"Regarding horse racing we are looking at several track in particular which will improve latency and quality of pictures
However I do not have a time table on a start date but will forward any information I have when I receive it, hopefully in the near future"

just had a reply from sis about the upgrade

In reference to your earlier question I can advise that Arena tracks will be upgraded to Fibre Optic sometime next year and that we hope other SIS aligned tracks will commit to an upgrade project as well.

However, this is a long term project so will take time.

Should you wish to proceed, please complete and return the attached survey questionnaire and consent form.  I must point out that by doing this you consent to SIS undertaking a credit check on you.

I hope I have answered all your questions, but should you require any more information, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01908 865441 or via email at northernsis@sis.tv

What part of the SIS service would be impacted by an upgrade to fibre optic? Is it the link from the track to SIS offices or does it extend all the way to betting shops and other SIS subscribers? I would have thought that it would be the elimination of the uplink/downlink of the RAS encrypted raw feeds from the track to the SIS offices that would be replaced by fibre optic. The subsequent encryption in PowerVu which is uplinked to the 4.8East satellite and down to the SIS subscribers should remain in place otherwise there will be huge logistics involved?

Depending on how the upgrade to fibre optic is carried out there could still be appreciable latency due to the last hop by satellite to the subscribers?

turf tv tracks use fibre optic cables at there tracks and the delay from live is 1 sec.   therefore would think sis would be same delay once fibre optic cables installed ?
Report dogform • November 24, 2011 1:13 PM GMT
aspy65,

Yes, sounds about right, fast fibre optic link from track to SIS studios followed by the relatively slower stage of encryption into PowerVu and uplink/downlink to customer base. The current SIS latency of approx 2 seconds or thereabouts could be nearly halved by replacement of one of the satellite hops by fibre optic.
