What will have changed do you think?

And what would you do to improve things?

I reckon high street bookies wont exist for a start..

You'll need to be a certified card-carrying member of Gamblers Anonymous with at least 3 suicide attempts to get a bet on with any of the corporate bookmakers. Betfair will gradually diminish as all the professional punters wipe each other out. Recreational punters will still have the tote ... either that or the pokie machines. Horse racing will be almost non-existent and sports like cricket, football etc will be so corrupt that no one will bet on them any more.

China will have liberalised its gambling laws and Betfair will be purchased for a knock down price and swallowed up the now dominant Chinese exchange.  The UK will reintroduce a turnover tax once it realises it can't compete with the Chinese.  Turnover on English Premiership games will be £1 billion on the new Chinese site.  Horse racing turnover will be confined to OAPS betting remotely from their sheltered accomodation, and limited to between £1 and a tenner.  The High Street will be automated football coupons and bandit machines only.

The global betting market is there for the Chinese to dominate.  All they need to do is realise it.

All sports will be replaced by virtual sports. All exchanges and bookies will be bassed in Antartica due to legal/tax reasons, so the biggest money-maker by far will be virtual penguin racing.

By this stage Paulme (who will have had to change his username another 18264 times) will know everybody's age and have used this information to create a massive betting edge and will become the biggest player out there. Gambling in the UK will only be allowed in the square mile, so Feck will buy a pin-striped suit and move down that way. And somehow on 1 Jan 2040 Tobermory will ttt this thread back up to the top for everyone to read again.

Nothing will change in essence.
The smarties will win, and the mugs will lose.
Same old.

Gambling is big business, but is a parasite on mainly 19th and 20th century sports.

By 2040, the sporting landscape itself will have changed, with new sports tailored with the betting markets in part in mind.

Betfair itself will be dead and long gone.  Its too bloated already, and each thrust for "growth" they introduce (LMAX, the new crack trading team's sportsbook etc) is one fine mess after another.

Zynga will have diversified from 95% facebook towards crushing Betfair in about 5 years time from now.

When you sign on the dole you will be encouraged to play double or quits on a govt run FOBT.

Betting will be replaced by space betting using futuristic betting slips. We will all wear hats with all wires coming out and think our bets into the heads of traders who will think back restricted stakes.
