A woman loses her partner due to bereavement, teenage son goes off the rails and lands in spot of bother, family evicted from their home! Makes no sense at all to me and will only lead to far more crime in any case.

I am not English/British so although the riots didn't anger me as such, I was absolutely appalled at what I was seeing, it was disgusting, animals have more class.  As far as I am concerned the liberals and PC brigade are too blame, I lost my husband/wife/mother, it happens around the world but its no excuse to behave like a scumbag..... society and the law far too soft on them

I don't condone any rioting/arson/looting but you can't have politicians bleeding the country dry illegally claiming £1000's for second homes and not being tried in courts of law and people stealing bottles of water getting six months prison for a first offence. If people are to lose their homes and liberty there has to be consistency. People say the bankers have nothing to do with this but many people lost their homes in the recession yet failed banks were bailed out and continued, despite politicians promises, to pay out bonuses to loss making publicly owned banks, teenagers saw their parents lose jobs and homes and spiral into depression whilst the banks carried on on their merry way. Nothing excuses rioting and arson etc but there'll be far more if it's only the 'animals' of society who are clamped down upon!

Quite good question, there proposal is as out of touch with reality as reducing the number of police personal is when in the midst of a recession, not sure what social housing refers to but adopting a hard line on the lowest classes will create a similar problem as the united states where by crime seems like the only avenue to escape poverty, the u.s. has the most number of prisoners per head in the entire world and has little safety net for the poorest people living in the richest country!

Back in sixties....seventies.......youngsters had a chance to get on in life.......TODAY......thanks to the OLDER ones acting like scumbags that have caused the financial crisis.....and the greed of the "buy-to-let" system ( through greed individuals who probably have committed criminal acts to obtain mortgages that they would struggle to pay for etc etc.....and the lenders just took their business, turning blind eye to "SELF-CERT" mortgages etc.

YOUNGSTERS deserve more help to get them started in life........taking away the financial help makes matters worse.

The ones that need to be criticised are all the people in high positions........BANKS/POLITICIANS/MEDIA MAGNATES/ PROFESSIONALS WHO ALLOWED THEM TO LEND TO PEOPLE WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE MONEY LENT TO THEM ETC ETC ........

The problem I would try to solve is the exclusion.  People out of work should not be permitted to do nothing, there are plenty of things they could be doing for the community. For every park with dog turds in there is an able bodied person sat on his/her @rse watching the Jeremy Kyle show. It may cost the taxpayer more to administer in the short term but it would mean:

Everyone is part of the community
Doing nothing isn't an option so people won't get lazy
Taxpayers will feel less angry about providing the financial support if the streets/rivers/etc are cleaner.

Even sick and disabled people could be given something to do to suit there abilities.

Violent offenders should spend a month with the marines; vandals should have to help repair what they damaged; etc etc.

but catfloppo, they're not excluded because society excludes them. for the most part they're excluded because the culture they grow up in makes them unemployable.

that's why those areas are also full of asians and east europeans who do the actual jobs.

the culture of criminality on those estates needs to be broken.

I love the sound of the idea but it's clearly not practical.

Trimming their benefits a little may be more workable.

It amazes me how people imagine that all Asians and east Europeans are all working and non active in crime or that all english persons living on estates in poverty are bone idle and involved with crime.
the problems are universal over all races and most of the problems point back to the decisions of many governments elect aside of the genuine world and national problems to do with economics and for that matter global problems with cultures and there beliefs or goverments.

The vital thing in these places is to create communities, rather than having large numbers of individuals living by themselves. Let's take several closely-based blocks of housing and treat them as one big unit. Instead of assigning benefits to each individual, each 'unit' would get a pool of money, and each person in the unit would receive a percentage of that pool based on their needs.

The pool goes up to reward individuals for positive things (improvements in educational standard, getting a job, doing work for the community etc.). It goes down when bad things happen (most commonly when somebody's convicted of a crime, although you could also have penalties for single mothers trying to go it alone, in order to give them some incentive to stick with the fathers of their children). If somebody is consistently costing the others in the unit money, the unit members can vote on whether to have that person thrown out.

That way, it's in everybody's interests that each individual is law-abiding and tries to find work or help out in some way. If an individual is playing up, they can expect a knock on their door from other members of the unit, and they'll know a failure to listen could cause them to get kicked out.. Single mothers know they'll be taking money away from the people in their unit, and so may think twice about chucking out a wage-paying partner just because they've gone off them slightly and know they'll get just as much money for being a single mother. Plus, it might make a few of the girls think carefully about whether they want to allow themselves to get pregnant quite as freely as they do currently..

Where individuals are being a drain on resources, they'll personally know the people they're taking those resources away from - they're not just getting handouts from a group of faceless suits in some upmarket suburb miles away. That might focus a few minds, and get others to do what they can to help those around them to get jobs or improve their education.

In times of hardship taxing vices and luxuries isn't an unusual path to take. Let's face it the perception of gambling in society is predominantly negative. It would be like a stake into the heart of Betfair if it did happen though- commission, PC and tax on winnings!
