Yeah i try, i take it easy, couple of places, couple of small win bets then BANG full bank is up and running, then i panic try to find a lay to get it back. I should take up poetry or some less stressful hobby.Mischief

full bank bets is a route to disaster
Report greenup August 21, 2011 6:47 PM BST
Yeah but do you ever get that over-whelming urge to go for it?
Report aueng August 21, 2011 6:50 PM BST

Simple, go to your account settings and set a max exposure limit per day/week whatever. You can reduce it instantly, increasing it takes a week so you can't go on tilt.

That's a decent idea Azira, but I don't think you can set loss limits per day. You can do them per week, but then you'd have to set a pretty wide target or else a few bad (or unlucky) bets would leave you being frozen out for the next few days.

The only really practical way is to use the daily deposit limits. Open an account with an instant money firm (Moneybookers, for example). At the beginning of each day, move across the maximum daily deposit from Moneybookers to Betfair. At the end of the day, move eveything back to Moneybookers again. That way the most you can ever bet at once is the daily deposit maximum.    You can also move a certain portion of your money back to Moneybookers if you've had a good day. That way, you can lock in some profits and then play with the rest, knowing that if you lose your 'play money', you won't be able to blow the rest of the profits going on the chase.

Yep, been there.

Some fine moments:

Trading tennis:  Go in with a lay on the leader expecting the bounce.  Odds around 1.2....Move into 1.1' so go in again to average down...then....1.01 as opponent sprains ankle.

For me, when I bet, I am very specific on the amount.  When I trade, I risk more.  It is a matter of learning to "red out" then re-enter the market or accept the loss and move on.

easier typed than implemented.

you can move money between main wallet and Australian wallet so that you dont do full banks.
Report LordBobbbin August 23, 2011 2:33 PM BST
What's to stop you just moving the money back from the Australian wallet??  I'm assuming Greenup is saying that he feels a sudden compulsion or urge to go full bank. If that's the case, the extra few seconds needed to move cash from the Australian wallet to the main won't be enough to stop you.

Hmm, I thought you could set limits per day but just checked and you're right, per week is the shortest period.

I have mine set to 25% of my usual bankroll per week, which means I have to have at least four weeks of betting like a muppet before I'm skint. (This is week 4 Mischief )

Well it would have made sense for Betfair to have a limit per day. If they were really keen to help 'more losing players become winning players', the best thing would be to give users a good range of options when it came to setting the maximum number of bets they wanted to lose, or the maximum amount they wanted to risk on any one bet. A temporary quit button would be good too, so that you could choose to freeze yourself out of Betfair until the next day. And if you could opt to ring-fence part of your account balance so that you could only play with a certain amount for the rest of the day, that would be another nice feature.

Taken together, those tools would make it quite straightforward for sensible players to prevent themselves from going on the chase and throwing away large parts of their balance on a few ill-timed bets. Of course, Betfair know many of their losing players are losing players exactly because they do go on the chase on a regular basis. And those chase bets tend to deposit a good chunk of money in the Betfair coffers. Which is why they'll never implement any of these features. Help more losing players become winning players???  Yeah, right....
