not good, not gunna say how much but 3 years online has not been profitable, hasnt broken me  but still a bit of a dissapointment, spose you could say nothing ventured nothing gained, the question is to keep doing it or pull back or out, still say though that have learnt a lot , a lot more than i knew 3 years ago but the question remains , would it be any different in 3 years time or same old same old............football frustrates me but some of the other sports as in rugby and league and some head to head options still probably offer good value.

i seriously wonder if ppl gamble not as much through addiction to gambling but more sorta hooked on the internet , ive been online now about 8 years and most of its getting pretty boring now gambling sites are one of the few places i bother with now, im sure a lot of others come to betfair etc just to kill time.

You are like a lot of other people on here, its a mugs game unless you put in hard work. Using this site or other gambling sites to pass time is just going to eat away at your finances.

yes but after 3 years you must have learnt something , quick games mean quick loss of funds , been there done that........... in all honesty i still think you can make profit but you gotta have a system, the key is discipline, thats what probably gets most of us.

i would stress i do have a stratagy for football.........its kind of based on the fact that when 2 teams play a game the aim is to score goals , if they aint capable then what can anybody else do about it.

I think maybe that's where you're going wrong, the last couple of months have shown that a lot of the time teams are aiming to not let goals in.

mikenz, its a brave and sensible man who knows when its time to call it a day. You need to look at your losses and consider whether it is worth losing £10 or £20 a week on a hobby or whether you could be spending the money on something else. When you look at losses it can be tempting to try and win money back, which is often fatal.

It is also a fallacy that you just need to put more hard work in - the markets on here are extremely efficient and its very difficult to find an edge.

You make an interesting point about quick games meaning quick loss of funds. Remember the old days when you would place your bets on 3pm kick offs and you were done for the day at quarter to five? Nowadays you can start betting on football at 12:45 and still be placing bets at 2am! That is where chasing comes in and the real problems begin.

Very well put, Marxist.

I shall echo his statements. Especially the 'hard work' fallacy.

It depends why you bet. If it's for fun and you are not losing more than you can afford then carry on. Otherwise stopping my be the way to go.

Especially the 'hard work' fallacy.

You work hard to find edges then you work hard at how best to exploit them and getting as much money through those markets as possible.
Lazy punters are usually the ones who lose most money.

The hard work fallacy.
Is that the same as " the harder I work the luckier I get " one ?
Report Marxist-Leninist • July 12, 2012 2:50 PM BST
I actually said "It is also a fallacy that you just need to put more hard work in - the markets on here are extremely efficient and its very difficult to find an edge."

The first few years of gambling are rarely profitable for anyone but the key is you should be constantly learning and improving. You have to see tangible proof that you have improved ie: rate of loss is improving dramatically and after 3 years should be close to break even on year or small loss ie less than 2% to stake.

If that is the case then you have hope and you can continue to build on your strategies to develop your edge to a point where you are profitable else you have the choice to pack it in or accept you enjoy betting but are gonna lose money doing so.

Marxist - Leninist
I'm afraid your statement that the markets on here are extremely efficient might be true in a static sense, but it is in the getting to this efficient state where the betting opportunities arise.
When markets are being formed over time they move in various directions and the "smarties" on here can seemingly identify if and when they get out of line and exploit such variances to their benefit.
It would appear that most of the really big winners on BF have written algorithms that they have botted up, to exploit the very extreme and  very emotional based swings in prices you see all the time in the IP markets. They only last for very brief period of times and are virtually impossible to exploit without bots.
The position type punters who win on here are doing it through very hard work, involving strenuous research and some angle of interpretation that is not commonly known to others.

Simple fact is the time you spend, you sorta come here anytime of the day and there is a game on, i kinda worked on the theory that you say make x amount perday but betting on goals is probably same as a goalkeepers average in a shootout, if he goes left the ball goes right or vice versa, and everynow and then you actually save one, just the same as goals really, noone reallyknows whats gunna happen.

Just at present i think even if i was winning i still would get a bit bored with it, there are other things than being stuck on a computer, and now with mobile phones you can spend all ya time on it, you just need to pull back now and then i reckon.
