I am aware of Harville's work in this area, but find I am uncomfortable with the figures.
e.g 4/1defeats 9/1=39/1
whilst 9/1 defeats 4/1 = 44/1
seems the difference in 'real' terms is not great enough.
Does anyone have a table that skews the weight more in the favour of the more popular result?
or am i delusional thinking the pure maths is not the way to go?

If you can't get terminology "right" then you have no idea what you are doing!

Great answer DFC but I think ziggy has found what he's looking for on the Aussie forum.
