yesterday's results. think i'm going to rule out horse racing in the future. i also might want to lower my stakes a bit and profits a bit as i'm well in front of schedule, which indicates that i'm taking a bit too much risk. the idea of the whole plan is thinking long term, winning a lot of very small profits with minimal risk (1-2%) bets. i notice that i don't mind losing 10 or 20 of my bank, but i feel a certain urge when i just lost 4% of my initial bank as it can easily destroy today's profit.

but so far: 61 hits in 68 bets

i did, but i still find myself chasing. i lost 40 on espanyol yesterday. they were 0-1 up and cought a red card, then 2 goals in the last 10 minutes, so i guess you can call that a bad beat. the idea is to gradually recover the loss in a couple of steps, or even just leave it like that because i'm ahead of schedule. then i saw valencia was up 1-0 against sevilla. i watched the match for 20 minutes, checked the stats etc. sevilla had 1 shot on target in about 60 minutes, so i layed them to win 40 on valencia and draw with a big liability. turned out fine, but i realize that these bets can destroy my bank, when in fact i could have left the loss like that and claim my daily profit..

i'm not sure how to arm myself against such weaknesses.. i noticed that i can easily transfer money (i think even without a fee) in and out of betfair, so maybe i should just allow myself a smaller percentage of my bank to play with to set a maximum liability. do you think that's a good idea?

Nicholas, open an electronic money account (Neteller, MoneyBooker etc.) and keep most of your money in there. Transfer a little money to Betfair every day, and use the Daily Deposit Limit to control exactly how much you can move across over a 24 hour period. That way, you're very limited in how much you can lose in one day.  And if you've had a good session and want to protect some of your profits, you can move that money out instantly, and the most you can then lose that day is whatever you have left in your Betfair account.

sounds wonderful Cooee! i was already thinking of something like that. the only difficulty is that i only want to use 1 or 2% of my bank per market. but most of the time i play on multiple markets at the same time. maybe i can transfer 5% of my bank and set my own rules only to use about a fifth of that per market.

i also think that sometimes opportunities show up that entitle a bigger liability. for instance a 1.01 in the last 30 seconds of a basketball game can easily make some "riskfree" extra bucks, of course only using a small percentage of the bank, yet an amount bigger than 1 or 2% ..

Yeah, that is the problem with using Neteller/Moneybooker. You are a little restricted in what you can do per day, so it won't suit everybody.   But if you can find a way of making it work with your system, it's a good way of cutting out those 'AAAGGHHH Why did I throw away so much money on that!' moments.

Well when I first met Paul I spent many hours writing him posts telling him what he needed to do to learn something about betting - I even gave him a couple of precise angles to explore, angles which I'm still using almost daily to make money with. What became apparent, though, was that he didn't actually have any interest in working and developing as a bettor - indeed, his posts the other day to Contrarian show that his knowledge of betting systems hasn't moved on one inch in several months.

When I tired of answering his many questions (most of which were very irrelevant to his development, and along the lines of 'are you a pro', 'what money do you make', 'can you give me tips' etc.), he started getting very aggressive with me and sent me a torrent of abusive pms. He also treated many other posters with similar contempt, and is still given to being very abusive to those he doesn't think are playing ball with him. There's nothing clever about the way he treats other people, and I've decided to prove that by being as least as nasty to him as he has been to others on Betfair.

could have been a good day, but now it's just.. an okay day
it wasn't until a couple of minutes before espanyol scored the equilizer that i decided to go a little in the red on the draw. after all espanyol was pressed on their own half almost all the time. same story with udinese.. unexpected equilizer before ht, then they win 4-1. managed to gradually recover in 3 bets.

after all i'm satisfied with this week's results.

I'm not totally sure of what you do, but I get the impression that you stake a lot to win a little and one bet gone wrong will wipe out a considerable chunk of the bank?

well, on basketball i just stake a little bit depending on the risk, mostly between 2 and 20 €
for instance last night:

on football i just look for opportunities. for instance benfica yesterday 0-1 up against leiria. the number 2 vs number 15. leiria scores 14 goals in 14 matches. it's pretty obvious that benfica will win, worst case scenario a draw. so i layed leiria for 4€ and a 55€ liability (which is actually a larger profit then i'm currently aiming for) and backed benfica for 3€ leaving a little green on the draw and above 4€ on benfica. they win 0-4.

even if i lose the 55€ then i can just look at my spreadheet and decide in how many steps i want to recover the loss (an idea from egner). for instace if i take 6 steps i will have to win a little bit more per market than i normally have to win. the other option, and that's the luxury i have at the moment, is just leaving the loss like that, because i'm well ahead of schedule, and just continue.

other things i do.. sometimes i lay crazy scores in the correct score market at higher stakes, but only once in a while to minimize the risk. i get some extra money staking a little bit more on a 1.01, mostly at the end of basketball games or football at 3-0, things like that.



the idea is to use as little of the bank as possible to make a minimal profit. i want to make a lot of minimal profits long term (5000 markets in about 6 months) turning the 1k starting bank into 30k. my spreadsheet starts like this:

after 1800 markets the profit per market reaches 6€ with a bank of 6k. after that i lower the risk with a cap of 5€ for the next 1200 markets, leaving a risk between 0,04 and 0,05% per market. my daily targets will never be more than 200€ and at the moment my daily target is around 25€. for instance when my daily target will be 100€ my bank will be at 10k, and when my daily target reaches 200€ my bank will be over 20k.

i aim at minimum 20 markets per day which means that i have to make 10€ per market with a 20k bank to make my 200€ daily profit..

certainly sounds achievable to me. whether i have the discipline to do it, i hope so.. but using spreadsheets like this helps to keep eye on the end target. however, it's still very early to say i'm doing well. i'm at 126 markets of 5000, with a surplus of 315€. numbers suggest that i slow down now and minimize the risk, stick more to the spreadsheet.

rough day i must say.. was watching some basketball this morning and decided to jump on the talk n text v petron blaze boosters game. talk n text was going pretty smooth so i backed the favourites for about 2%. when they got 20 points ahead in the second quarter i decided to risk a little more. it all went so easy and they were heading for a massive win i thought. liability was 250€. at that point i was 320€ ahead of schedule, if that can justify my bet in any way. however, they must be informed of my bets, 'cause suddenly pertron blaze came back by 10 points in a couple of minutes. the second half was mostly dominated by talk n text keeping petron blaze at 7 or 8 points, so i still had a good feeling. till it went wrong in the last two minutes and they got ahead and won by 2 points. talk n text got 2 more 3 point shots in the last 12 seconds, but it didn't matter.

that said i stopped for a minute and decided to just keep going and to just be happy with the 70€ surplus i still had. to be sure of not doing anything too stupid i withdrew my starting bank of 1000K. i was going well and my p/l looked like this at 21:40

not too bad after the loss at midday. then suddenly i saw my chance. braga was at 1-1 against beira-mar. beira mar had won 4 games in 14 and scored 12 times, including the goal against braga. i layed them for as much as i could, leaving about 25€ in my account to put on braga to win about 140€. only a couple of minutes later they scored and i layed off to win 129€ in the end. i know that it was stupid, but i felt like beira mar had almost no chance of winning and i had to take this opportunity.

closing my first losing they at -38€, not too bad taking everything into account. i withdrew 208€ to my neteller account to leave 200€ in my bank to play with. of course my bank stays the same, just limiting myself to sticking to the spreadsheet to remain focussed. i had luck on my side in the end, so i hope to avoid these kind of situations and learn from my mistakes in the future.

Yeah, steer clear of those bets you know full well are risky. They often work out and make you feel good, but at some point they'll come back and smack you around the head. Successful long-term betting is about never putting too much at risk. Until getting to that point, everything you make is just a higher potential losing day waiting to happen.

not necessarily. i back, i lay, i trade, but try to keep the stake as low as possible. sometimes i stake a little more but as you can see from yesterday's results that doesn't always turn out well. you can afford to only use a minimum of your bank, because the target is only 0,1% or less. so you can easily play with 1% of your bank. you probably won't find it interesting winning 1 or 2€ per bet, but it adds up to, like you say, win big long term. cheers mate!

In your above explanation you said you layed Leiria after they went 0-1 down against Benfica. You layed them at 55 for $4, therefore your liability was $216 not $55 as you stated.
Did I miss something?

yes trader you're right, i was wrong in my explanation. i try to stick to a 1-4% liability. depending on the risk i can stake a little more, but actually i shouldn't be doing that.

greed, i did not risk my whole bank at any point and i never said that in one of my posts.. if you talk about the braga game, i risked all my profits. after my loss of 250€ on my basketball bet i withdrew my initial 1K to prevent myself from doing stupid things, like i wrote in my post. i played on with the 218 profits i had left after the loss to reach 280 and then indeed i took a chance by risking it all on braga to win a larger amount back of my previous loss. something i shouldn't have done but chances of losing were very small as braga could score any minute and beira-mar hardly had any shots on target in the whole game.

at the moment i'm keeping money in my neteller account to limit the money i play with, but my bank is still the same.

seems like i doubled my bank after 12 days. i guess this means that a bad day to put my feet on the ground again can't be far away.
will try to use the same trading tactics on football in the coming days but take it a bit more easy. i start with 250 in my account to keep focussed and to limit my daily loss. let's see where it takes me tomorrow.

hi paulme, it took you a while to get here, i was offended

rough weekend.. lots of ups and downs, good trades, bad trades, overstaking, some drunk bets. too bad i lost too big yesterday evening on arsenal. i had to go out unexpectedly at half time and thought i'd lay swansea to win some on the draw and some more on arsenal after i backed arsenal prematch. didn't expect to see the 3-2 when i got home. 160€ in 3 days is not too bad. 420€ without arsenal would've been better though.

think i'll change tactics and just try to hit the daily targets from now on. current daily targets are around 45€ and will slowly increase (as the target period is still 6 months). average daily profit so far has been 90€. i withdrew all profits to leave 200€ in my account again. wish me luck.

Anyway, I got a few questions and remarks, if you don't mind:

You state your strategy is to stake just 1-4% of your bank. But then in your P&L-sheet you list liabilities far bigger then this. Also among this micro-wins there is quite a couple of relatively big wins, which would demand fairly high stakes. So, what exactly is your rule for staking.

Also, running down your daily P&Ls, your strategy seems simply to be, to win more than you lose, sometimes with small and sometimes with relatively high profits. But you seem to be quite good in chosing the games and betting. Is this all of your secret?

Finally just a point to ponder about: isn't your approach to have a steady goal pure nonsense in the end? The positive aspect certainly is, that it calms you down in your current situation as you are far beyond your initial goal. So you don't feel the urgency to bet, if you feel to have found a value-bet and you don't have to stake too high. But on the flip-side, doesn't that put you under unneccessary pressure to bet, even if you don't find value-bets? So my approach would simply be to bet whenever I see a good a opportunity and to leave it out, if the risk is too high, thus having a slow, but steady growth of the bank.

hi moghul, thanks for the questions and advice! the liabilities you see between 10 and 80€ were pretty much between 1-4%. every now and then you can indeed notice a loss of around 200€ which was simply overstaking. i tried to stick to the targets per market, but it's hard to do and i notice that i continuously want things to go faster. i've lost a lot in the last years and it's hard to cope with that at times. the relative big wins don't necessarily mean overstaking, but most of all taking more risk.

i agree with you that a steady goal implies a bit of pressure, but first of all.. if i don't reach the daily target, it's not a failure or anything, i don't "have" to make the daily target. but you might have noticed that the daily targets, compared to the bank, are very low so that should make it easier.

however, i took a big hit today. the day before yesterday i was 100€ up when i lost my profits so no wins and lost about 400€ yesterday, most of it on espanyol. i had a bad feeling the last couple of days. i'm not doing what i should be doing, i'm overstaking, taking unnecessary risks to go faster and to win more. greed is taking over and like i mentioned before i need to refocus but i don't get the feeling that i'm able to do that at the moment. i can also use my remaining profits well. that's why i decided to withdraw everything and start over again. sorry if this decision disappoints the readers, but if i don't do this i'm afraid i will slowly loose it all.

to succeed i will need a consistent way of making small money with minimum risk and at the moment i don't have the feeling that i have that. any thoughts are always welcome!

for what it's worth, this is how I see it but correct me if I am wrong.  You are getting too emotionally attached/bogged down/ upset by individual losses or losing days.  You need to see the long term picture.  Don't worry about losing days / markets etc they will happen guaranteed.  Keep your staking in check and that should enable you to stay in the game longer.

The only way to succeed in this game is to obtain value, but you will never be able to tell this over short periods, one or two markets etc.  You need to keep plugging away and over a larger sample you will be able to see if you are obtaining value or have an edge.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to make money even with minimal risk, if there was everybody would be doing it.  It needs a lot of hard work to have even any chance of success.  Get your staking in order, accept losing days/markets etc and stay in the game long term and see if you have any chance instead of blowing your bank over one loss and never knowing.  It will never happen overnight but good luck with whatever way you want to go.

Allright Nicholas, sad to hear you lost a big stake. But this is the nature of betting.

But I think you are doing the right thing, when you leave betting for a few days now. You seem to see this very emotionally, so its good to have to some distance for a couple of days, recover your mindset and refocus on your initial strategy. After losing a bet, there is always the danger to chase, decreased sensitivity and thus overstaking or taking too much risk. Finally you lose even more. So go out and play for a few days and then go on with your old strategy and more discipline.

hi larsson, thanks a lot for your comment. you are absolutely right. it's not necessarily because i had a losing day, but mainly because i didn't have my act together and from the past i know how that ends most of the time.. that's why i'm taking a couple of days off to think about what to do, how to proceed and with what bank..

In the 3rd race at Mornington tomorrow is a Moody horse who ran into a smart one on it's debut. Benleigh is a half brother to Danleigh and ran 2nd two weeks ago to a galloper going places in Blue Music. Today with Nolan in the saddle should see him beat this lot. All but Venomous Clive are exposed as average types and even though he is well bred and promising, he must give the selection 1.5 kg's. Not a huge price expected but he should be going on to much better thing's.

but you are right about trading and sooner or later taking a big hit when the odds go against you.....the spreadsheet wasnt really designed for that.....you can still trade but it would have to be within very strict parameters especailly as far as the football markets are concerned....

and there are a couple of things i can think of to help with discipline and patience...

although in the end most of it has to come from within!!!!!
