Gambling Commission.

I don't personally regard that as cause for concern in itself but I can understand why others may be more cynical. I would certainly share the cynicism with regard to some other organisations that are funded by the gambling industry.

If TheInvestor has any concerns with regard to making a donation to GamCare, I would be happy for him to instead donate to any other charity of his choice.

I have no idea what the cause for suspicion is here.

The bookies have to make a (relatively tiny) contribution to GamCare - and this contribution ends up being larger than the sum of the voluntary contributions it receives from other sources (a charity that helps problem gamblers is, unsurprisingly, not the first place most people turn when they want to be philanthropic), but I don't think there is any reason to suspect that GamCare is doing anything other than what it professes to.
