Hello there Catflaqpo. I think it depends on your definition of planet when you say "Nothing we can do can hurt or destroy the planet." certainly in respect of the hurt part.
If you perceive the planet as a big ball of rock with a liquidy centre (like a lindt ball) then I suppose there is some validity to the claim that you can't hurt it, but if you perceive the planet (in earth's case) as an entity that encompasses all living organisms then I believe there is plenty we can do to hurt it. |

U.A., I mean the latter but the planet, in geological timescales, sees species come and go all the time. When we say harm the planet we actually mean make it less suitable for us but in fact the planet will remain teeming with life even if we disrupt things to the extent that we die out.

Life doesn't have to completely die out though for something to experience "hurt". If I fall over and bang my knee i may well hurt myself even though the accident will make no difference to my overall longevity.

Point taken, I think the term "hurt" is too vague here

Some russians at one point had a plan to let off a collosal nuke basically filling a cargo ship designed to put so much nasty stuff into the atmosphere (never mind the immediate local effect) that it'd kill off pretty much all complex life. Apparenly if communism fell it would be such a disaster that the planet should not go on without it ... nutters. Thankfully the idea was shelved.
Was a worse idea than "beta" THAT bad. |
