Has anyone applied the new firefox update yet? (6.0.2) - Any problems?

I normally just apply them straight away but the last update caused some problems on Betfair pages so I just thought I would check.

i changed to chrome after the last problems and been using this ever since. very happy.

Gin what specific problems?  I will check them if I can before you update.

There were problems accessing the markets menu when FF 6 was released.

left hand markets menu appears to be ok

hope someone else can confirm this

BTW. If anyone is interested here are some FF add-ons I can recommend, which can help make sites faster. *** are essential for speed and security.

Addblock Plus - Blocks ads
Beef Taco - Stops tracking
BetterPrivacy - Stops tracking
FasterFoxLite *** - Speeds up website access
Flashblock - Stops flash from running at start. Can help with speed but if you want to watch flash content you have to click a Start button each time
Ghostery - Stops / shows which ad / trackers are on a website
HTTPS-Everywhere - Forces you to login to secure versions of popular sites
No-Script *** Stops javascript files from automatically running on new sites. Great way of protecting your PC from malware. You do have to manually allow sites but well worth it.
OptimizeGoogle - Prevents googling spying, removes ads, speeds up G.

You can add these add ons by clicking on Tools, Add-ons

Note that the more add-ons you add the more memory firefox uses, and thus the slower it can get when using bloated sites such as this and the RP. I recommend the *** above. And don't install fluffy bunny add-ons, which change visual appearance. Never download an add-on which is new, or has had less than a few thousand downloads.

How much do the add-ons slow your PC down pp? And is that multiplied by each instance of the browser that is open?

I currently have 3 instances of FF open (one of them with 4 tabs open) plus 1 instance of IE9 – all have Betfair / **** open. I have got 8gb RAM installed so the current usage is only 34%. If I were to put all these add-ons on, I am assuming my PC will still handle it okay?

I see you have 3 add-ons that stop tracking. I am assuming that they don’t completely stop it otherwise you would only need one?!

but these obviously only stop tracking from the specific ad-trackers that are listed.

It doesn't matter so much on the 8GB, it's how windows utilises it. Always best to keep memory footprint down.

Look at Processes in Task Manager. Watch Firefox at start of day (say, 260Mb used) and then see what it's like in a few hors (say 500Mb used). FF 5 used to be bad with memory leaking but it seems a lot better now.

I would not register on sites to opt out of ads. They are a bunch of lying thieving cheats, which are self regulated and don't even follow their own guidelines. This is why you have to have so many ad blockers and anti-tracking devices as they are always finding ways to screw the conusumerised punter.

I would also recommend the MVPS2000 hosts file.

I don't only do this to keep the ad and tracking scum out, but also to speed up sites significantly.

Its currently using between 430-460mb but PC has been on about 6 hours.

So, just to clarify, you don’t think it would cause much problem using these add-ons with multiple browser instances?

Also, just out of interest, if the tracking add-ons stop tracking, why do you need 3 different ones to do the job?

With 7 instances open after a few hours FF is still using less than 300Mb. This is on XP.

Why so many anti-trackers and ad blockers? Each does something different.

Beef Taco - Sets permanent opt-out cookies to prevent behavourial ad networks (100+) including google, yahoo, microsoft. Whilst those companies may or may not follow the guidelines other companies definitely do not follow the guidelines thus this is essential.

Note that the ad networks now use "super cookies" and other ways to track by not using cookies. I still use Beef Taco for the older companies that have not gone stealth yet.

Better Privacy - This helps block the super cookies and other stealth techniques such as flash cookies.

Ghostery - detects and blocks web beacons such as single pixels embedded into websites.

Hosts File - a permanent solution that totally blocks your pc from ever contacting ad networks. OK as long as the list is updated.

The hosts file is excellent. I stumbled across it a few months back. You would be amazed how many normal websites (Lloyds TSB/Betfair etc) have embedded links to adware garbage in their webpages.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1 :)

Although I did have to # some of the lines out which stopped me getting into certain sites.

Try another browser, I love opera for the following reasons

1.....a neat zoom slider tool at bottom of screen to alter size of text
2.....all spell checking is automatic so if using forum and posting just right click the mouse and alternative corrections are there to choose.
3.....very fast
4.....maximum viewable area maintained by browser with one button for all menu choices
5.....very stable.

Firefox is good but it cant compete for that professional feel that opera delivers, give it a try.

p.s. cant recommend any windows browsers at all but Microsoft office and visual basic rocks

I have been using the MVPS2000 hosts file as recommended above but it appears to stop me getting into the City Index financial spread betting site (it brings up the home page but nothing happens when I click on the "log in" button). I moved the hosts file and it let me log in again.

How can I stop it doing this? I opened the hosts file in Wordpad and searched through it for any reference of the website but couldn't find any.

Any help appreciated.

Talking of browsers, could anyone advise on the best browser for the standard betfair site and video. Always used to be IE, changed to Chrome recently but still often have problems with memory being sucked out of my computer.

Use Opera its miles ahead of all browsers and it works with betfair site fine.

Gin, you need to find the site which is blocked in the file (it will not be the City Index site but some other spyware type website they use).

In firefox, it shows on the status bar which site is being "bounced" to 127.0.0.1 for a few seconds before the web page fails.

Tried opera a couple of years back but was some problem with betfair.  Can't remember the problem now but it was something immediately apparent!  But perhaps it's now been fixed.  Will try it again now.

OK have installed.  The side bar listing all the markets is way *way* too wide.  As a consequence when I place a bet the place bet button is not fully visible.

No this is hopeless.  Most of the time the links taking you to different markets won't work.  I would not advise people to use Opera!  I'm uninstalling again.

Rather bizarrely, it has now decided to work okay so i'm not sure what that was all about. I'll see how it goes over the next couple of days.

OK cool. But its worth noting for future reference.

With most of the sites you may encounter problems accessing, its not the site itself which is blocked in the hosts file but a completely different domain that the site uses to count and track visitors with.

Looks for it in the status bar (you may have to turn on the status bar in newer versions of firefox) for something like "Conntecting to webstats.spyware.com - Connecting to 127.0.0.1" before the website fails.

And then just hash it out should you still want to go to that site.

For future reference can you just explain the "hashing it out" bit for me. Thanks.

In the hosts file, open with notepad and put a "#" infront of the lines with the websites you want to allow access to

Actually I had lots of problems with 6. Hanging or crashing a number of times a day, links just stopping working and having to restart it to get them working, found it by miles the most unstable version of Firefox I've used, not impressed.

Unbelievably, they are already pushing firefox 7.0 - 6.0 only came out last month! Given 6.0 for me was a disaster (I went back to an earlier version it was so bad) you might think they are pushing 'snazzy new version' over 'stability' :(

I am still having problems logging in to City Index. I can't see what FF is trying to load as it appears there is no longer a status bar - I tried IE instead but nothing shows in the status bar when you click the log in button.

I also tried to look on my laptop to see what is loading but it goes way too fast to read.

Any suggestions?

I've just had a look at that site and see your problem. Its littered with tracking cookies to record which site you've come from, where you're going even if you dont log in.

I've narrowed it down to this script http://www.cityindex.co.uk/js/tracking.js but dont know how to bypass it without renaming the hosts file each time you want to get in.

If you just want to get to the log in screen, the direct url is

but you may encouter further problems when you get inside

The direct url you posted appears to work fine. I logged in and (without going so far as to place a trade) it appears to work fine.
