I've been betting for 8 years now. I reached my lowest point about 7 months ago and was probably -£8,000 overall. I was contemplating quitting as I wasnt enjoying it anymore and it was taking over my life.

Since then, I have gone on quite a hot streak and have made it all back - mainly due to only focusing on the sports I am actually good at betting on, lots of trading out and not getting too greedy. This has been really hard work and involved a fair amount of luck.

Should I stop or not? Help please

Quit whilst the luck was on your side

Just stick to Cricket, that seems to be where you're making money

Don't be put off by having a fair amount of luck.
All gamblers must have their fair share of that over a long period of time.
You seem to know your cricket, so why not just cut back to that, rather than quit everything.
Unless of course you can't really afford to gamble/risk anything, and the recovery of your losses has been a godsend.
Then by all means quit.

continue betting on cricket

quit mug punting on anything that moves, but you know this

In gambling as in life luck plays a large role in success and failure, anyone who claims otherwise is kidding themselves

come back next ipl by the look of it.  or just do the domestic t20, world t20 in a few months.  Have a break, come back refreshed and stick to the cricket.

important question is how the game by game PnL and bet by PnL of the cricket....

if it is 6000 £10 bets and you made £6K in lots of small wins continue
if it is 15 bets and you made 5K on a miricle quite
Report askari1 • June 7, 2012 9:57 PM BST
I think you are asking permission to quit and should do so.

There are more things to think about than your final PnL. Think of the time invested in betting, the hassle (if any) getting on, what you lose not spending more time w/ friends and family and the emotional cost of the swings in results.

If you have an almost immediate selection and bet placement process for cricket, continue for minuscule amounts and try to work out statistically whether you win through skill. Otherwise, I'd quit.

wheresthegreenat, if you can't say exactly why you made the money i.e. you can't define what your edge is, then probably best to quit.

Green, could you be more specific about what you meant by 'a fair amount of luck'?  Do you mean you were staking large sums and everything could easily have gone very wrong, or do you just mean you profited from a few unexpected results going your way?

Also, how much have you enjoyed the last few months of making it back?
Report takethestand • June 8, 2012 11:06 AM BST
Just make sure you never go back to -8k.

withdraw 6k, put a limit on deposits and plays with whats left.  if your good and lucky it will last a while mabey even decent profit.  if you blow it quick then quitting is a good option
