whats your favourite horse of all time and why

i seem to remember that name , yes some animals in sport have beaten humans in mass appeal, long may they be remembered!

I would say Mtoto.

Reasons, it was the 1st year i followed racing (1988) and though i never actually bet on the horse, he had this amazing style of running that made for incredibly dramatic races. He would not just be held up, he would be pretty much absolutely last, even with 2 and a bit furlongs to go, even if there were 10+ runners .

Watching his races in a bookies there would be an electric atmosphere , he would (by 1988 at least) , always be favourite, so all the back the fav in every race punters - the majority - would be on him, and as many had only backed him because they backed every fav, and didn't really know anything about the horse, when it got to 4f to go they started muttering that things were not looking too good, by 3f they were swearing, and by 2f , with Mtoto still out the back, they were absolutely seething and slamming the tables as their wages/giros were on the line and there was no way this horse could win from there, and indeed didn't even look like giving them a run for their money.

But then , just when they had given up, Mtoto would be pulled wide, and with tremendous acceleration, start to run down whatever was in front of him (Derby winners, anything), and if the last horse he passed wanted to make a fight of it ,Mtoto would put his head down and run to the line. I watched the 1988 Eclipse in an average sized WH Shop, which had about 60 people in, and the place went feckin mental in the final furlong  (a stark contrast to the 2009 Eclipse, the Sea The Stars one, when i popped into a cavernous Baldfred shop 5 mins before the off, and found only a Polish guy on a FOBT and a tramp that had fallen asleep).

I don't bother with jumps racing really , though i remember all Desert Orchid's races from his greatest season* .Never been a better jumper of fences as far as i know, spectacular the distance he cleared them by .Shame he never ran in The Grand National, would have been amazing to see him jump those fences. * The Panto Prince race is best.

I do remember Edredon Bleu as i had a fiver each way at 25/1 when he won the King George, which was my biggest ever return from a jumps race (£160) , compared to 4k on the flat.

although there have been many, many great horses over the decades and centuries all of them have one common feature that demands them all equal praise, they give there all and do everything there asked. I find ribots winning distances most impressive and more than sea the stars winning distances but again sea the stars never put a foot wrong and when the button was pressed he nailed every race.

Horses I remember from my younger days are Chaplins club, fish and chips, bold lad, dancing brave , commander in chief, desert orchid, one man, the list goes on and although not all were classic race winners they were crowd pleaser's all and never let the racing fans down for sheer excitement factor as well as earning us all a few quid in the process.

I think the awesome commentary must have helped, plus the fact I was taking the mickey out of my mate who had backed him.

It's only based on the one race but I think one race is all it needs when it's this special.

Dancing Brave,greatest horse in best race of all time.

All depends on the most impressionable years even though I can now watch all the races these horses dont seem as special yes we have stars like Frankel and Big Bucks but very few great races. The 80s and early 90s were my favourites I will just throw a  few in yet to be mentioned. Viking Flagship, Dublin Flyer, Remittance Man, Dayjur, Warning, Marling

yes some great horses mentioned there steamship, big bucks has been a horse that makes winning look easy, sea the stars was a big missed opportunity for me, in the bookies I was contemplating on 2000 guineas day doing a £20 double for that race and the derby as I thought it was on offer at both good prices 10/1 and 20/1 as it was I just put a tenner on the guineas as I got cold feet, gee kicked myself ever since!
