I have been betting on football for the past few years but never been able to make consistent profits. My real love is for horse racing and have been to Cheltenham for the last 2 festivals. I have decided that i now want to focus on horse racing and i want to learn as much as i can to try and maximise my chances of winning.

I have a basic understanding of racing but i want to learn more. Can any of you recommend any websites/books for a novice punter like myself. I.e A beginners guide to horse racing.

I have also heard of people keeping spreadsheets with lots of different data. What kind of data would that be and is there any example spreadsheets that i could download?

What would you recommend for me as a novice punter?

Thanks

Less is more.  3 meetings means over 20 races a day so be selective on your races. Sometimes just watching a race can flag a bet for the future.

Value.  Odds on in a horse race is the same as backing odds on when a team is the visitor.

Use an alert system that will email you when you have a runner marked up.  But put notes and reasons and criteria.  i.e. "Came in 5th but was running well till 2 furlongs out over 22 furlongs.  Back at 20 furlongs or less or better going"

Do your research without taking the odds into account till you have the selection.  The odds WILL influence you. You'll find yourself with a clear winner and be pleasantly surprised to find it at 12/1 making it a nice ew play.

Value.

taking a break. Goin away on holiday 4 chelenham festival and will have a few bets and just chill out. Im going 2 come back with a decent bank. At least £500 and adopt a new strategy I have been studying. I just need a break from it at the moment. I will be back 2 months from now. I wish u all the best of luck in the meantime

Not sure if this is what you want and you may already know about it!

Check out Adrian Massey's site which has masses of info (not about specific runners
but success rates of given 1st, 2nd and 3rd favs).

I know he has scaled down his input but the historical data is worth a look.

backing/laying favs in certain races has always seemed too much of a broad-brush approach to me...you seriously find that a profitable angle, aunty?

I don't think there's any alternative to considering a minimum of five or six factors (and possibly a maximum of a hundred), figuring out how they all fit together, generating a tissue and betting when there's value.

If there is an alternative, it's arbing but you need a different set of skills to get on.

It always seems to be the case that there are more programmers and statisticians than form students making a living at the game.
