A few weeks ago I was trying to find software that records Betfair horse racing markets and I couldn't find any so I wrote my own. It's a bit rough around the edges because I made it with the sole intention of using it myself, but I'm now thinking whether it would be a good idea to release it.

Do you think there would be interest in something like this? If so, what are the features you would expect from such software?

Unless you want to pay a fortune to Betfair for data-rights then you are onto a non-starter.
That's the reason why you are having trouble finding similar software.

Google fracsoft PhGuy.

Why would I have to pay a fortune? The software collects data which are freely available to anyone with a Betfair account. I will not distribute any data, the user will have to collect them using the software.

I already know about Fracsoft, but they're too expensive for the research I set out to do.

I don't even understand how it's possible that Betfair owns this data. If I recorded change in the price of a pint of milk with various supermarket chains, I could do what I want with the data I collect, so how is collecting data from betfair different.

I know it is different, I just don't understand why.

The price ticket above a litre of milk in betfair's supermarket would read

0.80 0.792 0.794 0.792 o.796 0.801 0.803 0.80 0.792 0.794 0.792 o.796 0.801 0.80 0.80 0.792 0.794 0.792 o.796 0.801 0.803,

someone would be employed full time to change the ticket every 2 milliseconds, prices would be rounded up to the nearest penny and the odd punter would be charged 10K for a litre.

We had software that did exactly this but Betfair told us we could no longer sell it. I suggest you contact BDP first before you consider developing anything like this.

Proform probably has everything you need already so google that product.
Report PhGuy • April 17, 2012 10:31 PM BST
BetAngel, how come they told you to stop selling it? You weren't selling any data, right? You were only selling software to record data to which the user already has access to. I don't think they have the right to stop you selling it.

Don't betfair already provide historical data free for anyone over 100 betfair points?

You don't need to do the recording, just load their historic data and write your own analyser tool.
Report TheInvestor2 • April 18, 2012 2:06 AM BST
Free Betfair historical data is not timestamped. Better than nothing, but fracsoft exists for a reason.

Hmm

on the bdp forum/site there are examples of how to link spreadsheets to the api.

so, how can they stop you harvesting data?
and how can they stop you selling a api thingy that connects to your own spreadsheets?

surely they would want you to have the data so that more systems are created and more punters use betfair?

answer that one !

There are so many people collecting data for research that it's no wonder the site crashes on busy days. The majority of requests the server's processing probably originate from people who aren't even betting or middlemen traders adding little in the way of real liquidity. The obvious solution would be for betfair to collect the data themselves and make it free to all. Instead their greed dictates they sell it through fracsoft and as a result everybody just continues collecting their own data. Either they're making a fortune from the fracsoft data (such that they couldn't care less about site crashes) or they're total loons.

Historical Data License

Any distribution of Historical Betfair Data or the tools to help build a Historical Betfair Database requires a Historical Data License. ‘Historical Betfair Data’ means any Betfair trading data (such as prices and volume) that relates to a settled market. This data can be generated and distributed in a number of ways. Two examples are:
1.Allowing users to archive data from live before a market is settled so that the data can be interrogated in a database after settlement
2.Making data files available after a market has been settled

Providing live market information such as an advanced version of our Market Info graph (accessed by clicking on a selection name on our website) which is not available for interrogation after settlement is not regarded as Historical Betfair Data and comes under the terms of the Software Vendor license.

Oh, thanks Investor, I didn't realise (I don't have 100 points yet.)

In that case Fracsoft look the way to go.
