I would think Chrome was the fastest but Firefox, my all round favourite has caught up recently...

I downloaded chrome just a few minutes before this thread for the first time and it's running as smooth as anything but where is the tool bar?, like file, edit etc...? .

Firefox for me was agonising, downloaded it's newest version and then beta, both useless for me, kept getting an unresponsive script message?

Report Brave dancer • December 12, 2011 12:15 AM GMT
Dunno what your problems are with Firefox...  I use Linux and it runs really sweet (As do most things on Linux) I'm using Firefox 8 if that's any use...
Report Brave dancer • December 12, 2011 12:17 AM GMT
As for Chrome, is'nt there a spanner to click on?
Report Johnnybravo22 • December 12, 2011 12:19 AM GMT
Also use Google Chrome and never had any problems used to use internet explorer and it used to not respond a lot.
Report acquiesce12 • December 12, 2011 12:30 AM GMT
Yes there is a spanner, thanks, just getting use to it after firefoxGrin

I don't what was wrong with firefox but most people seem to like it - for me it was crippling, every minute a msg came up stating there was an unresponsive script, beats me.

So linux is an OS does that cost to download?
Report Brave dancer • December 12, 2011 12:40 AM GMT
Nope Linux is completely free (In more than one meaning of the word). You can burn it to a cd and try it without changing anything on your PC but it won't run fast until you install to your hd.

Thanks mate, might give it a go.

As a non techie, I wonder and ask why one browser is better ( or quicker) than another.
Is it possible to reply to this in any sort of comprehensible layman terms ?
Luckily I do not need speed, but is there any other aspect of chrome that might be beneficial to me.
I currently use explorer and experience no hitches at all.

Opera is the worst for me...............nearly unusable, markets won't open often when I click on them.

________

Some key features of Google Chrome

Speed
Chrome is designed to be fast in every possible way: It's quick to start up from your desktop, loads web pages in a snap, and runs complex web applications fast.

Simplicity
Chrome's browser window is streamlined, clean and simple.
Chrome also includes features that are designed for efficiency and ease of use. For example, we can search and navigate from the same box, and arrange tabs however we wish — quickly and easily.

Chrome - Security
Chrome is designed to keep you safer and more secure on the web with built-in malware and phishing protection, autoupdates to make sure the browser is up-to-date with the latest security updates.

I’ve just had a test drive and have also read up on some more of its features. Here are a list of eight things I like about it and why it could be better than the latest versions of both IE and Firefox:

1. More stability

Google implies that Chrome is more stable than existing browsers. A major selling point for me. As their little Google’s comic book puts it, “When you’re writing an important email or editing a document a browser crash is a big deal”.

2. More speed

Google claim that sites will download quicker on Chrome; this appears to have something to do with Chrome’s JavaScript Virtual Machine named V8. Google state that Chrome looks at the JavaScript source code and “generates machine code that can run directly on the CPU that’s running the browser”, this apparently helps speed things up.

Brendan Eich (the founder of Mozilla CTO and JavaScript creator) claims a new Firefox’s new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine outperforms V8 so this particular claim is hard to verify.

3. More secure

I like how they have built Chrome using a sandboxing technique that prevents unwanted software installing itself on your machine and stops what happens on one tab affecting what happens on another.

4. More open

Google have decided to open source the entire browser. This could be of huge benefit to the web community. Yes, I know Google has more money than God so they can afford to do this but they deserve a pat on the back for doing this.

5. More style

Google definitely lacks Apple’s style but what they’ve build here looks really slick. I’m a big fan of the smooth and uncluttered look and feel.

6. A dynamic start page

Chrome have done away with the traditional start page approach used by other browsers to display your 9 most visited pages when you boot it up.

7. More Privacy

Google have included an “Incognito window” in this build. None of your history is saved in the browser when you use this window and when you close it the cookies from that session are wiped out.

8. Better approach to blocking pop ups

Pop ups are confined to stay in the tab they came from unless you want to drag them out in to a new tab. I just tested this out on one of my favourite music sites and it works like a treat.

Also im using it right now! ;-D

1.Google chrome is really very fast .If you do not belive me then just download it and feel the difference.
2.One more impressive thing about chrome is that it makes use of Javascript engine.
3.Though you can open multiple tabs in Chrome too just like Mozilla but there is a difference .The google chrome makes use of Isolated Tab Process .The benefit of this system is that if one of the tabs crashes the remaining tabs remain safe. This is not the case with Mozilla.Isn't it great ?
4.Google chrome consumes very less CPU.You can check CPU usage for various browsers from your task manager and compare them too.Even when a users opens a new tab the cpu usage is less in comparison to other browsers when you perform the same operation there.
5.It is very easy to download chrome .Moreover it is available for free too.Any one can download it just click on the download link and you do not have to do anything else.
6.I was also influenced by the feature of display of list of recently visited pages which saves time . One may disable this function easily if you do not want to use it.
7.It has very less design features which makes it fast and safe.
8.Google chrome warns you if you are visiting one of the websites among the list of malware websites already stored in Chrome.
9. You can use a number of shortcuts in your desktop for applications you are using on chrome.
10.The simple look of the browser is also impressive.
11.It provides a fast start up and launch, fast loading of web content, html, css and javascript too.
12.The safe browsing feature of google also impressed me.
13.The auto update feature of chrome provides protection against latest security threats.

It should integrate very well with the Chrome operating system on the ChromeBook computers we'll start seeing mid June 2011.

I use chrome cos I like the simplicity of it but I often have to switch to explorer cos chrome just starts running slowly for no apparent reason
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR • December 12, 2011 7:52 PM GMT
Surely there must be some reason.
As I say I'm no techie, but earlier in the thread several very techie types have said that Chrome is by far the fastest thing around.
Anyone care to explain further ( in layman terms if possible please ).

Report FINE AS FROG HAIR • December 12, 2011 8:58 PM GMT
Too techie that route for me generally.
I'm a real illiterate in these matters. Trust me you would not believe the level of my overall ignorance.
Don't really know even why I'm asking these questions now.
I would be absolutely terrified to try to change any of the current settings on my computer.
It would end in absolute disaster, of that I am sure.
People talk about arranging tabs etc. I have no idea at all what they are talking about tbh.

Laugh some of the answers provided in my post at 4.45 yesterday were from google chrome themselves.

You might not be a techie, you're no exception, but I'm sure you have the intelligence to be able to read thru all that and understand it's benefits.

Cons
Uses too much CPU. Between 1.5 to 2X more wait befor e the page completes. Not recommended for slow PCs.
Report undern • December 14, 2011 10:47 AM GMT
which software are you talking about acquiesce12 with your last post ?

Google chrome AdBlock - that was a quote taken from the review site.
Report 1.01 Layer • December 14, 2011 2:40 PM GMT
For added speed and stability, I prefer to run 2 browsers with multiple tabs.  I use Chrome just for BF and the other purple place and then Firefox for oddschecker, bookies, stats, streaming vid etc.  That way, if things slow up on Firefox because of some dodgy stream or website, I can close it, run CCleaner and reopen it without losing a moment on either exchange.
Report flatliner • December 14, 2011 5:48 PM GMT
I saw that myself but I've had no probs with it.
