Getting worse by the day from what I am seeing. More and more Managers with no interest at all in Sport and an even lesser idea of the rules that the Firms they work for have.
Shops giving away free drinks/food to lure in those who play on FOBTS yet even they don't do that - they simply appear to only attract those with no money anyway.
Out of date marketing at some shops.

One I saw the other:
A punter has 6 Football teams to win in 50p fivefolds. Total cost = £3.
4 teams won, 1 lost and 1 was a non runner/void (La Liga game).
Winning teams were 1/2, 1/3, evens, 6/5.
What is the return on this?

Ha, no - I was filling in at another shop for an hour.
The bloke (Punter) said £4 should be void as all bets including the void selection become void. I said to him "never heard so much bollocks in my life", I goes "you put £3 on and reckon £4 is void", he said "yes, I know what I am doing", he also said "if I put a treble on and 1 is a non runner I get a double" - I replied "exactly".
Manager paid him out - "to keep him sweet". Thankfully this muppett is leaving in a months time to **** off and make sandwiches.

They think a Pyramid Block is a branch of B&Q in Cairo....
i did 4 games for both teams to score on bald freds goals galore coupon - the cashier settled the bet as 4 draws and therefore a loser
I had to wait over half an hour for it to be corrected whilst in the meantime i was treated like a criminal

theres still some decent staff about in shops but truthfully probably harder to find than a winner.
i suppose it must be an industry problem and what with hardly any independents left the best staff are no doubt out of the game what with those hours and dealing with the filth that play the machines who can blame them.
what your left with are students who are not intrested and others that speak in broken english and are on some temporary visa.
down in north london i used to think billies had the worst staff buts thats probably that they have got more shops but laddies seem to have improved and the joes shops are not too bad but there the ones that have been taken over from independents and kept the staff but on there days off you can tell the difference.
paddy no power had some decent staff but they have all seemed to have left and been replaced by some of the worst i have ever seen and out of a dozen shops around north london there is probably only 3 that i would bother using

Bookmakers are playing a dangerous game at the moment in there many competing outlets
aka licensed high street bookmakers, they are diverting punters away from traditional sports betting
like horse racing to avoid payment to the levy via simulated racing and casino style gaming machines
which is unfair to the HB and GRA on the grounds that there shops originally and in a sustained manner depleted race courses attendances of punters to go in there shops and watch it live on tv through sis which is owned by bookmakers, which is why the levy was commissioned by the goverment after appeals from racing bodies for many years.
Why is this a dangerous game well heres why IMO as follows;
1.....The levy amounts are dropping now so the effect with the problems of the recession are affecting racing badly so there wil be pressure soon when there is lobbying about the amount of

I used to work for the Magic Circle in shops - I started in the late 70`s - and it wasnt bad. You had a full time cashier, and could study form in the morning. You`d build up a rapport with the customers talking about racing football or whatever. This was in the days of Extel and commentary only. Once pictures were allowed, the job became fantastic, you`d watch every race and be able to tell the punters how their horses ran the next day. Dog races were a marginal distraction. Shops closed at the latest at 6:30pm, and didnt open Sundays

In my local book (Sheffield), I am amazed at the distain shown by staff towards customers, particularly towards the FOBT addicts.
Remember if wasnt for the Fobs 1/2 the staff in the shops around the Country would have their P45s by now the Goverment should ban the Fckers

Lets be honest, if we banned the FoBTs, every one of their players would immediately and without delay begin spending all their money on Horseracing; thereby solving the prize money issue and bringing back a golden age of racing, right? They're evil, right? Because no-one ever got addicted to sports gambling!
If bookmakers had really highly trained staff, we'd never get in these arguements either, right? (Obviously they don't need to be so highly trained these days because of the EPOS systems, but if we did away with them too that'd FORCE the bookies to train!) I know we wouldn't mind going back to waiting 'til the manager could be bothered to settle out our win doubles - and sure - the bookies wouldn't be able to pay minimum wage anymore so we'd lose most of the bonuses and offers - but it's worth it!
It's obviously not the fault of a change in culture - it's true that people don't want to have to THINK about their betting these days, they just want to stake a bit and win or lose. But it's really the bookies' fault for changing with the times! They should have REFUSED to do so thereby FORCING punters to bet on the things I like rather than the things THEY like! I mean what is this, communist China?!?
In fact, while we're at it, why don't we force closure of SIS and Turf TV, go back to the ticker and commentary! Do away with mobile phones and the internet, bring back donkey jackets and Morris Minors! No more boy bands, bring back Slade and ABBA too!

cant see LBO still being around in large numbers in the future as technology surpasses them for all punters.
A lot of staff don't fulfill the expectations of their customers, and it's a sorry sight.
However, a lot of new staff receive crap (if any) training, and are promoted too quickly to managerial positions, wherein they pass on further crap (if any) training to their new workers. That, combined with too many area/district managers coming in from other areas of retail - rather than "from the shop floor" - can do nothing but see to a lack of understanding, direction, passion, and ultimately service for the customers.
The shame is, a lot of workers out there will want to be good at their jobs, but aren't given the focus and dedication they deserve.
My advice:
Once you find a shop in which at least two staffers know their onions (how equally divided works; that NRs in placepots go on lowest racecard number fav if joint/co favs; that the Scoop6 pools contribution is 7:4:3; what qualifies a race as a tricast race; the Dundee shuffle - that type), make an effort to be amiable and don't go anywhere else.
I blame spreadsheets. Too many 15-minute blocks of staffing have been finely cut over the years, with the opening hours ceaselessly extended, and the feeling of worthlessness and emptiness has snowballed far enough to leave about 80% current LBO workers the vacuous and pitiable messes we speak of here today.
The top and bottom of it though, as a punter on here once famously observed, is "Pay peanuts, get monkeys".

There are far too many District Managers coming in with no knowledge at all of Betting or even a passion for Sport.

With online gambling booming, exchanges offering better odds and terms and with the internet spreading into more homes and now pcs integrating with home televisions I cant see bookmakers being around in such great numbers in 10 years time, they have had there day and should release the tv rights of racing to more worthy agents asap.
