...the feeling as your 10/1 shot is battling for the lead hurtling towards the last........

...the elation of the overs backers as Phil Jones somehow shuffles one into his own net with seconds left......

Is life passing the pros by?

Different mindset to the regular punter. More like doing a job.
What you're saying is a bit like suggesting that pro footballers don't enjoy the game as much as amateurs.  Probably true but a nice way to make your living all the same.

You might lots of pro's dont have 100% discipline, and allow a few 'social' or speculative bets to creep into thier betting.....

I am sure on those they have a peronsal feeling....

and with a bot - you certainly enjoy the personal feeling you are beating the martket.... but that is not a race by race feeling that is a month by month feeling, and as such is not so volaitile as 10/1 coming to the 30th of the month

well, I'm just taking my newest Bot out for it's first outing and using £8 stakes, because i'm still not 100% confident it's accident proof and so far it's done this:

on a personal level I would prefer to take a nearly loss proof 3-5 quid out of a market any day of the week. Just think of all the in play markets a day. It depends as some of the lads have said if your in to make a living as some do or if your in it to just gamble and have fun.

Sacrifice a few of the "bags of chips" for the odd "fillet steak and all the trimmings please garcon"  - it tastes good.

the 'all or nothing' approach won't be feeding that adrenalin buzz for very long

£34.91 squids a day = £12,567.60 squids p.a. (allowing for an excess of Holy Days).

so, if like me you're reasonably low-maintenance, i think that's quite adrenelin buzzing, in  a low-key sort of way .... especially when you know the guessers will keep on coming back for as long as Humans keep on guessing Happy

or, for the more cerebral:

"A purpose wedded to plans may easily suffer shipwreck; but an unfettered purpose that moulds circumstances as they arise, masters us, and is terrible...  The projector of plots is but a miserable gambler and votary of chances. Of a far higher quality is the will that can subdue itself to wait, and lay no petty traps for opportunity."

George Meredith, Evan Harrington, (1861)

i've been roundly criticised for for posting that quote before, but that  doesn't make any it less true (imo)

I used to be a buzz bettor when I started out, but I desperately hated losing so started to look for a routine of methodicalness and security.

I want a winning month every month and achieving that is what now gives me a buzz and a sense of pride in a job well done. My heart still misses the thrill of recreational gambling though, but my head won't let me do it as I know I have no edge in predicting outcomes and am not prepared to lose money. :)
Report DivideByZeroError • January 5, 2012 10:19 PM GMT
Botting doesn't bring me the adrenalin rush you describe but a real satisfaction of building something which consistently makes a profit. While my bot is slaving away I can have my fun in other ways such as having dinner with friends or taking part in sports (rather than gambling on them).

Scoring £50 by backing the winner in an FA cup final might be fun but I would get more satisfaction of building a bot that could scrape £1 risk-free profit from a third division Romanian football match where I couldn't even pronounce the team names let alone take a view on the winner.
Report Johnny The Guesser • January 5, 2012 11:03 PM GMT
Are some of you for real? - "building a bot to scrape a pound"!!

Why not go round looking for pennies in the street?

Loosen up - live a little. I bet some of you guys never have a  drink because "it's a waste of money"

Try throwing a few £20s at live football or the big race on Saturday - they are 100% books - you shouldn't go far wrong and you might even up on your feet shouting at the tele!

I feel sorry for people who dont gamble - they are missing so much.
Report Lori • January 5, 2012 11:14 PM GMT
If you want to add to your list of things you consider an insult, you could add that I find the first 2-3 rounds of big knockout events far more interesting than the finals.

I'm none of the people you address in the thread title but the analysis of a tournament in almost any sport is more interesting until the final - by which point there are fewer mistakes made in the market and fewer matches to analyse.
Report askari1 • January 6, 2012 12:31 AM GMT
I doubt there are many people who purely arb or purely scalp. Some might start off like that, then acquire subject knowledge and begin to make a bit more by working an edge that goes slightly beyond the initial description.

A winner's satisfaction will come from winning long-term. I'm a small winner--I give up some enjoyment to win and would win more if I were more ruthless in applying the most successful elements of my strategy. In my case, I'd have to get on more at good prices and have a larger bank to deploy my variance--both things wh/ need more friends/colleagues/placers, rather than any change to my selection or punting methods.
Report askari1 • January 6, 2012 12:31 AM GMT

most people don't go to work to have 'fun' -

do arbers seriously make any money these days ?
Report DivideByZeroError • January 6, 2012 8:45 AM GMT
True it is much harder to make money arbing than it once was.

Johnny The Guesser - yes I like to live a little, that's why I'm not stuck in front of my PC all day, the bot does the hard work so I can go to the pub (and yes, have a drink). And the satisfaction of scraping a quid from a random event I know nothing about comes from the fact I know that I can repeat that many times, whereas picking the winner of a match this time doesn't mean I'll be able to pick another winner time and time again.

Instead of screaming at a football team on the tv I would get a similar rush competing at sports, playing poker or even sat in front of my PS3.
