Oh dear, please listen and listen carefully.
NEVER open any attachment or any email, you are not expecting.
Parking tickets are never sent via email and I'm assuming you don't live in New York, so why would you open it?

When it comes to emails, curiosity killed the cat.

I recommend you change all your internet banking, paypal, ebay, facebook and betfair passwords NOW!

But not using your laptop.

Download and scan your laptop using Malwarebytes free edition.
Download and scan your laptop using Superantispyware free edition.
Download and remove all cookies and obsolete registry entries using CCleaner free edition.

Reboot and you should have rid yourself of all threats.

If not, rinse and repeat ;)

Forgot to tell you to change all email passwords as well.

Also spam is not harmful, just annoying, viruses are destructive and spyware can result in theft of privacy and or money, or identity.
The overheating you describe is caused by the hard drive constantly spinning, the ram and processor also working overtime, which is a symptom they are trying to extract information from your laptop, it's probably malicious code, so if my instructions don't work, please backup any important data and format/reinstall your laptop.
You are taking a grave risk even connecting it to the internet.

You can't get a virus reading emails. If you read the attachment, im sorry, but its kind of a darwinean thing. A million years ago youve have been eaten by a sabre tooth tiger so think yourself lucky life has changed.

Theoretically you could if it was a poor or insecure client or perhaps html using using some html renderer exploit?
(I've seen a IE exploit download a virus before). I make sure email downloads sod all unless I REALLY want to see it and tell it to.

But yes, normally it's people opening attachments.
