Best to do your research if you are going to get involved.  Don't follow all the teams.  Select a few and decide when the bet is on.  Over 1200 games a season.

Like the pitcher is in baseball, the goalie is a starting point. 

Research is really, really key like any betting.  The more time you put in, the more you will get in return.

Really hard to bet on from the U.K as you'll be really behind on all the injury news, history between teams, motivations etc. With a regular schedule of 82 games per team the games are not as important as say a premiership game but taken more seriously than say an MLB game where they play 160+ games.

Other big factors include the scheduling, travel etc and obviously the goalie. You may get some stale lines in the U.K if the bookies are slow to change odds on a late goalie change but this very rarely happens as goalie rests are normally scheduled. Other injury factors you will be behind in finding out news.

All in all I'd say betting NHL in U.K is a bad idea unless you're really clued up and can get the stale lines.

I'd agree its difficult from the UK, have tried in the past myself and logged all my efforts to see where I could have done things better.
The only way I'd say is to be extremely selective during the course of the season though that can be difficult if you're really into the sport.

the only research i have been doing so far is alot of last seasons results in the NHL from january onwards in the Western and Eastern divisons, all i have really noticed which looks quite good is the laying the tie, on average 1in6 ends in a tie before the OT.

which if again selected well could return some decent profits over time, of course should one tie then you will get hit by a hefty liability,
but i shall look more into it, i was looking at laying the tie in Rudgby Union and League, but oh my the odds to lay is stupid, as in it never happens, any more informaton on ppls betting on Ice Hockey or other american sports would be welcome.

Laying the tie is not the way.  There are no "click and win" bets on betfair.

On info: last year, I built a rack of twitter feeds from journalists that travel with teams.  Amazing info from the afternoon skates, etc. 

As mentioned, the hockey news is a good starting point for research.  Injuries and lines are updated quite well.
